Brink |OT| _/^\_

Hopefully when I wake up tomorrow there will be a solution or at least a statement from SD about the issues. I really like the game, but I would definitely tell people to hold off until shit is fixed.

I don't have the game, I do not have a preorder - I'm also firmly addicted to Reach so I'm not hungering for a shooter as much as some people. But this is still disappointing.

I will be picking this up on Thursday (Australia :/ ), and hoping the patch fixes everything and the game becomes TF2 on console. However SD/Beth's handling of this game has been fucking atrocious. The complete lack of official up to date footage, while the game was pushed forward a week combined with a day one patch that is ambiguous at best - simple screams high level incompetence in a company that cannot be trusted. Who exactly is responsible is irrelevant (SD/Beth), there should have been much more communication regarding not only what the game involves (countless people bitching about the SP, in an MP game) - but what to expect at release. The day they announced the earlier release date there should have been accompanying PR that stated "The game is complete and releasing early, please be aware that there are some minor* issues that we are working on. Rest assured that the game will be patched and consequently amazing day one!

* Minor issues may in fact, be game breaking. "

As I said, I'll get this game - I'll return it under the 7 day policy provided there is no online pass, unless it turns out as awesome as I was led to believe.

These PC impressions are sounding bad... better hold off on opening that Amazon copy for a few days.
I love Quake Wars (Splashdamages previous game), and this game is a pile of shit. Return your game, honestly may be the worst release technically I have played in the last 5 years.

Game runs around 50fps for me in most cases on my i7+6970 overclocked. The GAF server I was just in was kinda laggy for me, though so it felt worse.

As for the gameplay, it's alright so far. I sometimes have a hard time figuring out where/what the objectives are, though.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, using the 11.5a drivers that are supposed to play nice with Brink.

I am really looking forward to PC version multi, please be good (in the next few days with patch...). Did anyone tried newest AMD catalyst 11.5 to see if problems solved?

A friend of mine plans on getting the game.
I told him it'd probably be better to wait for impressions (360 version) but he's pretty set.

Man this sucks.
Maybe the patch will be awesome and fix everything...

I updated to those drivers with my 4890. Subpar performance even at lower settings.

The game itself is fun as hell, but the performance issues/ glitches are dragging it down.

So for body type sizes are the big guys easier to hit? If so, why would you choose the big guy? More health? But if you're easier to hit and slower at moving I'd imagine it's far easier to take down a big guy right?

I imagine a medic could make you hard to kill.

Hey, I asked this in the steam thread but I'm getting pretty desperate over here :)

Is anyone able to gift Brink on steam to me? I can pay instantly through paypal, along with that I can also gift a copy of pretty much any valve game (barring Portal 2, Counter Strike and Day of Defeat).

Steam ID is davonaytor.

Weapons are the key difference, as well as speed and health.

Heavies can use heavy weapons as primaries and medium/light weapons as secondaries.
Mediums can use medium weapons as primaries and light weapons as secondaries.
Lights can use light weapons as primaries and pistols as secondaries.

So a heavy can use a minigun and a shotgun, while a light can only use an SMG and a pistol.

Okay, framerate is perfect *in multiplayer* which is interesting, because the first time I tried it definitely wasn't performing well (GTX570), I've since updated my drivers.

Single player framerate is deffo capped, though.

But yeah, in MP I'm getting the frame rate I should. However, I'm also getting sound drop glitches in MP. Awesome.

The sad thing is, the actual game is great. How do you make a multiplayer (pretty much only) game and have the actual multiplayer *not work*. I'm so confused as to how this really happens. I'm also looking at you, Demigod.

With all these PC impressions I have to say I'm happy I didn't pick this up, I'll wait for either a sale or some patches.

Now I'm more concerned about the game being actually fun and interesting.

This is good to know. If I have a lot of fun I can be patient for fixes.

Thats the major consensus on the GAF Steam group and alot of other forum posts according to the chatroom we just wrapped up.

Fun game, great art style, cool customization, dragged down by glitches and performance problems.

Maybe its just ATI then? 4870 1GB here, and with a DOOM 3 engine game, I should be able to max the settings and maintain at least 60 right?

What sucks? Why shouldn't he get the game? It is getting 7 and 8s? On top of that you have a page of people saying they are having fun, I had fun.

Re: No sound?
This seems to work for most.

Steps:

Go into your Steam/steamapps/common/brink/directx
Run DXSETUP.EXE
Let it finish

Trying now...

