Bomb of the Year

Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes - just can't play on gamecube controller, lame remake.
Killzone - Game just wasn't done. Too buggy.
Doom 3 - 30 seconds of gameplay stretched to 8 hours of hell.
Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour - Ruined one of my favorite N64 games

I don't see how Killzone can be considered a disappointment. To me, a disappointment is when the game, as the developers realized it, doesn't add up to your expectations. Killzone was hobbled by time. It was rushed out to meet a deadline. If Killzone had been given another month or two to spruce up the AI and framerate, it would be a serious contender for GOTY.

Try to step outside yourself, think of killzone as an xbox exclusive and then maybe you will get the disappointment.

You said ninja gaiden was one of the disappointments of the year,??!!??

my personal bomb for quality was full spectrum warrior, for sales it was otogi 2

Only listing ones I own or have owned in the case of CoN.

Halo 2
Could have lived with the shitty ending but the horrible XBL implementation ruined the game for me.

Ninja Gaiden
Generic character, enviroment designs, horrible camera implementation.

Maximo Vs. Army of Zin
Good Job Capcom, take out the one thing that made the original Maximo fun, the difficulty.

Champions of Norrath
Horrible Online implementation, and developer having no clue on the geography of the EQ world.

Silent Hill 3
Loved the game, but finished on normal in 5 hours 45 minutes. Will wait till bargin bin for any new installments.

Crap...do these games even count for this year?

They were so bad that they traumatized me and I'm trying to suppress the horrible memories for as long as possible.

Drakengard

Unlimited SaGa

WHY SQUENIX!? WHY!?

It's the long-awaited sequel to friggin' Outrun, and it couldn't even muster up five-digit sales in its first month. I'd call that a bomb, and I was rooting for the game to do well.

Btw, couldn't help but notice you are letting the Sega fan in you out a bit too much in this thread. Trying to spin OutRun2 as a qualified success in one breath, and then offering a case for Madden 2005 as a bomb instead?

You said sales expectations, correct? Tell me anyone who thought OutRun 2 was going to do ANYTHING sales wise. All people were yapping about two months ago was how Burnout 3 was going to clean it's clock at retail. And like I said earlier, where was OR2's media presence outside of previews? Where were the in-store displays? Where are the simple magazine ads? I'm not sure it even had one in the XBox mags.

As for Madden, if it's selling worse then it did in previous years (maybe it is, maybe it isn't, I don't keep up with this shit 24/7), then I'd call that a disappointment based on sales expectations (which is what you stated), and is therefore a "bomb" based on your definition. There's no spin there at all...it is what it is, and I'm simply stating the facts as I know them. If the facts are different, then correct 'em.

A couple more things...number one, don't play the "OMG YOU'RE A SEGA FAN!!" card with me, cause that shit won't fly. It wouldn't be too tough to make you out to be a Sega hatin' whore, but the truth is neither I or anyone else gives a shit. Number two, nowhere did I say OutRun 2 was any sort of success. Few things tick me off more then forum lackeys putting words in my mouth. Don't do it again.

By "bomb" you mean an actual BAD game -

Nah, people are just going by their own expectations, and how far short said games fell from them. More then a few people have said that while Fable wasn't close to it's pre-release hype, it was still an enjoyable game. As opposed to something like Driver 3, which simply sucked. :lol

Nightshade. Barely sold 5000 copies.

"Wow, is Fable really that bad?!!"

Not really. It's just on a console some folks don't like, and people had an expectation I suppose that the game was going to give them head or something as they played. Unrealistic expectations built up for a video game. Peter did hype features that didn't make the final cut, but it's a good game. Not a best RPG ever kind of game, but one of the better RPGs at least of this year. Kind of a weak year for RPGs though.

Most of what was in the game was good, but the overall world design sucked big time. Linear paths everywhere and huge loading times all over the place. Ug.

Oh yeah I almost forgot...

Final Fantasy X and Online for both PS2 and PC sucked major ass with all of those homo-erotic male characters that look like they slipped out of the asses of the cast member of Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, girly-boys indeed.

Its amazing how people keep buying into the Square hype when their best games were made back in the SNES days, at least then those characters did not look like fruit cakes.

Now that I'm back. ...

Metroid Prime 2 Echoes

SHOCK AND AWE
It remains unfinished. Thanks for coming Samus. See you next gen.

Geez, I must have bad taste, 'cause I think Ninja Gaiden and Xmen Legends are teh greatness.

Biggest dissapointment? Ghost Recon 2. Consolification horrendousness of a classic, awesome PC game.

These are bombs? And length/ generic character/"it's not like the first game" aren't really good reasons to not like a game, unless it's seriously lacking/rushed/underdeveloped

OP:"We all have our favorites for GOTY, but what game(s) completely disappointed you?"

Length most certainly is a reason to dislike a game, just because you don't think it is doesn't make it so.

Generic enemy and enviroment designs pull me out of games, thus lowering my enjoyment and sometimes completely ruining the experience of playing said game. Again, just because it doesn't fit your criteria, doesn't mean it's not a valid reason. I would imagine I have a slight bias against Tecmo in general though. They, imo, fucked up two franchises they tried to revive and messed up with Fatal Frame 2.

I'm assuming the "it's not like the first game" is regarding Maximo Vs AoZ. The whole point to the revival of the franchise was to bring back the old school feel of older platformers and the difficulty of them. Most of the praise, negativity was towards the difficulty of the original Maximo. The difficulty was the reason I, and I would imagine many others enjoyed it so much. The developer dumbed down the sequel because casual players bitching about the difficulty.

