Anyone else think its crazy Bungie convinced Naughty Dog to cancel factions. And now Bungie is about to drop Concord 2?

While I do believe that Bungie are a bunch of absolute retards, they were probably right about Factions being dogshit.

I don't know why you continue to quote me for this.

It's a vague statement, we don't know for sure, we never played the game. we know nothing about it. It might have sucked, or it might not have, and it's not the point anyway.

I don't care if the game sucked or not. My point is that based off of this statement, you can't assume the message was the game sucked.

It's a level of extrapolation that is unhinged.

Wouldn't be surprised one but if bungie egged on ND and Sony to cancel Factions 2, just to save their own skins with mediocre Marathon in the works.

It's like marketing managers at work all fighting for the same pot of marketing and advertising dollars the VP of Marketing doles out.

The marketing managers will always try to save their own brands first at the expense of the other brand managers.

Lately I haven't been to big on Last of Us overall as I am getting tired of it. But I have always thought that out of any live service multiplayer that Factions would have actually succeeded. But noooo lets listen to the washed up clowns at Bungie riding on the cocktails of success provided by old employees that are all long gone :messenger_peace:

Freak Marathon. Respectfully...
It's well known they dropped the game because ND didn't have a clear idea of the long-term demands of what they were getting themselves into, not because the game wouldn't have worked. It was simply a high risk endeavor that would compromise the studio for years after release and it would cripple their production pipeline.

Naughty Dog said himself the reason they droped the MP game was because they didnt wanted to be tied to it for years supporting updates and all that stuff that comes with modern GAAS. It has nothing to do with Bungie. They said they rather put those resorces in creating single player games. I still think they should have released the MP game as an expansion for TLOU2 and be done with it. No further support GAAS, just an old school multiplayer with a bunch of maps, characters and let ppl just have fun with that untill they got bored.

Bungie convinced ND not to become another Bungie which will soon drop Marathon and remain ND which will be able to work on something aside from Factions over the next decade - i.e. Intergalactic.

In other words this was less about the games and more about what the studio wants to do going forward. And it wasn't necessarily a "convincing" as much as ND looking at how Bungie functions these days and deciding that they don't want to become that.

Already invested the $$$ and they need some return from that shite developer
Well they are now so desperate that they will release a Star wars themed Destiny 2 expack in Dec, Destiny goes fortnite, all inte the chase of money and to save what is there to save.

They literally stated why they made the decision and Yoshida reiterated it.

How dense can you be?
It's you that's dense, use your brain.

Instead of canceling the game and throwing all that development cost down the drain.

Hire a new dev team to maintain the game so their current dev team can work on single-player games.

That is the solution I'm implying instead of canceling.

Do you reckon 10 people are enough?

I think you should give Sony a call and tell them.

Factions being canceled period is still heartbreaking. We could have had some god tier third person stealth multiplayer content.

Typically, multiplayer trash being cancelled is cause for celebration. Factions is one of the few exceptions.

You mean the same Sony that spent $3.6 billion on Bungie?

$3.6 billion would have given us 12 AAA single-player games.

Even more reason to call Sony. You have splendid ideas that will surely make them market-leader.

Anyone else think its crazy Bungie convinced Naughty Dog to cancel factions.

They didn't, ND decided to cancel it because noticed that a proper post launch support would require from them more resources than the ones they had originally scheduled for it, to a point that wouldn't be compatible with also developing at the same time multiple SP games.

So, they had to choose between cancelling a SP game or cancelling the MP game, and decided to cancel the GaaS title and focus only in SP games moving forward.

And now Bungie is about to drop Concord 2?

It may be your wet dream, but they won't.

I hope Marathon flops badly and I'm glad that all the other GAAS besides Helldivers 2 flopped.
MLB, Gran Turismo 7 and Destiny 2 also are very successful GaaS. The next one pretty likely will be Marathon.