EDIT: Worked for me!!!
That's for "no sound" though, but hey it might help!

As for the framerate, have you guys tried FPS-related commands from et:qw? com_timingmethod and such? I wish I had the game so I could play around with the console some.

It's a fun multiplayer game, it's just kind of messy. I really wished they dropped the pretense of trying to make Brink story driven experience that could be played by yourself, cooperatively or as a multiplayer game and just made a multiplayer game with this interesting setting. I don't need these hamfisted cutscenes going on about the struggle to play a round of capture the flag.

"That's for "no sound" though, but hey it might help!"

I already installed the DX redistributable. The sound works, then drops after some time (waited like a match and a half. It dropped for a lot of people in the server too, at least 2 other guys asked if it happened to anyone else).

"Maybe its just ATI then? 4870 1GB here, and with a DOOM 3 engine game, I should be able to max the settings and maintain at least 60 right?"

Well yeah, there's definitely some ATI driver issues but the game SHOULD be running fantastic even on a 4870, because the MP games I just played had 0 drops from 60. And it was a real 60.

Even if there was an outright advantage from the UK outlets, it doesn't do anything to prove bias. I've never understood why it can't just be Brits know better how to appeal to British people.

So ruling out the sporting related games that obviously have geographic appeal and focusing on genre's that don't, how would an FPS appeal more to the UK then NA? Especially when the majority of AAA games nowadays are so conservative that they try to appeal to everyone. I'm not saying there is bias, but in the case of Brink, do you think there are elements in this game that appeal more to a UK audience and, if so, what would they be?

You'd probably need to look at the recommended system requirements. They really weren't kidding.

Ok this game is fun as hell, just beat around 4 missions and a few challenges and I am having a blast, do not see how this was rated below 7.

Jeez . . . I feel sorry for the PS3 people that wanted to get Brink to play multiplayer.
Actually . . . I feel sorry for Splash Damage & Bethesda . . . they are the ones that really got screwed.

I'm planning on getting the game as well but all we've got on the 360 version is a day 1 patch that is supposed to fix nearly all of the problems that are hounding it.

The prospects don't exactly inspire confidence so it's a tough decision.

Reviews aren't any help either. Yeah there are some high ones, there are also some low ones. It's a moot point though because I have zero trust for reviewers aside from myself and a handful of others.

The only issue I'm having in game is trying to connect to the GAF server. I time out every time I try to direct connect. It's impossible to find the server list as well I figure thats the only way to join.

Huh...never noticed that the recommended was a 5750. Thats just crazy for a game running on this engine...right?

Well I can't say with Brink, I don't know enough about it. But if you take something like LBP, there is an inherent British sensibility to aspects of the presentation. Even GTAs have a very British voice to their depiction of America.

Britain has an inordinate amount of top tier studios for it's population I think. That's not to say they all produce games that speak to British people directly, something like Batman AA while without question being top tier, doesn't have anything British about it to me, but I think in a lot of cases when people on GAF bag on the British press for over scoring a British game (most often with Edge) claiming bias is a really strange conclusion to me. It's as logically valid as saying the American press are biased against British games to me.

You're starting to sound like a reviewer!

Nice to see that people are having fun with it.

Oh! And could someone try if "ui_showgun 0" works?

Look in the OP, its at the bottom now.

I got a stupid question to the people that have played it. Do the objects stay the same for each map or do they have rotating objectives so you aren't playing the same 8 game types per fraction you choose? I was trying to find some info on that and couldn't so far.

just watched some streams on justin tv. saw a couple of guys play coop on one of the challenges that unlock guns and attachments. it was the escort one. looked like quite a bit of fun. then i checked out some of the other streams that were playing the 360 version in mp. looks fine. i love the art style and it looks like it is a lot of fun. definitely keeping my preorder. i do feel bad for the pc guys though. looks like it may be a case of shitty console port job.

So excited to play tomorrow with 360 Brink GAF.

Hopefully the same performance errors won't plague the 360 version. Hopefully that day one patch does something.

That's why I am asking why the reviewers kept saying that the lag or framerate is terrible on the 360 / console version.

And about the requirements, The game defaulted to medium shadows and high quality textures. I've got everything else beat on recommended aside from the video card (4870 instead of 5850).

Regardless, I ( or anyone else with a reasonably up to date gaming PC) shouldnt be getting sub 60 fps with this game.