Wasn't Syphon Filter: Omega Strain released this year? If so, that qualifies as a huge bomb. How Sony took the best action game of the 32/64bit era and turned it into complete shit is a mystery I'll likely never solve.

An example of a bomb is OutRun2. It sold under 10,000 in its first month after getting quite a bit of hype, and the reviews were middling.

So why not pick out the numerous games that sold even worse then OutRun 2? You know, if cold hard sales numbers are all you're going for?

And an 80% score aggregate is middling? In which universe, aside from your own? For that matter, why did you point out the review scores anyway? Are they part of the bomb factor or not?

Of course nobody in this thread save for you seems to give a shit about sales in this thread anyway. Clearly the creator of this thread didn't...he made himself pretty clear in his first post, and the vast majority of the posters in this thread (for a change) actually read that first post and responded accordingly. If all we're gonna look at is which game sold the worst, it'd only take a quick check of the NDP sheet to figure that out...no opinion needed. If you want to get a real bomb of the year thread going, click "new topic".

Next time you wanna be a smart ass, try and remember the "smart" part.

It's the one that came to mind, because I was personally hoping it'd do better.

You mean the NPD sheet?

My vote goes towards Outrun2.

It saddens me to see it sell to the few,it deservs to find many many homes.

And playing it over Xbox Live is like walking through a ghost town. I've never seen more than 8-10 people on(all servers) at one time.

Say what you will about Sega after the death of the Dreamcast, but OutRun2 clearly defines the fact that they still know how to make classic games.

As far as disappointment goes...

Tales of Symphonia
Doom 3

Without a doubt, Sonic Heroes. Sega should've forced people to complete a survey before going anywhere near this drek:
Thinking of purchasing Sonic Heroes? Then please fill out this short questionnaire before you buy:

1. Do you enjoy games that take your control input to be mere suggesstions that must be ignored at all costs?

2. Are you a fan of repetitive level design?

3. Does the idea of falling through floors to your doom for no reason excite you?

4. Would you like to hear a robot scream "AFFIRMATIVE" at you each time you press a button?

5. Wanna have a 6th rate "rock" band yelling at you to believe in yourself upon completion of the game?

6. You're not sick of Tails yet, are you?

7. Does the thought of sawing your testicles off with a rusted machete appeal to you?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you're the type of gamer Sonic Team had in mind when they designed this game. Enjoy Sonic Heroes! And please accept a complementary copy of Gun Valkryie for your time!

doom 3
riddick (most overrated game ever, and i'm not kidding)
metal gear solid 2
metroid prime (right behind riddick)
devil may cry 2

Oh. Oh my. Tales of Symphonia? Phantom Brave? Sly Cooper 2?

Every time someone disparages these games, a ninja chops the head off a kitten, and doesn't even care. Please, have some taste. :P

For me? Probably Driv-three-er. All spoilers and 20' rims, no drivetrain or suspension.

sorry just to release some more frustration because of my stupid impulse buy -

Tales of Symphonia. Game sucks.

Never again....but maybe this stems from the fact I dont like RPGs to begin with in general.

I was sorely disappointed by Half Life 2. I can't bring myself to finish the game. The shooter aspect of it sucks and the friendly AI makes me want to hang myself.

Practically everything I played dissapointed me for a while; I'm a real victim of high hopes I guess.

Halo 2's single player was an absolute letdown. My friend left his fiance and drove two hours to come down and play coop with me. We started around 1am on launch day and I just had no fun. I think it was me being tired, I think it was the split screen disorientating me, I know it was the Arbitor, and that ending was the nail in the coffin. In fact, even though I try and play multiplayer every night, I have yet to go back and replay the single player campaign, I just didn't have fun.

Half-life 2 was a little more "traditional" that I had hoped. I just expected more than a good shooter; I'll take the blame for that one. I thought the early sections and the boat were great, but I hated the buggy. Often times I'd be playing for an hour and then realize that I wasn't having any fun with it, so I'd quit. Took me while to actually finish the campaign. Felt the begining and end sections were awesome, liked the ending, but felt most of the middle was "meh." It was one of those cases where I expected to be blown away, and just wasn't y'know?

Doom 3 pissed me off at first, but then I got a new video card and solved that.

Silent Hill 4 wins the prize though. I'm a big fan of the series and I found absolutly nothing to like in The Room. I worked through three areas and dropped

You might say that the only game this season that didn't incite some backlash for me was GTA:SA. I was having some good times before I got sidetracked.

Wow I am glad I am not going out with you.

wow, as someone who is replaying through mgs:tts right now, i'm surprised at the hate. it's a solid game and absolutley beautiful at times. to each his own though i suppose...

as far as letdowns go though, i'm hard-pressed. if anything, i've been pleasantly surpsrised by a lot of my holiday purchases. pikimin 2, paper mario 2, outrun 2, and halo 2 have all exceeded my expectations. i haven't picked up mgs3 yet (which could go either way after mgs2) though, so who knows...

i can say that mp2:e, while an excellent polished game, just seemed to come out too soon after the first. it's not that it is a bad game, i just think nintendo should have saved the sequel for revolution. part of the thing that makes nintendo games special is that we don't get an update every year or two. i think the extra time would have helped to make the game even more incredible as well.

also, come to think of it, i didn't care for the light/dark world swapping. it felt like a chore...

yea dude youre sort of depressing.
My friend and I played campaign and had all sorts of fun bonding over Halo 2. Its rediculously fun riding 2 scorpions or doing a scorpion/wraith combination in coop. Halo 2 would be my goty if that title didnt already belong to this little lady right here.

But I havent played Half Life 2 or Doom 3 so I wouldnt have an opinion about those 2.