They just released an alpha for a game coming out in 4 months and hardly anyone cared to play it. The company that made Halo and Destiny games and is supposed to be master GAAS expert and the game was tracking at 300 CCU on Steam in the final week of the test. It peaked right away at 7,000-ish CCU and then cratered to less than 2,000 in a few days. Then 300.
Bullshit, they have almost half a million players who joined their Discord pretty likely just to try to join this closed alpha limited to NA.

Bungie did open it only for a few thousand players. If Bungie didn't allow more players to play is because they didn't need it or wanted it for the tests they had to do in this closed alpha.

They said that later in the road there will be an open beta not limited to NA.

So you think marathon is going to be a success?
Steve Brule What GIF

Neil Druckmann is a terrible writer who cannot hear or comprehend criticism. The moment Intergalactic: Heretic Prophet flops, any support Sony still has for him will be dropped, and he'll be fired. Unbelievable they didn't fire his ass during the Uncharted 4 development fiasco.
You have been smelling your own farts too much and think they smell good. You write this like you have been talking to him on a regular basis and he's in denial.

I don't think Bungie convinced them to cancel it, they more made them realize the dedication a GaaS requires. It would not let them do much else for years. At least I remember reading such a comment from ND.

I think Factions 2 started as a more classic multiplayer game that evolved to something much bigger.
Of course, even if that is the case then it's their fault and they should have known better.

And yes i also believe Marathon will not be very successful. I don't think it will die like Concord though.

No crazy but stupid, Sony is still suffering from it's GAAS. adventure...after Marathon it will be over and Bungie will be reduced Even more.

Don't think Marathon will fail like Concord , it will have a user base but not the same as Destiny so Bungie will be smaller or disapoear

Sony Will keep losing money for some time and they only good good game that this edventure Will left is Helldivers.
Marathon is dead in the water. Not only did it manage to lose 90% of the players in less than two weeks during the alpha which is crazy. Now all the people they paid to promote the game, played another game in the same genre that's about to come out and they're all saying it's the best extraction shooter.

No. Bungie understood it takes all your resources to maintain live service games. Bungie is willing to do that, Naughty Dog was not.

I don't see any reason to cancel Factions. But i also don't see Bungie in a position to stop a game from one of Sony's top studios. We just don't know why they stopped it.

I mean this is the publisher that can't get its game to play on its current game. Conspire? No. INCOMPETENT? Yes.

Yes. It's what its available data and Bungie's (or Sony's looking at the bigger picture) perfomance in their other products leads to think.
Sony's "big picture" led to them releasing Concord and having Bluepoint spend five years working on a God of War live service game.

They don't know what they are doing.

By 'Sony's bigger picture' I meant the complete list of SIE first and second party gamedev studios, which normally are very successful and their recent titles broke their sales record in 3 of the 4 most recent years.

Thanks to mostly GaaS and PC, Sony's first party games now should make around twice the revenue they made five years ago. So yes, they know what they are doing.

And no, Bluepoint wasn't working for five years in any live service game. According to Sony and them hey are support team, that according to their game credits their entire studio did work in GoWR since completing their job in Demon's Soul in 2020 until the GoWR late 2022. During 2023/24/25 they must have been supporting other game(s) leaded by other studio.

Bluepoint couldn't lead any AAA game and even less any GaaS because first Sony said they are a support team, and second they don't have anybody in most key job positions needed to lead a AAA game and particularly they don't have anybody in any of the GaaS specific roles. If Bluepoint was working in any GaaS, it was in a support role, just as they did in GoWR.

OP, leave off the fanfiction.

ND cancelled Factions because they would have had to turn their studio into Bungie to be able to do it. They're a primarily SP developer and that's what they wanted to focus on.

I don't think it's some weird conspiracy lol. But I've always hated that it seems like a discussion with Bungie is what got it canned. Fractions 1 is better than anything Bungie has done the last 15+ years.

The head of Naughty Dog probably didn't even know Factions was in production. When he dropped by the office to get his favorite ketamine plate someone told him, he canceled it and created the elevator pitch for INTERGALACTIC off the top of his head right there on the spot. Which really explains everything about INTERGALACTIC when you look at it like that. "Blasian chick, high top Adidas, lightsabers, giant robots, Porsche spaceships. Oh and she's bald. See you guys in a few months! Going back to the HBO set" he said while snapping his fingers like a metronome.

