Both.

Yes, I'm in Vancouver-Granville now.

The Liberals only got 13.4% of the vote in the 2011 election. So if that 19% is correct that would mean Liberal support is up in BC. I'm not sure how you get them losing one of their traditionally safe seats in BC from that. Although the redistricting does muck with things a bit.

Going by redistributed 2011 votes the conservatives would have won Vancouver Granville so it's not a safe Liberal seat.

Good point that Liberal support is up in BC as well. My main point was just to point out that it's a pretty competitive race, so keep an eye on the polls, as the Libs might not necessarily be the leading opposition party depending on how the campaign goes.

Problem for the change-of-govt majority: the most telling blows in this debate have been launched by one opposition leader against another.

Yeah, kinda right here.

May just said all the right things about C-51. Trudeau messed up on that when it was going through the house of commons.

Yup. I'm of the opinion it was mainly a gamble to try and peel some Conservative voters and it backfired on Trudeau when the bill went through. And it's suicide to change your mind so soon, so he's got no choice but to defend it.

I can hear Canada Gaming GAF screaming about the shitty Canadian dollar as Harper talks about how awesome Canada's economy is right now.

May is right. There are so many other things that they didn't touch on because they were so busy jumping on each other over stuff like some Quebec stuff no one gives a crap about. Nice ad. for the Green party.

The contrast between her closing remarks and Trudeau's was ridiculous.

Trudeau had the best closing statement. Very personal and not the same old recycled recap of the issues.

I preferred May's. Idk, I don't like it when politicians mention their children, or "why I got into politics" speeches that don't pass the smell test. In terms of presentation, Trudeau's was definitely best though.

Mulcair screwed up with the closing statement. That flash card shifting was annoying. Can't even remember Harper said.

Elizabeth May came out looking best. Trudeau did better than I thought. Mulcair didn't come out looking bad, but I was hoping he'd leave Harper in tears. Harper didn't actually look good to me, he looked somewhat discredited, but I'm not a Conservative so I'm clearly biased there.

So...people's verdicts?
May was the best. She said things that I didn't even know I wanted her to say. My only issue with her was her comment about ISIS following the Quran. If that's how the leader of the Green party thinks, that's very disappointing. In any case, most of her policies seemed good and basically everything she said was awesome.
Actually, it's more Mulcair -- he's said this would be his only English debate, and he's pulled himself out of the others. It'll be interesting to see if he changes that after tonight
I don't know what he's so scared of. I know he's polling really well but he's pretty good at arguing. I want to see more debates with all four party leaders. If he's really scared, he could just play it safe like he did today.

I had a weird fuzzy feeling with Trudeau's closing statement.

It's a Tie between Muclair/Trudeau for me. I think we need a another debate

C'mon, Harper is pretty convincing, as much as that pains me to say.
Yeah, he took some MAJOR hits but he handled them well. He looked a little hurt when the camera showed him while Mulcair or May were talking but whenever he was given a chance to speak, he would lie his way out of it and the speaker would move onto the next question.

So...people's verdicts?

- Harper performed well as usual, but he felt maybe a little weaker than in the previous election's main English debate. No real surprises, but he was goaded into admitting that we're in a recession, and he did without making it a big deal

- Mulcair surprised the hell out me with how calm and collected he was. Super kudos to whoever has been coaching him. Lots of good points. Few knockout blows, though his environmental areas were very strong.

- Justin Trudeau had passion in spades. But his passion outweighs his speaking abilities. He took a bit of a pounding on C-51, but still held his ground.

- Elizabeth May also surprised the hell out of me. To me, she filled some of the gap from Gilles Duceppe not being present this time. Hard facts and figures, and ready to stick it to the Prime Minister.

Was there a winner? Honestly, the person with the best performance overall was probably Elizabeth May, but Mulcair definitely performed far better than I thought he would.

I think either May or Trudeau had the best performance, which probably means that May was the best. She sounded like a voice of reason most of the time, and she probably exceeded most people's expectations. Don't know if it'll win her any votes, though, but I think it's enough to keep her seat.

Trudeau may have been a little jumpy, but I don't think that hurts him. He's supposed to be the young, passionate guy, so playing into that probably won't hurt him. He had some pretty great lines, and his closing statement was miles better than everyone else's.

Harper was Harper. If I were a Conservative supporter, I'd probably feel reassured. That "Mr. Harper, nobody believes you" line was arguably the closest we had to a zinger, but as I said, it probably won't hurt his Conservative support.

Mulcair was really underwhelming. He never had the right tone, he vanished for long swaths of time, and I feel like he tried to channel Layton but failed miserably. Also, flubbing his closing statement was pretty terrible, considering he was reading it.

Of course, the number of people who watched a debate on a Thursday night in August was probably extremely low, so I'm not sure it'll change much.

I thought May and Muclair won. Trudeau was good but maybe a bit too bombastic for my liking.

My dad liked Trudeau the most.

Was getting caught part of your plan?
The two things needed for Trudeau closing statement was the camera zooming in on him and emotional Thomans Newman music playing in the background.

I was almost sure we'd fade to stock footage of a waving Canadian flag and a flock of doves after that.

You said voters in Vancouver Centre should consider switching. That's what I was referring to.

I don't how well researched threehundredeight is, but it shows both V-Centre and V-Granville both firmly Liberal with projections of 44.4% and 45.6%.

Didn't get a chance to watch the debate. Anywhere I can get quick run down of what everyone said? Were their any major gaffes and a candidate lost your vote?

Only caught the last 15 minutes, but felt I was just watching a bunch of guys motor mouthing about issues in 60 seconds or less. I can't stand this shit. Almost nothing of substance.

You should've been there earlier. It was almost akin to this image

Still need to check out the US Republicans debate later.

Trudeau's closing statement was like something out of an 8th grade election. "I want to be your class president because I care"

Mulcair's closing statement came out kinda awkward and robotic.

Harper's closing statement I don't even remember.

May's closing statement I thought was the best. She mentioned some other issues people care about and raised the profile of the Green Party.
