BO Wkd 06•16-18•17 - Queen is dethroned, all hail McQueen, ScarJo roughed up

Now that the Ascension had a match, I can finally take a look at the box office this weekend. Even considering that none of the four openers lit the world on fire, pretty much everything that didn't lose 70% of its theaters held incredibly well. Even that 56% drop for The Mummy and It Comes at Night is pretty good considering the WOM on them; I wonder if Father's Day inflated the entire weeked, as it has in the last decade or so become a bigger and bigger moviegoing event. Similar to how Inside Out opened to $90M in the wake of Jurassic World and nothing was particularly impacted.

Considering TF5 is the only wide release next week (and releases on Wednesday, no less), next week should have good holds as well, even with the inflated grosses this weekend.

I don't know about the west coast, but the Great Lakes States (and their Canadian neighbors) wanted an excuse to not be outside this past week.

The bloodbath is going to be when both Thor and Justice League are in theaters.

The fact that there are 2 weeks between and not 1 makes me feel like it won't be Armageddon in here, but there are factors that could make it brutal (mostly if Thor reviews really well and JL is panned)

Maybe.

I checked xaosslug's thread creation history (which is basically just the Box Office GAF history) and we have only had 2 weekly threads fail to hit at least 300 posts since December 9th.

We had 7 weeks under that mark in the same time frame the year prior. A year before that, it was 18 weeks under 300 posts.

So we are picking up steam. Yay for Hollywood stuffing the slate with franchise films I guess.

Boxoffice threads are just like Media Create threads. You have a small number of core regulars who are actually interested in the numbers, trends, and business of it, and then the rest of the popularity of a given thread is determined by how much fanboy fuel there is. Zzzzzzz.

The ideal outcome is both are reviewed extremely well and both are massive successes.
Of course, even if JL is panned critically, it will still make a ton of money. Thor will do well either way, but I feel for it to be absolutely huge it needs extremely good reviews.

Of course, if they actually put Beta Ray Bill in, reviews won't matter to me. I will just be jumping in my seat as I watch it.

I have a feeling Dunkirk will not be that falter

I think that the 5-min scene (or scene splice) that they were showing ahead of IMAX films this past month or so did a much better job at selling the film than the teaser or first trailer did.

I'm hoping that the talk of a 1h 40m film with little dialogue and a lot of suspenseful action is reflected of the actual movie.

Amazing numbers for Wonder Woman! Incredible.

I'm really happy about it. I wish worldwide numbers would be a little bit better,

Completely agree.

And is that run-time legit?

Damn, I still need to see this.

It's on Canadian Netflix. I am not sure about other regions. I'll have to find some way to watch What We Do in Shadows before Thor 3 as well.

I don't have much confidence in Justice League receiving a glowing critical reception, but I would be nice to see it land around where I thought BvS was heading before those reviews hit (60s on RT, 50-something on Metacritic). Snyder deserves a break.

I think that a few places reported that time previously, but who knows. It could be another Transformers 5 situation.

What We Do in the Shadows is on Amazon Prime in the US.

Or the blu ray is less than $11 right now, and worth every cent.

As for JL catching a break with reviews, I have this suspicion that if it tanks critically, Snyder will be thrown under the bus. And if it gets great reviews, Whedon will get most of the praise. Just this weird gut feeling.

If it's good, Joss Whedon will get all the credit.

If it's bad, Zack Snyder is holding that L.

That is how it will play out, for better or worse.

They better hope those reshoots effectively made JL into 'Wonder Woman and her Amazing Friends' or that fight will be short lived.
Hasn't stopped the Thor 2/BvS fights. xD

Even if JL is terrible, there will still be 20 LTTPs over the following 6 months about how underrated it is and the Injustice that Thor was better reviewed.

I've got no reading on Dunkirk. Hype / interest seems low to me and I haven't seen a ton of buzz regarding the trailers either.

That said the film will surely skew older so that affects things and it's the type of film that should have strong legs so even if the opening is tepid it could still be a good success long term.

Also it's a Nolan film which already adds a bit to the gross. He's one of the few directors out there with a legit built in audience

Yup, that's how I see it too. It's frustrating to see everyone shit on Snyder and dismiss all the good things he's brought to the DCEU. I personally loved MoS and liked BvS a lot. Even with the Wonder Woman hype going on, people shit on him. "Wonder Woman was awesome and saved the shit show that Snyder created" or "Give Patty the reigns because Snyder is garbage."

Snyder's movies look awesome and just visually are more interesting to watch than other comic book fare. He also tried to do something different with his first two films instead of just a paint-by-numbers CBM. He gave us a really cool looking (introspective) Superman who breaks the sound barrier when he flies. He gave us the best live action Batman suit and depiction of the character we've ever gotten. He was the guy that cast Gal Gadot as WW. He cast Miller and Mamoa. His Flash and Aquaman look badass. The Smallville fight, the Metropolis fight, the Batman warehouse fight, and yes, even the Doomsday fight were all epic.

I LOVE THIS MAN! I really hope Whedon doesn't have a chance to mess with JL too much.

As an aside, when I say "Snyder did this or gave us that I mean him and his creative team."

At the very least, Wonder Woman was trying to be consistent with Snyder's approach at shooting action shots. Which is good, because the action in Suicide Squad was terrible in comparison to the rest of the DCEU films.

I would probably prefer that they reign back the reliance of slow motion pauses, but Snyder always was good at showing the super part of superheroes. Patty's film definitely followed up on that.

My brand is, like Street Fighter 4...

Indestructible~

Your brand is tarnished. You couldn't save Tron.

Snyder does a good job at conveying speed and power on screen.

100% agreed with this post. I was really happy they didn't hold back and somewhat aped Snyder's style for the action scenes. As you mentioned if there's one thing Snyder IS successful at it's really showing off how larger than life these heroes are in the fight scenes.

I'm really rooting for JL being a good film. I'd love to see Snyder get a win with the terrible things he's going through in life and I still love his style despite its faults.

I think Sucker Punch is the only Snyder film where I've felt the slow-mo was incredibly indulgent and, consequently, very irritating. That does technically describe the entire movie, but I swear the film is actually only about 65 minutes long.

I both like and hate Sucker Punch. It is a gorgeous film that is just a mess narratively. Yet, somehow, I still enjoy the narrative and how it all plays out.
Maybe I need to watch it again, and maybe not be blinded by the attractive female cast in fetish outfits.

That is harsh. You didn't even give him Saints Row.

I wouldn't even give him Scarface: The World is Yours

As it contains many places I've actually been on my adventures as a globe-trotting international art thief, the open-world game I represent is Yakuza.

JL should win if its good.

The only remaining BO performance I'm interested in this year is The Last Jedi. Can it get to $700m domestic?

A Phantom Menace to Attack of the Clones drop for The Last Jedi is still $657M. $2M shy of Titanic + re-release domestically.

This will be the first film in history where Sub-$700M domestic is considered a disappointment.

The western sales of Yakuza are about right for a game representing you.
