Canadian General Election (OT) - #elxn42: October 19, 2015

I can't believe the NDP are doubling-down on the whole "vote for us this time because you voted for us last time" thing:

If even someone like Paul Dewar is doing it -- a guy who won pretty handily in 2011, as you can see -- then their internal polling must be even worse than anyone is catching.

Damn, thought he was wayyyy older when he became Prime Minister.

He's 56? yikes.
Thing about Joe Clark is that he's always looked to be 50-60... even when he was in his late 30s.

Voted at my Elections Canada office today. Took no time at all. Was suitably impressed by the fact that I had to write in my vote for my local candidate and then sealed my ballot in TWO envelopes. Very little room for spoilage or tampering.

Apparently they've been getting a steady stream of people all day long despite the advance polls being open this weekend.

I voted yesterday in the evening. The polling station was at a school 5 minutes from my house. When I got there, it was basically empty. When I went to the front desk, they couldn't find my name even though I registered online a few days ago. I gave them my driver's license (and only that) and they got me registered. I went to line up and had 3 old people ahead of me (only one station). The process was super slow but there weren't many people ahead of me so I was out in like 10 minutes. I didn't have to write any names because the ballot had the names on them - I just hopelessly marked an X by NDP. I walked out and saw another old person behind me.

One day they say they don't look at polls.

The next day they comission a CROP poll in Papineau and quote selective dars.

Then when polls are against them they say shsin " polls dont matter"

Then at local levels they send out flyers with polls

++notice that CROP has gone missing since

+ No to the TPP

You realize if the TPP goes through in the US and Japanese governments and we're not a part of it, we are locked out of an absolutely huge market and our economy will be greatly impacted.

An intelligent decision is to review and try to re-negotiate the important items that affect the left leaning sensibilities of our new government (like pharma rules).

I'm as left leaning (socialist) as they come and completely disagree with most of the TPP, but unless it doesn't pass those individual governments, it's here to stay and it would be absolutely stupid to pull out.

I am still going to be sceptical until the CPC is third in pollings

I mean anything could happen in which the CPC can spin to their favour (of fear)

What happens if the Liberals lose this election.
Then the picture will be of crows eating gutter trash.

I'm expecting a Conservative minority and will not change my mindset one iota until next Monday no matter how many polls I see.
I will be MORE than happy to be proven wrong.

This is surreal, I can't believe I'm cheering for Justin Trudeau to win the election.

At this point I guess a potted plant winning would be better than Harper coming back.

Mainstreet has released a bunch of riding polls in multiple provinces today

The biggest surprise for me is the ndp candidate being in the lead in Edmonton Center. The ndp could potentially get a third riding on election night in Edmonton if this ends up being true.

Nice to see Ed Holder losing London West. Lived there up 'til last April and frankly I was getting tired of throwing out/defacing his mailers.

At this point I guess a potted plant winning would be better than Harper coming back.

Do we know how the potted plant feels about Niqabs?

A potted plant. An inanimate carbon rod. Obama. A communist. Rob Ford... okay, that's going too far.

I hope the ndp leaps over the CPC next in the polls. Then my dream will come true.

Me too, and I'm not just saying that. I seriously believe that we're getting a CPC minority. I'm more interested in what comes after the election than the election itself.

Totally not a loaded question, but are you guys young?

Edit: I only ask because the last 10 years are somewhat anomalous in Canadian politics. The Libs winning is more a return to form (In the electorate bouncing from Lib to Con and back again) than an outlier.

28. I'm just jaded because I've never voted for a candidate that won in any riding :) And i've voted plenty federally and provincially.

But I am well aware of how big the Liberal party used to be.

I think my and others disbelief in the polls suggesting a Conservative loss comes from my own disbelief that we have had such a stupid government constantly getting away with murder, and an equally stupid electorate not caring to vote him out time and time again for ten years :)

So much for everyone telling me vote NDP in Vancouver-Granville as the best chance to defeat the Conservatives.

I'm 20. And like above, I'm shocked at how much the CPC has been able to get away with and how successful the niqab thing has been for them. I've also heard that their polls are understated and that they have a strong base. The CPC is dirty and will do anything to win, including cheating - and they won't get in trouble for it. That is why I can't see them losing. They are willing to do what the other parties are not.

This is why I don't vote strategically. An early popular sentiment like this (re: liberals) can actually be offset by people voting for who they think will win prior to someone actually starts winning. I'm not overly concerned at this point but it sure would be nice to have this thing in the bag rather than having to wait until Harpers ass is out the door.

You are acting like an idealist. Acting on your principles is noble but the reality is it doesn't matter. If the US and Japan pass it, these things are going to be impacted anyways, so whether we're in it or not, we have the same situation as we consume that copyright media from the US and Japan.

Unless we had a direct trade agreement with China to offset the TPP, our economy will be drastically affected by not participating in the TPP.

So if you want the TPP to not be passed in Canada - don't talk to Canadians, talk to Americans. Because if America passes it, economically we are forced into participating and your concerns regarding pharma rules, copyright rules, internet rules won't matter because we consume that from American companies that need to follow those rules as they are in the TPP.

It would be a case of cutting off the nose in spite the face.

Those poll numbers are rad, can't believe we have a realistic shot at getting legal weed.

Whether it happens under the next government or not, it's inevitable. With what's happening in the US, it'll come here sooner or later. Just gotta be patient.

(I might be pessimistic, but I'm pretty sure it won't happen under the next government even if Trudeau wins.)

Oh god, if I hear someone talk about that again I'm gonna throw 'em out of a window...

gaboumafou won't even address the niqab issue. What else is he hiding?

I love the libs, but I wouldn't put them an inch above a dirty trick or two. They practically wrote the book on them. (That's about 70% a joke)

I'd like to think the Liberals as an institution in Canada is bigger than Steven Harper, and while he was particularly good at kicking them while he was down, it was only a matter of time before they pulled a Cena and got back up.

what are the Liberals opinion on the KeyStone Pipeline?

Literally googled 'liberal keystone pipeline' and this was a top result.

http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2015/09/10/liberal-leader-justin-trudeau-talks-pipeline-politics.html

VANCOUVER—Justin Trudeau has renewed his party’s opposition to the Northern Gateway pipeline, pledged support for theKeystone XL project, but is withholding judgment on a third, controversial pipe to ship oil through Eastern Canada.

From September.

... You do realize they changed how they were polling between then and now, right?

No kitten? I should look up what they changed.

I've always argued that prohibition drives consumption. When something is prohibited it encourages buying in larger quantities, since the risk is in obtaining it and a normal person would try to mitigate risk. But then you have a tonne of whatever it is sitting around.

As the liberals gain momentum, the conservatives on my facebook feed are starting to lose their minds. The nonsense they are spouting about how it's going to be the end of the world. They have absolutely nothing to say for themselves.

I don't have the stats on hand right now, but I'm sure that was confirmed in countries / states that legalized pot.
