Hehe, I'm browsing RFD and there's a poll there. Surprisingly, the Cons are only getting 43% of the vote. I expected more support from the nation's worst penny-pinchers.

A bunch of us (all ages) made a joke about Stephen Harper at Thanksgiving dinner tonight, and my sister in law (early 40s) said "I guess I'm surrounded by a bunch of Liberals. Yay! Free Money!"

Ugh. -_-

RFD's off topic is terrible. The arguments being made in that election thread alone is just... ugh
A massive influx of illiterate Muslim economic refugees (many of whom are ISIS sympathisers)

Well we know Sharia Law will be coming here soon. Better convert asap.

and a response to a long list of reasons why Harper must go...

Wicked list. He's getting my vote even more now.

My wife and I voted this afternoon in Cantley Quebec. We had a 30-minute wait. I hope the increase in voters continues into the General Election day.

Cheers

That's my work interview I was telling you guys about.
Glad they're being vocal about it and bringing up he only takes scripted interviews.

really lol

well it makes sense since those leaks occurred... He will likely just go to interviews set up by those right wing independent media channels

As blabbering and fear mongering about the Niqab loses Steam Harper cancels interviews that don't have questions in his favour

guy can't go in hiding for the whole week... unless of course something happens that is in his favour

He's spent the whole campaign avoiding questions not in his favour, and any time they've infiltrated his bubble his supporters have booed them down. I don't think hiding from the real world for one more week will be that tough for him.

Did turkey dinner with the parents tonight as well. They were leaning Green and Undecided at the start of the campaign but they've both been swung over to the Conserrvatives as they've completely bought Harper's smear campaign of Trudeau. My father despises the Ontario Liberals and my mom thinks Trudeau "isn't ready for the job" even though I told her plain as day he has the same amount of time in parliament that Harper had when he won the job and my dad backed me up on it.

Ah well... I'd be more frustrated with them if I thought for a second their riding was competitive. (It's not.)

Who's the front runner in their riding?

Advance polls: long waits and a protest clown

Truly sad that there are people who dedicate so much time to dictating what women wear. Thankfully, they're little movement doesn't seem to be popular. I hope it stays that way.

I didn't know that we had Pegida in Canada. That's a little scary.

My mum told me that people were wearing face coverings to vote and I said that was a great idea! Then she told me it was in protest, and not solidarity.

The way I look at it, if you are able to vote freely without being harassed then that's a win, right?

just to calm some people having fear

While we are hoping for a liberal or NDP government... if harper wins a minority, the libs and NDP will form a coalition, forcing harper out.

It's all but certain to happen this time around if the election doesn't pan out.

Oh I've read it. It's fully deserved. You never not take an opportunity to shit on Québec.

What do you base this on? Mulcair is open to a coalition, but Trudeau said he wasn't.

I think so too. Shit's gonna go down if CPC get a minority win, no matter what the Liberals are saying right now. There will be way too much pressure to get rid of Harper.

If the Liberals and NDP were to do a collation, what is the one platform item each of you would want to have put forward into the collation as the compromise.

For NDP to get majority - I would want them to allow us to go into deficit for their infrastructure spending plan.

For Liberals to get majority - I would want them to take on the $15 per day childcare initiative.

Ideally both want a ranked voting ballot of same kind, ideally not Australia's format. Most NDP voters don't trust Liberals on that due to previous comments by Trudeau or Liberals, which is fair, but we'll see. At the very least, anything is better then FPTP.

I would want PR so I can vote Green. The other stuff can wait. If we end up with another bad electoral system, we're screwed.

Wasn't it the one where you were pissed off that games are bilingual in Canada? That's pretty related.

If the Liberals come out on top, they'll either stall on electoral reform, or want to implement a system (ranked candidate votes) that favours them, as corrupt as that is - just how the Conservatives don't want reform as the current system favours them.

The most important thing to pressure the Liberals into doing is adopting an equitable election system that removes the representative failure the current system represents. That would appear to be PR? I haven't examined it closely though.

AV is not better than FPTP. The most effective thing people can do right now is call their Liberal candidate and let them know they want PR.

Regarding all these huge ass line for advance polling and people getting bitchy about it:

People do know on Election Day they'll be way more ballot boxes open right? I mean, I get that maybe some people have a busy Monday or something but 1.whatever million people that are lining up for an hour or more then spazzing out about it on tv. Just vote during the actual election and it won't take nearly as long.

Tiered voting (6 votes per person, 3 for first choice, 2 for second choice and 1 for third choice) with proportional representation makes the most sense to me

It opens up the likelihood of more conservative and liberal parties, allows your vote to count and allows more voice to fringe issues

They should also ban polls, ban attack ads and work on other issues to help remove vote influencing.

Then make voting day fall on the day after thanksgiving and make it a 100% no work voting holiday

Then they have to remove the negative aspects of voting (jury duty, for example) and instead incentivise it with a lottery funded by the taxes from the provincial lottery companies and have a winner per riding.

Make people want to vote... even when they don't want to vote.

IMO, ranked ballots should be limited to 1st and 2nd choice.

fuck 3rd choice, that would give Conservatives a boost

or green party.

but then it's 3 votes vs 1 vote

it would also force conservatives to vote for a liberal party, as long as no other conservative parties exist.... and when they do get a 2nd party it will cause vote splitting and normalization, as long as current 60%+ keep voting left

traditional ranked voting is nonsense.

Well, you don't actually have to rank all the candidates if you don't want to. Just rank your first and second choices and leave the third space blank.

As far as the prospects for electoral reform go, I think there's a much better chance of the Liberals (or the NDP, had they gotten in) following through on that, simply because of how the electoral field has changed. With Tories now having such a high floor, as a result of the end of vote-splitting between the PCs and the Alliance, and the Liberals having come very close to utter destruction in 2011, there's more incentive for them to avoid such lopsided seat totals in the future.

For some reason I showed up an hour early. Had to kill an hour walking around and getting coffee from MCD.

I'm excited to vote for the first time! Chyeah!

Wait what? Why wouldn't it just be rank your 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th etc. Why 3 for first choice?

Ranked voting is only good for close races where youre choosing between one or the other

The idea for 6 votes with PR is to build out the government in a sensible manner.

it embraces party selection and helps avoid becoming a 2 choice system

It allows people to blend their vote... helpful for people who aren't ideologically aligned to any one party...

If the final vote totals are anything like that, I understand the Liberals plan to convene a meeting the day after the election to proclaim Trudeau as the god-king of the Liberal Party.

Trudeau and Gerald Butts would pretty much be award free blowjobs from all Liberal staffers for life.
