BritGAF |OT6| Dark Souls? More like Arse Holes

Not just forgettable, it made it boring. Martin Scorsece doesn't know how to condense films properly, Gangs of New York suffered from it as well. Only his violent movies like The Departed and Goodfellas were put together without any filler.

The Wolf could have been a really great movie with good insight into the world of finance and high risk, but it didn't really get to the core of why people take such huge risks like market manipulation.

Save it for an LTTP, buddy.

nah, i haven't watched film4 for ages. did you like it. ?
i've got yojimbo and sanjuro on criterion dvd though.
i love those films.
Oh yeah. Shame that Sanjuro doesn't seem to be airing on Film4 any time soon, though.

I'm not sure it really needed to be. The film already shows that the guys are a bunch of idiots who are willing to risk their lives and those around them just for that extra dollar. Sure it's a simplified concept, but I feel that it's better to let people know just how bad some of these people in the game are.

It was Area 5 (with the amazing Adam Freeland music) where I became basically just a squishy mess of endorphins. I did just fail to get the good ending though. Just!

I'm really looking forward to Child of Eden. Thanks so much for sending it over, such a kind thing to do! My current "catching up" game is Mirror's Edge now that Bioshock is done. I didn't know much about it but judging by the reviews it was pretty divisive at the time. So far I like it. It's just like a racing game really. I can't wait to start on time trials.

Ah cool, it's that I'm referring to. Just about halfway through it breaks down to the organ bit. (It may actually be due to previous playthroughs while heavily under the influence of narcotics)

Also, I love Boss Attacks/Realise : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JP9m57Me0fY

Mirrors Edge is good, but has some flaws (it really didn't need a gun, IMO), but if it's not too expensive I'd suggest the DLC which is a purer racing experience.

War Peaceman

You're a big guy.
And Wolf of Wall Street is 90 minutes too long. Some good set pieces but aside from that pretty forgettable.

Exactly. I've said it before in the official thread for it, but it is one of the worst edited big films I can think of. There is no flow at all.
He transitions to 'evil' almost instantly, then there are long scenes of excess, followed by three scenes (ludes, boat, wife) that serve the same function of showing how far he's gone. Then in the space of a scene or two he's suddenly 'rehabilitated'.
It felt like they'd filmed a load of expensive scenes so had to use them.

That and American Hustle were all style no substance. This year has been so much better for films.

I'm not sure if anybody here is too old/young to appreciate these hows. I was reminiscing on the watching all the children morning shows I used to watch on CITV and CBBC. SMTV Live, CDUK, Ministry of Mayhem, Toonatik, Dick and Dom in Da Buglaow and Up in the Roof. there was another CBBC one too but i can't remember what it was called. I wish someone had a copy of all of the shows run. I would purchase it in a heartbeat.

Thanks for the tip. Just an amazing, amazing work of art.

I never saw American Hustle. Heist / crime movies don't usually appeal to me. But I agree with you about Wolf. Scorsese generally, to be honest. I admire his films but I don't find them half as interesting / incredible as most people do. Taxi Driver is probably my favourite of his.

know what's fun? researching about the occult; seances, mediums etc.

Agree. What are you researching and why?

Is American Hustle a heist movie? I watched a film called Rififi a few months back and I've been hooked on heist movies since then.

It has one of the most amazing half-hours of film I've ever seen.

I don't think Scorsese has made a great film since Casino and even that was a weak rehash of Goodfellas (Sharon Stone was fucking amazing in it). I think I love Raging Bull and Mean Streets the most, throw Taxi Driver in there too.

I thought Hugo was his best film in quite a while but that was mainly from a technical stand point, it got boring pretty fast.

Charlie Brooker's old Guardian article about Dick and Dom is required reading

Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, The Departed. Those are my picks for Scorsese.

I enjoyed Hugo, never seen Casino. All of the rest are good...

I'm probably a bit up-my-own-bum with Scorsese. I always feel like he's the go-to director for very USA-centric best of lists. It's like how the Oscars have one award for "foreign film" and the rest is all just very US-centric (but taken as being representative of the entire Western film industry).

