How long did it take you to return the money to the buyer?
I guess I'm in the minority, but unless you held onto the money for a significant amount of time, I don't think you should be hit with a neutral or negative. $90 is crazy for shipping and I feel like had you asked the buyer to cover the shipping, they would have asked for a refund anyway.
I feel they should understand as well.. I definitely would have been ok with it. (depending on the time and communication of course!)

I'm inclined to agree, but it all hinges on communication.
How much time was it between finalizing the deal and realizing the shipping was outrageous? Did bearcatjosh immediately inform the buyer of the situation? Did they ask the buyer to cover it? Split the cost? Offer a refund? Etc.
I think as long as the buyer was kept in the loop throughout the process a neutral seems like a bit much. But if I'm reading the seller's post right, it sounds like they found out shipping was too high, sold the item locally, and then informed the buyer and refunded them their money. I can see why the buyer might leave neutral feedback in that case. Even if all roads would have lead to a refund, it's all about that communication. bearcatjosh, if I am misinterpreting your post and this is now how it went down then my apologies.

Personally I would hope you are removed from the PS/PB list, or at least suspended for 5+ transactions. You should have looked into shipping before agreeing to the sale, or let them know that they would have to pay the extra.
And i do have a little bias just because shipping was to Hawaii and having lived there I hate buyers that wont ship there. USPS is right about the same price as shipping from SF to NY as to HI, you still are covered with everything and the islands actually have really good post offices. Just ship USPS and call it a day. Might cost you $2 for a box and five extra minutes.
Edit: Thinking a little more I really think it should be negative column with no status. Feedback is supposed to show trends and let a potential buyer seller judge what your next transaction will be like, you're last one was neutral.
Or to put it another way, what about the person who might have 25 positives then a neutral and then gets 25 more? You both have 50 positives, but you would be PB/PS while your most recent is neutral he will just be GB/GS but having had a longer current streak of positives. (Numbers for above are probably wrong, haven't actually looked at them recently)
