Hello Brazilgaf. I'm planning on moving to Brazil in the next year or so. Brasília, to be exact.

What's the best way for someone whose spoken nothing but English for the past 25 years to learn Portuguese? Or at the very least, start.

I think your best bet would be asking a non-native speaker, since most of us probably knew portuguese since before we can remember.

Maybe CorvoSol can help you better with that? Not sure if he still lurks here often, but you could try sending a PM to him.

First of all, my condolences, i don't think Brasília is a very good city. For portuguese there's duolingo, i've used for another languages and it can be good for a starting point.

Also, your best option is probably an actual language teacher in your city

Haha poor Brasilia. Of course, if your career has anything to do with government or law it is the place to be, but outside those the city doesn't offer much.

Duolingo is a good advice just to start, but you are going to require some actual classes down the line.

I am laughing so much at the reactions over the Brasilia post. lol

Poor guy will now be worried to move there. Dont dude. Its a nice city overall, its just... really boring I guess.

Brasilia is an ok place, by the posts above one would believe that it is one of the worst cities in the country :v

But, as LuuKyK said, it's "boring" . There's not a whole lot to do there but it's certainly not a bad place to live.

As for learning portuguese, I have no clue besides duolingo. Maybe you should look into a course in a place near to you?

I live in Brasilia and if you have any questions just ask me. The deal with Brasilia is that it has a “small town” feeling to it: It is a great place to retire or raise kids but I personally get absolutely bored in here.

Brasilia is boring, dry, hot and everything is expensive ..... Rio sux but at least it has some pretty parts and has lots of things to do =P

It's good if you work with software development too.

Work. And because Brazil is kind of an emerging country and I want a piece of that action and I'm looking into the oil field. Where I work I have A LOT of Brazillian clientele (Lol retail sales, but damn for the amount of work I do I average 50-60k here at MC) who work various jobs here in Houston.

Brasilia as I have a friend who works for the Instituto Brasileiro de Turismo who'd be willing to help me assimilate into the country for a while. Maybe not stay IN Brazilia, but it would be a good starting point.

And I love duolingo, it's a fantastic starting point. My main problem is that when I watch someone learn the language (Such as when I taught someone a lot of colloquialisms of American English) from someone who speaks it, they pick up on it a lot easier.

just a little fyi that you probably already know: there's no oil industry in brasilia.

Yeah ... for oil go to someplace like Rio de Janeiro.

Rmember that if you are going to move from Brasilia to Rio you will probably not be able to bring most of your eletronics since Rio is 220volts

And talking about Rio ... Anyone knows a good game shop with a cheap Mario kart 8 ? =P

Rio is 110v. And for game stores with good prices in Rio go in this site http://boadica.com.br/pesquisa/multi_playstation , there's a lot of games listings.

The cheapest I found was in Uruguaiana, but I got there through boa dica.

Still, the download promo worked much better for me, lets hope Nintendo does not do something stupid like IP blocking in the future D:

Just dive in. People will help you out. There is no tool in the world that will teach you the insane flexibility of the portuguese language.

By the way, can we keep speaking portuguese here or is there some rule that we have to speak english at all times?

Parabéns !!!!

Personally I like to speak here in English for basically two reasons :

1) people from other places that want to know more can understand

Começamos a usar português porque alguns estrangeiros queriam ajuda pra praticar a língua, daí aqui estamos nós.

Nos ToS tem isso:

Though NeoGAF is an international forum, discussion is to be held in English unless otherwise designated.

Although I obviously dont believe its the case in here, I understand that rule for some extreme cases. I cant imagine it being easy for the mods to control if people are saying something offensive or not in so many different languages. So yeah, I think its fine to speak in portugues sometimes, but certainly not all the time.

I still acho que the best thing a fazer é mix the two idiomas.

I only use english in this thread because one my portuguese still sucks, two this isn't a brazilian forum so I believe that people should write in English, and three I feel like if there's anybody who isn't brazilian who wants to come into the thread that everybody speaking in portuguese would put them off a bit from participating.

Hello Brazil GAF! I am coming to visit your wonderful country over Christmas and the New Year. Travelling with 2 friends and hope to spend 3 weeks seeing Rio, The Amazon and Iguassu - and potentially São Paolo.

I have so many questions and plenty of things to figure out but first id like to know.

1 - Is 3 weeks "enough" to see these places? We plan to spend 5 days in Rio, a week at the Amazon/Manaus, 3 at Iguassu and 2/3 days in São Paolo.
2 - Are we missing something? We are not too hung up over São Paolo. Should we be? Where else is worth going to?
3 - Do domestic flight prices stay steady? We are unsure whether to book now or much closer to the time when our itinerary might be clearer.

Never been to Manaus, so can't say if a week is enough. For the others, those days seem ok to me. São Paulo is nice, but I think the others are more worthwhile for a tourist.

The flight prices change a lot. Normally, the closer the date, higher the price.

Let's see those other candidates...

I think 3 days is enough for Iguaçu. I was there in June for 2 days and managed to visit the Falls and Itaipu Dam while shopping in Paraguay and Argentina. You're probably not going there to shop in Paraguay, so you'll have plenty of time to visit other places :p

Three days for Iguazu seems ok. A friend has to go there frequently and recommended me that three days were enough. That is if you can freely cross borders between the 3 countries, one day each is more than enough while you stay at Foz visiting the three neighboring towns doesn't take more than an hour. Again, Mercosur nationals can do this easily, I don't know the details for other nationalities.

I think Rio's time is a bit short and Manaus a bit long, but I do not know Manaus so maybe it has more things to do than what I imagine.

São Paulo however is too short I would think. The city is enormous and you wouldn't really get to know it well in just 2 days. It might be better to extend the time of the other locations thsn go all the way to Sao Paulo just to check it out a bit. Depends on what you guys like.

Flights are very expensive close to New Year, specially in Rio, so I think is better to plan in advance, depends on your budget of course.

I'll be honest, I was there for just a day and seemed boring as hell, but I also thought I simply didn't had enough time to see everything. It's one of the biggest cities in the world, is there seriously so little to see in it?