One of the streamers from the Marathon reveal stated that he has been involved in playtesting for Marathon for the past 6 years, so that was way before Sony acquired Bungie.

If people have been play testing that slop for 6 years that means it's been in development for 7-8 years which I refuse to believe because it means its going to be a costlier bomb than concord.

Naughty Dog said himself the reason they droped the MP game was because they didnt wanted to be tied to it for years supporting updates and all that stuff that comes with modern GAAS. .
Great that it took them only 4 years to realize that.

Like I said, Bungie played a big role in it being canceled.

This Is Why The Last of Us Factions Was Cancelled
Naughty Dog realized they weren't suited for creating a live-service game. They initially led the project but worked with Bungie, the team behind Destiny, to help them out. Bungie's involvement showed how tough it is to keep players engaged in these games over a long period.

Bungie informed Naughty Dog that what the team had was not enough for a few weeks of gameplay on live service. A high-quality live service game would take away a lot of staff. That meant fewer members to develop other games. Yoshida said, "Naughty Dog realized, 'Oops, we can't do that! If we do it, we can't make Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet.' So that was a lack of foresight."
Why you didn't bolded this part, which actually explains reasons, and not some bullshit "they were jealous blablabla Marathon"?

What's difficult about hiring a small team to make content for Factions 2 every 3 months or so?
There's literally no excuse for canceling it.
"Small"? Typical support team for big and successfull gaas game is 1000-2000 people. Their full-time numbers comparable to absolute peaks of AAA game.
It's not "a small team" - and exactly this requirement is what led to cancellation of faction.

Its crazy think how Sony decided to Buy Bungie...
Bungie was the main pioneer of GaaS in console and continues being one of the top GaaS players in console, plus in PC Destiny 2 continues being a one of the top 3 (or top 10) top grossing games of the year every year. Broke records creating IPs like Halo and Destiny.

To buy them for $2.4B was a very cheap price specially considering that Bungie itself was going to be producing a lot of money, but on top of that they could use their knowledge and expertise in GaaS/MP/FPS/new IP creation to add it on top of the ones their other teams have.

After a couple years of integration, removing redundancies, reorganizations they'll start to make a difference and in the mid/long term will be seen as the best SIE acquisition. It's a very good acquisition.

There is well known phenomenon where women do their best to convince other women to cut their healthy beautiful femine hair as short as possible(which is one of common attraction triggers for males) out of jellousy- they compete covertly, not overtly like us guys.

The researchers found that women who reported higher levels of intrasexual competitiveness were more likely to recommend that clients have more hair cut off when the hair was in good condition and clients expressed a preference for minimal cutting. The reason behind this recommendation might be to subtly manipulate the appearance of their rivals. By advising more extensive haircuts, these women could potentially diminish the physical attractiveness of other women.

Bungie basically was determined to do same thing, they were insecure, or rather knew full well their flagship marathon gaas might suck, so just to be on the safe side they advised TLOU upcoming game to be cancelled, which simply meant less competition vs their own shitty product :)

Wanted to try concord, Sonys ability to make a damn shooter last gen and this gen is embarrassing especially after the PS3's shooter renaissance.

TLOU multiplayer is a lot of fun, it's a shame we never got factions. I believe it would have been a success because there isn't too much like it on the market BUT the MTX issue with trying to sell funny looking skins in a gritty post-apoc world was a legit concern.

You keep bringing up Discord numbers like they are a holy grail. The same Discord numbers you brought up that has Valorant first, Fortnite second and Marathon has more Discord subs than PUBG. I'm pretty sure Fortnite is played the most by a mile.

If there's so many people itching to play the alpha why did the Steam count go from 6,919 on day one and dropped like a rock by the next day? And then trickled down to almost nothing by the end of the test. Nobody wanted to stick around. Ad they kept sending out codes in waves, yet it still nosedived.
