I'll keep posting in english on this topic, thank you.

Haha, oquei!

Ah, o Steve respondeu minha PM.

Maybe its a demographics type thing? Isn't the music associated with demographics many Brazilian Gaffers aren't a part of? Hip-Hop was widely considered garbage by most Americans and a love it or hate it thing until the past six years or so. Maybe this is something similar.

Personally, I think it's crap music. The rithm, the lyrics... there's nothing good there.

Them lazy people! /s

But so... which language will ye use to write here? :)

Indeed. I understand people who likes a genre - say, sertanejo universitário - only due to the rhythm (there's some great musicians there for the cash, after all). Everyone who is at least an amateur musician might feel the same.
But funk carioca is certainly one genre where that "explanation" won't work on me. I just don't get it. It's just noise.

And of course, I will refrain myself from commenting on the lyrics.

Yeah. I can understand people liking sertanejo, or MPB, or even axé, but funk is beyond my comprehension.
I feel that every funk is the same. Same noisy beat, same song progression, same awful kind of lyrics.

So I've been listening to some funk carioca (or similar music) and really enjoy the music. Any recommendations? Is this music still really popular in Brasil?

Are you talking about funk carioca here or funk in general?

Because Funk is fuckin awesome.

I don't even know why funk carioca has the word funk in it though. It doesn't sound like it at all.

The only type of funk I know is the one that the assholes put on their cars loud as hell so that everyone in a 2 km radius can hear their music, or the guy how used to play funk on the bus in their cellphones. The kind of funk that says "Empina empina empina empina empina empina empina empina empina".

So that kind of funk.

Hmm...good question. I don't know, but I'm relatively new here. Maybe there's a reason that I'm not aware. If nobody replies, I'll PM a mod to move it to the community forum.

Also, are you brazilian?

I wouldn't mind portuguese in the thread, I need to practice it.

There's some truth about what you are saying, funk was born in the favelas as far as I know, is very popular music specially for lower classes, some might not want to be associated with that.

But I do have to agree with the guys here though, it's absolutely terrible music, hip-hop at least has sometimes interesting lyrics, funk is the lowest common denominator in music, meant to be blatantly sexual and with little to no actual composition behind it. I can't think of an equivalent in english... imagine a song whose only lyrics are "rub your ass on the floor", and with just one single rhythm, repeated over and over again, that is funk, and I'm not exaggerating in any way.

Oh and yeah what people in the US know as "funk" has nothing to do with carioca funk, which is so popular people here don't think about the other funk when someone talks about it.

Nesse caso eu abro uma exceção ;)

That's basically it. The funk carioca that got popular years ago was nothing but dirty crap to play in night clubs so people can get in the mood to do some crazy shit. Same thing happens now sertanejo universitário, but with less depravity. It's always a song about a rich guy with an expensive car that gets all the women and blah blah blah.

Pt-br wikipedia says that the genre was "created" by DJs that brought and held black music (like soul and funk) parties, and the name "funk" just happened to stick to the new thing.

It's so dumb of an explanation that I believe this to be true.

It appears a mod has seen my question!

I'm also new here, and brazillian, yes. And I meant to ask what is the difference between standard Off-Topic and Off-Topic Community (as well as Gaming and Gaming Community). It seems the "community" forums operate with more permanent threads, but I couldn't find a proper explanation anywhere.

Yeah. I just don't want Brazilian do think that funk carioca is actually similar to funk. It would be a disservice to the genre.

I am doing a 6 month south america tour and will be hitting Brazil in Feb. Just got my visa approved yesterday. Kinda stressful without a return ticket but they said it would be approved based on my other credentials.

Any tips for Carnival season? Going to start planning and booking hotels now. Any must see places around Brazil?

We are doing a lot of hiking and camping. So anything of that nature would be fun. Any must see cities or sights as well. We are planning on doing 20-30 days in Brazil but also don't want to break the bank as I hear it can be expensive!

Hmm, it seems you're a nature's guy. Well, during carnival this country gets wild, crowded beaches, bad and noisy music...

I hate it.

If you want to avoid all that, you should stay away from the beaches. Maybe you should go to the countryside. I don't know much about the countryside because I live on a beach, but here in my state (Espírito Santo) I'd recomend the cities of Domingos Martins, specialy the district of Pedra Azul, where you'll find the Pedra Azul State Park. You'll find some great trails there. Another place i'd recomend is the Pico da Bandeira, with trails too.

Maybe someone else can recomend other destinies.

What about this underrated gem:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w9DASTz8EYw

I don't mind if someone is listening funk with headphones and not bothering anyone, but the moment they are playing this shit at 2 am in their cars near my house I will be mad very mad. Past Christmas we had a serious discussion with one of the neighbors near my house because they want to party all the dawn and thought it could be a smart idea to park their car in front of our house and turn the car sound loud, we asked them to move the car and lower the sound and we were called "barraqueiros". My father was so mad that you could see the will to crush the guys head in the sidewalk. Fuck the Z/L.

About places, I don't know a lot, but the serras in BH are pretty nice.

What about the historic cities in Minas Gerais like Ouro Preto and cities around?

Ouro Preto have their own Carnaval, so it gets a little crowded. But it's a beautiful city. if they manage to go before cranaval starts.

Also, to the guy who asked how I did at ENEM, 121/180 (Right answers/total questions) .

I'll look into them! Thanks! Going to take a lot of buses so I assume it wont be a problem. If its to crazy during Carnaval season then we will go a bit earlier and hit the beginning of it. We don't want to spend all our money at once!

Right now it looks like we will be coming in from Boliva so Mato Grasso would be the first stop.

Bonito is in Mato Grosso do Sul (state right next to Mato Grosso). Its one of the prettiest natural cities we have here. You should look into it. Never visited myself, but I know a lot of people who did and they loved it.

You obviously should not miss Cataratas do Iguaçu either, if you are into natural wonders/sights. But thats in the Paraná state, in the south of the country (kinda far if you are going in through Mato Grosso, but still worth it). Its jaw-dropping.

Community is not as visited as off topic, so the thread is probably going to slow down even further now. We will see though, by having fewer visitors here maybe there is a bigger chance of it staying on front page.

Edit: beaten.

The thread already has long periods of inactivity even when it was in the part of the forum that has a lot of users looking at it, Off-Topic. Off-Topic Community has significantly less people just randomly browsing it, so a slow thread will get even slower and it'll have less people just popping in to ask questions since the person won't go to OTC (Off Topic Community) to look for the thread.

Thanks for killing the thread Metra!

I'm just kidding.
