Well of anyone hasn't decided yet or is still on the fence... I have some impressions. I finally received mine yesterday and spent the better part of 8 hours ignoring my wife... Started a soldier for solo play. I havent played much multiplayer, but you get a very strong vibe thats its the games intention to have multiple people playing , and in certain areas its more apparent than others. Without the scorpio turret my death count would have escalated dramatically...
The Good:
The guns [obviously]. My god the loot piñata effect is glorious. Finding colored weapons is amazing. Technically all the weapons are different. But in a way they are all very similar. I have been through 15 different fire elemental SMGs, that all did roughly the same damage, had varying clip sizes [also fairly similar], and varying degrees of melee damage, which is nice because you can tailor which one you carry to your character [I opted for the %100 increase in melee damage, which luckily had a scope as well]. The trade off factor is really good [thank god for pause], do I want increased clip size lower damage? Higher damage, no scope? Higher melee, but two shot clip? Everything is a tradeoff. There is a lot of pausing, checking out the gun you just picked up, trying to figure out if you need the extra 3 damage, emptying out inventory of lower priced guns to accommodate. And its maddening to find a spectacular weapon to realize it fires two shots before needing a reload. The proficiencies is also another amazing feature, and another tactical decision making game pauser, do I use my Proficiency 4 SMG and wipe shit out, or do I try to use a proficiency 1 sniper to try and level it up?. All in all, this combination is very compelling, and may make or break certain fights, either way [in solo] you will be pausing and spending a lot of time in your inventory screen.
Grenades Its not a shooter without grenades. And they are fun. So far Ive found roughly 4 types, and unfortunately the vending machine has been offering the same one over and over. Currently equipped are the transfusion [which I have also looted the most of, actually seems to be all that drops anymore]. Great in a bind, and probably the only one you can throw at your feet and not get hurt from. But overall grenades are very situational, and another tactical decision to make before a fight.
Other Equipment Shield are done well. The variety is solid. And again this is another tactical decision. I opted for the health recovery, freeing up inventory space from carrying health. But this is another way to build a character towards your strengths and play type. Artifacts, basically add elemental damage to abilities, but are nice to find, and may just help you edge out a fight or two, I tend to lean towards fire cause its hilarious. Haven't found any class mods yet.
Its challenging if you're up for it you can take on enemies two levels above you if you dare, they obviously hit harder, and are more accurate, but definitely give you a greater sense of accomplishment [and they take longer to kill]. But in the same respects, if you keep everything at level it doesn't necessarily feel too easy. Anything below that you can basically just run in and stand in the center and destroy everyone before your shield depletes. Rinse, repeat.
Quests Are pretty funny if you pay attention to the text/speeches and don't just follow the markers. They do a really good job at leading you to places you might not otherwise have ventured, which ultimately leads to some pretty hairy situations [duel badass fire skags two levels above me, yes please?!], and of course piles of loot. They definitely fall in line with the RPG gather/kill/errand quests. But has a decent enough mix of boss/mini-boss fights and quests to unlock certain features to stay just beyond boring. The claptrap missions are clever, and I find myself scouring for those little blue bastards everywhere I go, and the bigger backpack comes in handy.
The audio/Vice acting pretty solid all around, sets the pacing for the fights, adds just enough comic relief without being annoying, and seems appropriate given the setting. [my favorite line: "Critical Bitch!"]. With that said, some of the characters seem to have only one dialog option past a certain point, at least TK says the same thing every time I go by his place, and apparently I smell like a skag.
The Shooting This is more both good and bad. The shooting feels a lot like call of duty [also the running, only with infinite stamina]. The guns shoot like I would think they should. Accuracy from range is appropriate per weapon type. Stability and kick feel solid. But Im definitely feeling like some shots just plain dont register. Im trained on a bandits forehead, torso, leg whatever, pull the trigger
nothing
but now theyre shooting back. This doesnt happen all the time, but its frequent enough to be an annoyance, and it doesnt happen at closer range. My thought is maybe there is some kind of math for bullet travel we just arent aware of. The little touches are nice, like the depth of field when using iron sights.
Skill points Its funny but for an RPG hybrid, I find myself fighting so intensely that I forget to spend my points. The skills arent bad, and the effects can definitely be felt during long fights. But a lot of the really intriguing skills are geared towards co-operative play [not all, but group play is where the benefit can be more greatly felt].
The Bad
The vehicles Really turned out to be a disappointment. They drive like a cross between a warthog and the ever-popular Mako from Mass Effect [in that you can bounce down a mountain and somehow land on your wheels, although I have managed to get it stuck in a couple places, and having to run all the way back to town. So far, I haven't really found a good reason to get in a vehicle besides getting from point a to point b faster. "Assaulting" a camp feels lack luster as the machine gun feels worthless and the rocket launcher isn't much better [8 shots to take out a level 15], running people over is fun the first couple of times till you realize you're only getting 1xp, so I find myself often jumping out just to gun some guys down the hopping back in. pretty sure they stripped the 10,000 vehicle parts in the game before launch, or if it is in there, you cant tell at all.
The AI I know this has been a big complaint. And although not as rampant as I thought, it can be a problem. Sitting just out of agro range and picking off badass skags, just shouldnt be possible. Ive had bandits blow themselves up with poorly place grenades. Somehow certain bandits can see me through rocks and arc axes [or whatever they throw] over them to hit me in the head. The skag fights become predictable, turning into a dance of jumping characters, skags and dead bodies
but on the other hand, some AI just seems godly at my level, snipers in particular. All in all, its a wild roller coaster from fast aggressive psychos, and midgets wielding shotguns, to impossible shield depleting sniper shots, to a camp of guys stuck on rocks and ramps. This is also greatly disappointing if it happens during a boss fight, which feels cheap, but I'll take the loot anyway i can get it.
Conclusion
Solo play is lonely. My recommendation, if youre going to play solo, rent it, when the DLC comes out, rent it again, or get it on the cheap. For multiplayer [even if you just have 1 friend to co-op with], buy it. Either way, if you enjoy loot, and all the character planning that comes with it, you wont be disappointed. Even as a stand alone shooter this would be a solid game, so the addition of RPG elements is just icing on the proverbial cake.
Edit: forgot the art style, its pretty amazing in motion.
