Huh. Didn't know that Sony Music is the main money maker. Also didn't know that Sony Pictures is so weak in comparison.

Interesting.

The fact the PS5 is selling the way it is after a price increase and barely any killer hits is amazing at this point.

I'll worry if GTAVI releases alongside most of their exclusives and the console doesn't move more units...and if Sony doesn't find a way to decrease the hardware price. At this point it's ridiculous that a console that came out in 2020 is more expensive in 2024.

I have yet to see this Takashi guy writing anything negative about any other console manufacturer...and all are decreasing sales and faster than the PS5.

At this point the ps5 is $150 more than the ps4 at its age( and I think we were getting $199 BF doorbusters as well). The system selling anywhere near Ps4 without a price drop, the perception real or otherwise of a lack of titles(compared to the past), and hell a price increase is a mini-miracle. I'm waiting to see what happens with the Pro because I haven't jumped onboard yet. This is the longest I've gone without having bought a PlayStation in any given generation.

They're gonna need to get back under $400, ideally $350, at some point to get the crowd who just buy the annual call of duty and madden. They aren't dropping $500 on a system.

I don't think the brand is losing its strength like some people are saying. The fact that it's even close to PS4 at all is good because PS5 was almost impossible to find for its first two years and there hasn't been any price cuts like there was for PS4. Having said that, sony will not want to fall further behind PS4 launch aligned. If they can stay 2m behind, they can close that gap after a price cut and releases like GTA VI.

I'm curious to see what the market is like in a decade when Gen Z are a larger percentage of the market than Gen X/Millienials. Anecdotally my son has no interest in console gaming even though he had a PS2 and Wii back in the day.

Sony: why our PS5 sales are dropping so fast guys?
People: we have no games to play on it, exclusively.

Its 2024, most households own a decent gaming PC, if you want ppl to keep buying a PS5 make great games for it already Jesus fuck. Bloodborne 2, BLoodborne remake, Wolverine, new TLOU, new uncharted, more unique IP's like Stellar Blade, etc. cmon gives us something ffs.

How does it being hard to get for a couple of years matter now? If people really wanted it they would have it by now. All you could argue is that some impulse buyers somehow would have bought it back then but have self control today.

There are more people on the planet and less competition from Xbox yet Sony is selling less. That is not an accomplishment.

It's not really that bad. Doom and gloom from this guy, but the system hasn't had any real price cuts. It's doing fine.

The PS4 had already had a price cut by this time and as I said in another thread, the economy is *not* really that good for many, many people as a lot of consumers are feeling the squeeze from all the inflationary pressures.

They're already begun to balk at fast food prices like McDonald's, causing declines in their sales overall.

So it stands that folks would also be hesitant for a $450-$500 system in an era where energy, fuel, food, insurance, etc prices are through the roof.

A price cut could help them, but it remains to be seen if they'll even do that once Pro is revealed.

It could be considered an accomplishment when the system is still $500/£480/€550/¥67k and the only true console only “exclusive” games are Niche Man 2, Returnal, Ratchet and Clank: RA, Destruction All Stars, Helldivers 2 and a PS3 Remake as first party and a couple of 2nd party games.

I wouldn’t bet on that. Most households own a cheapass laptop with an integrated GPU or a trash pre-built PC.

Sony really needs to drop the price of PS5 boxes. $€450-500 price point is going to exhaust most of potential customer base sooner than later.

It’s certainly going to be interesting to see what happens when PS5 Pro releases.

Sony Pictures has had to deal with the pandemic, the strikes, and the herculean effort of getting people back into theaters... Those things didn't impact Sony Music in the same way.

If the PS5 Pro didn't release this year and it was apples to apples, this year to last year, Sony is only 400K units behind their forecast for the year.

One way to look at it is that's a 14% deficit, but I think most would assume and rightfully so that the PS5 Pro will easily fill that hole. That's 133K PS5 Pros a month...

That being said, I expect sony is going to have a really weak summer and again that's probably why they had their discounting early, but they still haven't revised their forecast, so they think they're largely on track.

I still can't believe Sony expected to ell 25M consoles last fiscal year without a price cut. They are a bit out of touch with their predictions.

That said, by the time GTAVI releases the PS5 will be at over 80M sold. That's PS3 overall consoles sold.

We can't just analyse console generations as if they happen at the same time. The market has changed. The PS5 won't have its final years ending abruptly like the PS4 did because Covid won't happen again and because this gen will have most of its game releasing later than last gen, plus price cuts will happen later as well.

Impossible to gauge the tailwinds of the PS5 demand. They were literally selling out as fast as they could ship them, but no, I did not think they could reach that number and caught a lot of flake here for saying that.

The PS5 will probably become the best-selling PlayStation console since the PS2.

The PS5 has been seen massively discounted promo price points in the UK / Europe and US over the last year. When the slim was coming it was practically 100 off every where for months. It's a clear sign they need to do more. I expect there will be some heavy promotions in the second half of this year.

This is pulled directly from your ass. Most households don't even have a desktop PC never mind a gaming one.

Nearly 4 years later, I have heard multiple people IRL say that the reason they haven't bought a PS5 is because the majority of games that they want to play are still on PS4. So why should they spend 500 bucks on a console that is not all that much more powerful? TBH, I really don't have an argument for them.

Sure the PS5 is way more powerful, but if it's not going to blow people out of the water with new games and new experiences, they aren't going to upgrade. And then you have companies such as EA bringing current gen games to the former gens. Star Wars Jedi Survivor has been out for almost a year and a half, runs like dogshit on PS5/XSX and here they are porting it PS4 and X1, further strengthening the argument that the PS5/XSX aren't worth it.

I kind of guestimated that the PS5 was going to sell less than the PS4.
Not as many people having kids anymore + Cellphones taking over the world.

Most houses don't have a gaming pc let alone decent.

About Sony "giving something"...Stellar Blade, Rise of the Ronin, TLOU2 Remastered, Astrobot, Silent Hill 2, FFVII Rebirth, Helldivers 2, and there's a remake for Until Dawn still scheduled for this year. (also Concord lmao)

You got original IPs, sequels, remakes, remasters, singleplayer games, multiplayer games, etc...you literally have something for everyone. But yea Sony please give us something...stop giving all this content.

Honestly going back to a PS4 after using a PS5 is painful. Everything takes so much longer on a PS4.