The USA is an amazing country for sure, but it makes me a bit sad when foreign films are put in a ghetto with one tiny little shelf unit in HMV. Hollywood is just one way of looking at the world, not the only way! People are so used to the tricks and style of Hollywood films they freak out when seeing anything else. That's not what cinema is about!

Grumble grumble. Off to read an issue of Sight and Sound and sneer angrily at the Empire readers.

(I like Empire, just for the avoidance of doubt)

just for a story i am writing, so the research is pretty loose and light. it's set in a 1900s-esque era so there's a fascination with the supernatural.

Have you read Somerset Maugham's "The Magician"? Might be relevant. Early 20th century novel about a Crowley-like magus and his associated celebrity.

I spent most of yesterday afternoon and evening playing a Mario and Luigi JRPG on the 3DS.

I knew playing Persona 4 was a bad idea. Who knows where this downward spiral ends.

You know what I'd like to play?

A simcity / management type game where you govern Rapture. That'd be ace. You could stomp out human rights and revolutions and build up your mayoral house.

i have not! the occult isn't a massive focus of the story but that book does seem very interesting. i shall add it to my 'look here's a load of books you'll never read, scott' list.

Would be hard to fit into the universe's narrative, or have a win-state; what with rapture inevitably going down the proverbial toilet. But a more political, Game of Thrones-esque management game would be cool.

make sure you get a New 3DS for Xenoblade!
I fucking hate the fact that I'm seriously tempted to buy a New 3DS. I really miss the 3D effect (can't get on with it on my XL), and playing a gaming device with one analogue makes me feel like I've gone back to 1998. Since I'm trying my hardest to give the 3DS another shake, it's really tempting. Plus, I could give my immaculate XL to the kid in a year or two.

I probably have enough spare PS4 and XBone games laying around the place to trade in and get one for peanuts. Hmm.

Couldn't you just be a good Ryan and run a nice, efficient operation?

You'd have to ditch a lot of the specifics, but say you were basically a Ryan analogue and you could just make a Rapture how you wanted (still with lots of green and Art Deco). Maybe you start off with 100000 dollars and then you have to build work places, raise taxes, use sea slug research to make fancy things, deal with mobsters. Stuff like that. you could go all totalitarian if you wanted to or you could be all utopiaey ?

If you didn't keep people happy they overspliced and you have to deal with them. Maybe also people get cabin fever, research carries risk of creating more splicers etc etc.

Oh and on the 3ds I almost ordered one yesterday but then I remembered Lumines. And grim fandango and the other games coming. I just know if I get it I'll become even more bitter than normal at how cheery it all is.

Just cancelled my Pre Order 1886 and Bloodborne sucker edition.

Too many x360 games to play. And I want to try spec ops too.

How the hell is everyone? Soooo quiet today again. Trying to keep busy but very much depending on GAF for human interactions.

Oh really? Cool, but I'll wait and buy it legit, gotta support the little guy! :p Here, have some wonderfully odd Björk gifs in celebration:

I'll say what I said in the other thread, I don't dislike Volta and Biophilia but this is Bjork back at her best. I'll buy it too of course.

Before they axed it I was meant to be on Dick and Dom in Da Bungalow, we signed up for it at school and they sent us a signed postcard each saying we'll hear from them shortly, we never did.

If quiet means 10 posts, then we need a party in here.

You're blue!

I'm taking a small break from revising, last exam of January (Cryptography) is tomorrow so I'm cramming as much as I possibly can today. Jetting off to the Red Sea on Thursday which'll be nice.

Medulla is my favourite. Although Homogenic was great too. I liked Volta in bits but not all of it.

Bjork is a genius.

He's right to be blue! I just super crabby as I'm stuck at work with barely anyone around and nowt substantial to do. So I overcheck GAF until I reach NEUROTIC IMPLOSION and then I'll ask for a ban. The usual thing. Saw CyanideStrike was back too over in OT.

Red Sea, eh? That will be nice.
