Not gonna lie.
Brit-Gaf is the classiest clique on GAF. From Threads, posts, to even avatars. Classy mofos.

I picked up my first car today... I've been driving different hire cars with work for about 5/6 months, but this is the first I can actually call my own. Its a Ford KA Edge, 1.25L, a diddy little thing compared to the new Fiesta and Focus.

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-...Etw/9DMYv97eyqU/s1152/IMG_20110816_173237.jpg

The salesman was telling me about the new Kia Rio thats coming out... apparently 90mpg or there abouts, it will be one of the most efficient cars on the market - probably band A (ie. road tax = £0). They do 7 years warranty too, I don't know what they're like reputationally.. it's a little bit bigger than a KA so I wouldn't have gotten one anyway for insurance reasons.

I want a car...

Haven't driven since I passed my practical test :(

I've had a provisional for 2 years and never even had a lesson. Beat that!

They're too expensive and I see no point learning to drive when I have no need or want for a car right now. It'd be cool, that's about it.

I'm in the same boat as you. Almost four years since I passed my test (first time, too) and I haven't been behind the wheel since.

Fords design department have got it going on at the moment. Loving this 'edge design' motif or whatever it is.

Congrats!

The last time I had a car was 12yrs ago. Since then I've been living in places where it's just not practical to have one. I live right in the middle of town (like, 2mins from the train station and high street) so all the restricted parking means I'd have to park too far away for it to be practical.

Can be a pain, but I've gotten used to it now.

Speaking of which... train prices going up by a ridiculous amount in Jan. Those dirty bastards!!!

OUTRAGEOUS!!!

Perhaps he set off on a Triumph Bonneville and it rusted away as he rode along?

I spent half my childhood helping my Dad repair his '65 BSA A10. Great looking bike but it went about 200 yards without a mechanical failure in it's whole life.

Besides, some of the best British cars ever made have been Fords! The Escort Mk2, The Capri, The GT40 etc...

UK Ford > US Ford (with the notable exception of the Mustang).

The same flatmate who has the motorbike also has a Triumph Spitfire in bright red, by the sounds of it you'd get along! He's recently had some trouble with it but it is nice, its tiny but long, real low to the ground and it rumbles like a muscle car -- I'd like to own a classic car some day. We were approached randomly by some eccentric old naval officer (he was still wearing his officers cap) in a Morrisons car park a few weeks ago because he'd seen the car and wanted to tell us about the life and times he'd spent working for British Leyland and the glory days of British manufacturing -- it wasn't you was it? :p

Funnily enough, the Americans don't get that model of KA, and I know a few Americans over in the OT who much prefer the European model Fords. Some bits of the KA and Fez are made in England and Wales too -- Bridgend, Dagenham, Dunton (Essex) -- so I don't feel too bad!

This was the situation for me too -- I'm 28 and I only bothered to learn to drive last year. I used to live in Liverpool and the trains were too good and regular to justify spending any money on a car... nowadays I'm living in Bath, which is far too hilly and badly serviced by public transport, and the MOD are moving my job to Bristol in December. I don't really want to move there.

Thnikkaman and killer_clank -- if it would be in any way tempting, there's some good deals on for people who've held a license for 2 or more years, like the £170 pcm Peugeot 207 - includes finance of the car, car insurance, road tax, servicing and warranty for 3 years etc. I wasn't eligable as I'm a relatively new driver.

I need to learn to drive.

I've got a provisional licence solely for ID, but I don't want to become like my parents and never learn.

I love cars so I really do need to learn when I get the money.

I got my provisional just before Christmas and have yet to have a lesson. Will be doing a crash course effort once I've finished studying to be a domestic sparky in my spare time. I finally learnt this year not to spread myself too thinly, at the ripe old age of 32.

Driving is essential guys. I learned after I finished university before I went to China. It took like six weeks. Just get it done.

I'd have to take a refresher course first, after four years I'm not sure it would be the safest thing for other people.

The last time I drove was about 3 or 4 months ago and even I feel like I could use a couple of lessons to get use to it again.

No need. Just drive around a private road somewhere. It's like riding a bike, it comes back to you very quickly.

I've never needed it yet having lived in London my whole life but will definitely need it once I'm trained as a sparky. Won't be able to carry my equipment on a bicycle.

I think the closest I came to learning was when I lived in Chingford for a while but then my gf at the time passed her test.

When I start to drive later this year the big thing will be the fear and the worry of pressing the pedal down too hard/stalling.

I thought the same way. You do get use to it the more you practise it. Nothing to worry about.

I know hot right?

So Brit-Gaf, enjoy the rain yesterday? It's beautifully sunny in central London right now.

On the subject of driving, I know a lot of people don't have to because they live in cities, but damn it's just so much fun! Why would you not want to? I literally go out for a drive just for the sake of it, especially when it's just rained and there's massive puddles, drive through them at speed and I feel like I'm in a boat.

I called the police when I guy did that to me once, and she said it was a valid complaint and against the law (dangerous driving) to not even try and avoid it.

To be fair the guy was in a van and seemed to actually swerve to hit it harder / spray me more (soaked up to my waist) and he saw me grab my phone cos he drove back round to apologise when he clocked I had seen his reg plate.

Made him squirm for a bit.

That picture of the wave dodger and car is pretty funny, look at the female passenger's face!

I've been through a pretty big puddle at 50mph+ and you really feel it acting on the wheels through the steering column, I imagine it would be very easy to lose control at high speed.. I slow down for every big puddle I see these days.

Where abouts are you working? Are you on one of the big commercial estates nearby or at one of the UWE building(s) or something?

God you must be rich. I'd love to drive around, especially in N Wales, it's so lovely on Anglesey, but for a 1 hour drive it costs about £10 or something, and my cars got decent mpg! (1.25l '01 Ford Fiesta, u jelly?)

Veidt said:

Yeah the Abbey Wood site is pretty huge. Nearly every cluster of buildings on the site has its own restaurant, it has its own shops, barber shop, gym and tennis courts for the military and civilian health-bods etc. I always want to take a picture of the big steel shiny "Ministry of Defence" letters on the wall by the entrance whenever I visit the site, but you're not really allowed to take photos and theres usually an armed guard standing nearby.

There are quite good cycle routes around Bristol, the Bristol-Bath route (old railway route) is great. Are you interested in going to the EuroGamer expo at all? I'll be heading over there on the Friday (hopefully with a mate or two) if you are..

Did I say I did it to soak people? I would never do that, I have had it done to me and agree it sucks. And when I say high speed, I was exaggerating, I meant I just accelerated a little to get the effect of a wave going over the front of the car. Wow, chill out Brit-Gaf, or people will start stereotyoing us as being up tight and no fun! Oh wait....

And I'm not rich, an hours poodle about at 30-40 mph getting approx 35 mpg would cost about £6 at the moment, small price to pay for an hour of fun.

I'm not too sure.
Though I will be in London sometime in September, can't remember the date off my head. But it's awfully close to- if not- during Eurogamer Expo. I will check when I have the chance.

And a friend of mine accidentally drove into the MOD once. They pointed guns at him. lol

I've delivered pizzas into an army base before. They're mad crazy about security, did a quick search of my car. Guess it would be a pretty good way of getting a bomb in tbf.
