Edit: Not unexpected to be honest. I hope the best to those good developers who want to make a great game, and those who screw everything up, hope never to get near a game ever again.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Wow, just...wow.

This is, hands down, probably the biggest M&A and game launch failure in the industry. You would think SIE's leadership would've avoided something with so many warning signs, yet here we are. It's one for the ages, that's for sure.

Did at least think they'd be spun into a support studio for the other teams. An entire shutdown? Not what I had in mind. Maybe SIE can claim them as a tax write-off of...what is it? $400 million now?

Jokes aside, I have much harsher and scathing opinions about how SIE have handled this entire game and the studio, and their retardedly pursued GAAS initiative altogether that IMHO has basically screwed their 1P of most of the remainder of this gen. But I can save that for another time.
Even in other entertainment sectors, this might be the biggest media bomb of all time.

For example, The Marvels is estimated to have lost Disney $237M, one of the biggest movie bombs of all time, and even that barely covers the cost of the studio here, let alone salaries for years, marketing and advertising, etc. for Concord.

Added to the list (growing in recent times) of Studios that don't survive beyond their first project...

The video game industry today does not give second chances. Sad.
But lucky for media and tech they sure know how to hook in big daddy corporation with deep pockets with nothing but some people with a juicy linked in profile.

Have fun trying to get $100M+ in funding including being bought out before your first product is even out yet in other industries.

"Expanding beyond PlayStation devices and crafting engaging online experiences alongside our single-player games are key focal areas for us as we evolve our revenue streams. We need to be strategic, though, in bringing our games to new platforms and recognize when our games fall short of meeting player expectations.

While mobile remains a priority growth area for the Studio Business, we are in the very early stage of our mobile efforts."

This guy is going to kill Playstation.
Eh... mobile efforts are obviously pushed by Sony Group, like way before Hermen Hulst became a top executive.
But it's not weird considering that their sister company has this:
Fate/Grand Order grossed over $646 million during 2015 to 2016. In 2017, the game grossed ¥89.6 billion ($816 million) in Japan between January and 3 October, and ¥13.2 billion ($120 million) in China. Worldwide, the game grossed $982 million in 2017, making it the year's sixth highest-grossing mobile game. In 2018, it grossed at least ¥134.8 billion ($1,228 million), including ¥120.4 billion in Japan (where it was the year's second highest-grossing mobile game) along with ¥14.4 billion overseas during the first half of the year. It was the year's top mobile game in terms of worldwide consumer spending. In China, its income accounted for the majority of its Chinese operator Bilibili's annual income in 2017.

In 2018, Fate/Grand Order drew widespread media attention due to reports of a 31-year old Japanese man identified only as Daigo, claiming to have spent $70,000 to purchase the game's currency, called Saint Quartz, which is used to summon Servants. Daigo kept on spending cash in-game in his desire to get high-level characters and ended up spending more to strengthen them once they were acquired. In an interview, the gamer said, "Some people spend $18 on a movie and feel moved. I've spent $70,000 on FGO. But it moves me." This incident highlighted the popularity of FGO. According to The Wall Street Journal, the game was partly responsible for Sony's soaring operating profit. As of March 2018, the app contributed an average of $2.5 million every day.

Fate/Grand Order grossed $982 million in 2017, making it the year's sixth highest-grossing mobile game. In 2018, Fate/Grand Order grossed $1.2 billion, making it the year's seventh highest-grossing free-to-play game. In 2019, the game grossed $1.2 billion. By 13 March 2019, the game had grossed more than $3 billion worldwide. Total revenue crossed $4 billion by the end of 2019. It was the world's top-grossing mobile game during the 2020 New Year period, ahead of fellow JRPG title Monster Strike. As of July 2021, the game grossed $5.4 billion worldwide, making it the seventh highest-grossing mobile game of all time. As of September 2023, total revenues reached $7 billion.

Nice, we can finally put to bed the idea that Concord was going to relaunch as FTP at some point. The Market has spoken, and the Market did not want this game.

Now everybody get that final Concord schad out of your system so we can move on and never speak of this game again.

Sony and mainstream multiplayer games just don't mix, Helldivers 2 was a fluke. The sooner they stop chasing trends(leave it to third party) and do what they do best the better.

As fun as the dunking is (please don't stop), I do feel for the people who are out of work and now have to figure out their next paycheck. That's an awful ordeal to go through.
If you take a shit you better bring some toiletpaper. There will come a time when you'll have to wipe.

No one shall be brought before our LORD David Bowie without the true and secret knowledge of the Photoshop. For in that time, so shall He appear.
Hope a lot of those devs land on their feet. That’s a bummer, but it definitely taught the industry a valuable (and expensive) lesson.

Not surprising at all. I just think the true failure was PS leadership not seeing how deeply unpopular the game was going to be. Not the studio itself who was told to make the game.

As usual, they are punishing the wrong people.
