Can a proper gamer ignore Nintendo games?

Absolutely. I loved Nintendo of the past, don't get me wrong and I'm sure they make some very fine games nowadays. However, there are so many great games on the PC and PS3 that my time is more than occupied. They do have the platformers that aren't really all that served well on the two aforementioned platforms, but I dont' really want to shell out $150 for the Wii just to play a few games.

No.

Those Paper Mario games are RPGs - ie something completely different to standard Mario fare.

Your argument has gone from "Mario games are all the same" to "too many games with Mario."

I wasn't arguing about Mario games, just asking a question. the Mario games have been more innovative and experimental when compared to Zelda, Animal Crossing, Smash Bros, Pokemon and what not

I'm playing the DS right now. I play a little then I look up at the Neogaf and laugh, then I play some more. Ha, Mario just stepped on a turtle. That rascal.

In a general sense, yes, Mario is the most innovative franchise Nintendo has, and it is quite innovative. They do new experimental stuff with Mario all the time. Animal Crossing and Smash Bros are both pretty stagnant, Zelda is somewhere in the middle and Pokemon is...Pokemon.

The difference for me is that when we get another Animal Crossing everyone rightfully says "what the fuck Nintendo give us something new" and when we get a new Uncharted that looks to have pretty much the same cover-shooting directed-climbing gameplay as the other entries everyone is like "OMG!"

Aren't there something like a dozen Mario games for Wii?

I don't know about the distinction between "RPGs" and the rest.

It's fine to ignore them. Maybe they're not your cup of tea.

....

Although if you say "They're the same thing over and over again" or "They suck" or "They're Kiddy", it comes off as willful ignorance.

Wait, yeah

Rules

Let's do those!

1. A proper game always grips the controller or mouse with a single pinky extending outward.

2. A proper gamer uses a single 3D monocle.

3. A proper gamer has relabled every lettered button on their controller in to "T"

4. A proper game has played minimum 1/6th of a single licensed platformer and no more than 1/20th of any licensed platformer except where noted vis a vis titles such as Yo Noid! which are bangin' awesome.

I love this idea! A good old fashioned list thread!

I'd totally agree with that. I am not a fan of the annualized franchises of this generation.

I skipped bioshock 2, but think that infinite looks really good. Oh, I forgot about Kirby's Epic Yarn. That was a really interesting treatment for an establish IP.

I don't really think that playing a Nintendo game is any kind of pre-requisite for being a proper gamer.

I mean, I know people who don't like Adventure, Platforming or Metroid (haha, FPS light), but thoroughly enjoy RPG, RTS, and puzzle games. It doesn't make them any less of a gaming fan, I don't think... and it really comes down to if one enjoys and gets some form of satisfaction from playing the game.

BS2 doesn't get enough love. I had way more fun playing it than BS1. But everyone says BS1 is better because you got to watch a non-interactive video of your character pummelling the antagonist to death with a golf club.

6. A proper gamer will complain endlessly that a Steam game should be a dollar cheaper if they want to buy it but will buy console games from Amazon on sale for $54.99 and go "Eh, might as well."

Haw. We haven't had manuals for years.

Let me find that link to a PDF you can download. You'll also need to enter a 36 character code to sign up for your free Gamer+ account.

Did you make sure to pre-order?

Forgot to pre-order. Just found out about the "Proper Gamer Manual or PGM." I hope I can score a copy because I want to be a proper gamer.

I can agree with these terms.

You know, it's funny that I got a Wii just to play RE (0, Remake, and 4), Arc Rise Fantasia, Tales of Symphonia, and Muramasa.

...and Super Mario Galaxy, right? That's...that's what you meant to say...right?

Plenty people on GAF and elsewhere seem to have the ignorance is bliss moto. So, yes, they can. Should they? Well, it's only their loss really so it doesn't matter to me or others.

When i asked the wife if she was going to sign up for GAF she pointed out that that would eat into her gaming time, so she didn't.

Can a proper gamer ignore Nintendo? Of course. They can ignore Sony and MS as well. Proper gamer is just someone elses judgement call - a "proper gamer" probably doesn't care - too busy "proper gaming" ;)

7. BOMBA games only

If you haven't played "__________," you are not a hardcore gamer.
What kind of discussion are you expecting to get out of such a pathetic generalisation? Is there a minimum set of games that each and every gamer is required to play, lest their commitment to their hobby be disaffirmed?

I did a Let's Play of ARF for a while.

Good music but hilaribad everything else. Also it was eating like three hours of my day to play it and edit it down to 15 minutes for youtube.

Nope. Not even Zelda.

:D

lol , yeah seriously - when does the list stop ?

Every essential game from beginning of gaming until now or you aren't a proper gamer!

p.s. i'd hazard most "proper gamers" don't post on GAF (or anywhere)

No but there is a minimum amount of your life that is supposed to be dedicated to games. 38.7% of your life should be dedicated to playing video games. If you fall below this percentage you're not a proper gamer but a lamer. Yes I know "lamer' is pretty lame itself but I could not think of anything better.

The List (1st edition)

Tetris
Pac-man
1 Super Mario 2d
1 Super Mario 3d
1 Zelda 2d (excluding CDI)
1 Zelda 3d
1 Sonic
1 Megaman
1 Metal Gear Solid Game
1 GTA game
1 Valve Game
1 Blizzard Game
1 Western RPG
1 Eastern RPG
1 Fighting game (street fighter, soul calibur, something)
1 Turn-based strategy game (Advance wars, Final Fantasy Tactics, Civilization)
1 Real Time strategy game (Starcraft, Warcraft, Halo Wars)
Owned at least 1 handheld.
Owned consoles from more than one manufacturer.
Has played PC games.

This is not an exhaustive list. If something is missing, it's because it hasn't been added yet. Suggest it, and I'll add it if consensus backs it. This is only the first version on the list and it is simply meant as a start off point.

The idea is to make a "required reading" list for someone to consider themselves a gaming enthusiast. A new gamer would aspire to complete the items on the list in order to form a more well-rounded opinion of gaming. Any help on the list would be appreciated.

I think it's an unwritten rule that proper ("core") gamers probably already experience Nintendo products without being told by other gamers.

They make some of the best games ever. Especially now. Many other companies are focusing on "immersion" or "cinematic experiences", but Nintendo delivers in actually making fun games that aren't full of themselves. They're just full of fun.

I can only think of the stereotype that assume Nintendo is "kiddy" as the only group to ignore all of their games.

I happen to like those "immersion" and "cinematic experiences", it's actually part of why I play games, and just because they're cinematic doesn't mean they're not fun. in fact, one of the reason why I don't own Wii to play Mario Galaxy is because I assume them to be just like any previous Mario, a very fun game, focused on gameplay with very simple stories and cinematic experiences. I've played a lot of mario games but I never actually finish any of them, they're very fun to play and a very good game, they just can't keep my attention long enough, and without the push of interesting character, stories, or cinematic moment, I just lose my motivation to play them.
