Brink |OT| _/^\_

What kind of gamemodes are there in Brink. I've only seen escort types (NPC and vehicle) thus far, but maybe I haven't been looking. Yes there are demolition and hack objectives, but those are usually to clear a path to another area.

Wow. this is up to 16 pages already? I thought the hype on Gaf for Brink was pretty low. Hoping to see some good reviews next week.

I actually thought the hype for this game was low across the net overall, but any place I've visited this week has a lot more people hyped and excited for the game, as well as saying they are buying it, rather then the opposite.

As long as reviews are 8's for the most part, and the online net code is solid, then this game should be a success.

As far as I can tell there are no game modes, there is only the mission structure. And if that mission structure is like the ET games (and I think it is), you'll have a unique sequence/combination of about 30 minutes' worth of escort, delivery, demolition, hack, and construction sub-missions. It's like an assault mode, basically. You don't really have gametypes like Halo or COD, you have these well-known mission scenarios that you play over and over.

Like one in W:ET involved taking over a courtyard, repairing a tank, escorting it while destroying anti-tank barriers, blowing open a bank door, taking the gold to a truck, and escorting the truck out. It was that same sequence every time. Now imagine 10 different scenarios like that, and you have Brink MP in a nutshell I believe. There is no CTF or DM as far as I can see.

Well yeah it was low across the net, but Gaf -> Net -> Gaf correct? That's pretty much what I meant.

I really hope this game IS a success because they've put a lot of thought, time, and effort into it, and it would suck to see such a unique take on the genre fail. I DO think that not having some kind of pre-order Beta was a mistake though. In this day and age, coming out of the gate with bad netcode will absolutely kill your game, and drive those unwilling to wait right back to Call of Duty.

K, gotcha. Sounds a lot like Unreal Assault, yeah.

Yeah, that's pretty brilliant. Even more awesome would be if the engi's objectives got updated to rescue a stuck teammate the way medics get updated for downed folks.
Seriously, Brink just keeps sounding more and more interesting.
Let alone the funky art style and free-running element, all these little details are gonna make this a team shooter that's a lot of fun, and above all fair.

Mines that give you a chance... no one-hit kills from snipers... all the class abilities seem like a big mix of Rock Paper Scissors... I hope it's as balanced and fun as it appears.

Is is squad based like BC? I saw somebody comparing Brink to BC hence the question.

No, all 8 players are together. The comparisons to BC have more to do with the way the classes interact. Medics buff/heal, soldiers buff/give ammo, engineers upgrade weapon damage, build shit and disarm bombs/landmines, etc.

Basically, the team that works together the best will win, just like in BC. Lone-wolfing sniper types will not have a successful place in Brink.

Watch the videos, there's a ton of info and if an objective, team-based shooter appeals to you, this one should be right at the top of your list.

Thanks, was kind of lazy going through all the thread.

I love me some team-based shooter. I'll probably get it for 360, altough I can't seem to understand how the 360 can pull off such textures and shit

Cool thread title, really helps it stand out.

I really wish they'd show some PC gameplay as I hate watching videos of first person shooters played with a control pad, everything is just so god damn slow and clunky looking to me. I played the hell out of RTCW and Wolf:ET for years, both of which were very smooth and fast paced shooters, but sadly I'm just not seeing that in the videos that have been shown so far.

With how many hours I put into Wolf:ET though, which was free, I feel like I owe it to Splash Damage to buy this game. There's a lot here that intrigues me, I like the setting, I like the class war, I like the customization, I like the mission structure of advancing through a map completing minor/major objectives as you go, and I like the addition of body types - though they still haven't shown any light body type gameplay as far as I know.

Brink.tv is pretty exciting, I used to love watching and commenting on live matches of Wolf: ET on ETTV back in the day, and it goes to show that Splash Damage really wants this game to be taken seriously on a deeper level. I just really hope they intend on releasing their SDK tools, as custom maps/mods is a huge part of building a long lasting community on the PC.

Same, but I am expecting 24-32.
It'll probably be easy to increase the allowed player count on PC but I also hope Splash damage has made some maps tailored to bigger teams.

According to the Brink.tv page they will be hosting a "Team v Team King of the hill match"? Sounds like they're referring to a game mode.

I don't hope it supports more if the maps stay the same size. More players not always means more fun.
Yeah, 20-24 players sounds perfect. But that's me thinking from a TF2 perspective. Perhaps because the classes aren't as clearly defined as in TF2, 8v8 is fine too.

But consoles usually means a lower player count than desired. Though QW was balanced for 24, with a larger scale, one more class and vehicles, I wouldn't be surprised if they set it lower.

Sure, if the maps suit more players, I am with you. If we have 24 players in a 16 player space - things go bad / unbalanced.

In this context, I believe it's more like a "Winner stays on" deal. Winning teams will continue to play until they're beaten at which point a new "king of the hill" is crowned and they continue to play, etc.

Ah good point, I thought that may have been a possibility after I posted that.

Doubtful. I don't really notice it anyway unless I really, really pay attention to it.

Agreed. BC2 has some of the worst animations in the last 5 years, but damned if that game wasn't great. You won't notice it when you're playing.

Yeah, I just booted up Quake Wars and it didn't really bother me while playing so it shouldn't be an issue for me. Man, I really hope this game turns out to be great.

They don't really have as tight or cohesive a visual logic/language for the Operative adopting a disguise in Brink as the Spy does in Team Fortress 2. In Brink it's just a model swap. It would be kind of cool if the Operative's disguise device actual scanned the dead player and the operative at the same time, so there's so effect of some sort between the Operative model swapping/disguising and the dead player model being removed.

Is there friendly fire in Brink? That could make spy checking interesting. Also do your teammates see you for who you are or do you appear as an enemy to them?

I'm really excited for this, I just hope the community can stay active on 360 and the net code isn't garbage. Reach's population is pretty low at night, so I have my doubts about this game being able to stay afloat, especially if it takes time to learn how to play it. :|

This reminds me of a map I made for Wolf:ET - Special Delivery

I designed it for competition play, mainly 6v6-8v8, as many of the stock maps were just too large and/or took too long to complete in order to make them viable for Stopwatch play. Two days after I released it one of my teammates pointed me to a 64-man server that was trying it out. We hopped on, spectated for a bit, and holy shit, cramming that many players into such a small map was fucking ridiculous. Every corner/choke point was just this constant stream of exploding bodies throwing themselves at each other, shit still cracks me up thinking about it.

I'm glad Brink's 8 maps will be balanced around smaller teams, as it'll really help enhance the whole tight knit, class based, work together vibe they're going for with the game.

Sweet deal, thanks!

So I can just activate the key on steam and avoid the D2D download manager from hell?

There won't be anything to dl from d2d at all. It's a Steamworks game. D2D is basically selling you a key.

My new goal - Sell my limited edition Shogun 2 for $38. :D

I'm so damn pumped for this game. If I can't sell Shogun 2, I'm going to have to sell The Show 11. I'm a sucker for interesting FPS games. :(

If only every PC game shipped with mod tools. Brink would be amazing with new maps to play all the time. I'm glad Rage is shipping with the editor at least.

I actually wish this was cross-platform play. Would be fun to keep the Brink Community together in games. Hopefully if the level editor does appear, those maps will appear on the Console versions.
