Government overrunning people referendum regarding Europe happened at least twice in recent years in France and Greece, so yes.

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
I don't understand the economic perspective of Leave voters. Do they not believe that leaving has a detrimental impact on their country's economy? Do they not care, or think that that applies to them?

To many it ALREADY applies

That's the rub. As another GAFer put it.

See, there's a slight problem with telling people in perpetual economic insecurity that they'll face perpetual economic insecurity by voting for Brexit.

A few days of volatility? I think we have drastically different expectations about how markets react to massive, prolonged uncertainty. A leave vote will reverberate for years before we even begin to understand its effects.

Oh so lets predict doom from day -1 then?
Lets let all our decisions be based on their impact on markets that are ultimately controlled by a small proportion of the population. Lets worry about the "economy" as a singular number, instead of how that economy actually works, and who is exposed to what part of it, even though wealth inequality is at absurd, almost criminal levels.

Because that is fair democracy.

And how likely is it that Brexit will cause some of the more heavily euroskeptic governments to feel emboldened enough to try exiting as well?

I fully expect the racist parties here in Denmark to campaigning for something similar

Luckily our news media isn't as right wing as the UKs and the benefits and negatives of EU are much more visible to the public

So if I understand this right, the leave result could still be overturned by the government?

It's a referendum, so it's technically not "legally binding"

However, depending on the margin (seems to be relatively comfortable for Leave) and the overall turnout (which will probably be north of 70% of voters), the Leave faction will have a political mandate that simply could not be ignored without inducing total chaos.

Dodgy Dave's done for either way

I cant believe some of ya'll are arguing that voters cant be trusted with important decisions like this.

Seriously?

My side looks like losing but I appreciate the vote. We were treated like the adults we are who can decide on important issues. Thats the kind of democracy I WANT. I dont want my vote watered down by some repesentative system where polticians can be bribed to vote one way or another.

Watch what happens to the U.K. now. That'll be proof enough that voters can't be trusted with decision like this. They aren't informed and educated about the issues and vote from a position of ignorance. They don't care about people's lives outside of their own bubble. It's staggering how much this situation has in common with Trump's rise, only the U.S. is very very unlikely to elect him as opposed to the huge mistake the U.K. just made.

It makes sense (if you are an idiot who will burn your house down to "fix" something). They hate immigrants. Immigrants come to progressive countries for economic opportunity. If you burn your economy to the ground it makes your country a lot less enticing to immigrants. Thus problem solved!

Okay BritGAF, what happens from here? What have you done to the world exactly? Honest question I'm not too familiar with Brexit

Pretty worried I'm going to lose my job and my house over this. Does leaving not cause massive issues for companies and therefore employing people in this country?

As I stated earlier in this thread. Our massive UK client base is just gone. Many jobs are at stake, feels bad man.

An actual quote by someone back home who said about brexit. 'Fascinating, because for the first time in a long time, westerners are at each other's throats''

This still ain't 2008.

Certain things should take larger margins than 51-49.
Yeah that's what's nuts. Maybe a million, possibly less people are going to tank the UK economy.

I can't believe, the one time, the one fucking time I'm on Cameron's side is the time when his luck finally runs out and he actually fucking loses. Fuck this shit.

You misunderstand. I should make the decisions for all because I know better than all.

Not really but I not understand why people want to leave and when I ask I get no answer. Not a coherent answer and if I argue back with numbers I get the "feel" response.

why? you have pounds you want to spend on buying USD? wasn't it a bit risky to have that position over the vote?

donno about him, but I just got done living in the UK for a bit and am getting my security deposit back this week, and if it stays lower I definitely took a hit of a few hundred at least. not on the same level as him but its still interesting to see

why is this making the yen so crazy? usd/yen is collapsing :/
goodbye trip to japan...
thanks UK!

GBP was considered a reserve currency, but with this investors would want to change to a different reserve currency. For some reason, instead of investing in USD as usual, they all seem to have gone for the Yen.
