Canadian General Election (OT) - #elxn42: October 19, 2015

Other than that completely horrific closing statement, Mulcair was the star of this show.

Such consistent pwnage.
(except for that closing statement)

May was alright, but she needs to lay off the crackpot conspiracy type talk.

Trudeau came off like a complete PRbot. #he'snotready

Some interesting data I took from the Maclean comments.

Holy shit, some reporter/media guy just straight up told Trudeau's closing statement was "horrible". Daaammnnnnn...

And apparently Harper is the only one not talking to journalists after the debate...

It's not even funny anymore.

He can't just fire Senators. They have to retire at 75. He can just appoint new ones. Martin tried appointing NDP senators, but they refused to take their spots.

(Which leads to the question of who, exactly, he would expect to table his legislation if he were to become PM, but that's another thing he just kind of glosses over.)

He basically repeated the same script from one of his ads.

It was all rhetoric.

It was a debate. Are you expecting non-rhetoric? The fact Mulcair straight-up read his closing statement (yet, somehow, still screwed it up) should let you know that everything all the leaders said was scripted.

In any case...I think that May just won:

It seems no one has picked up on May's screw up when talking about ISIS. It's probably because the media doesn't care about them. I hope it stays that way. The Green party needs all the help they can get.
The courts will eventually force him to fill the seats.

Yeah, with blue. I don't know the rules. Is there anything preventing him from making the entire senate Conservative?

I fired off about three tweets about May, and one retweet about Trudeau.

I think we have keep in mind Twitter's young demographic. The average age of those 100k tweets is probably 20. The average age of polls will be 50. Those Harper numbers are probably way higher if adjusted for age.

Nope. It's the PM's prerogative. When Mulroney came into power in 1984, the Liberals had such an overwhelming majority that he eventually had to use some Constitutional manoeuvring to appoint enough Senators to give him a majority there (which he used to pass the GST in 1990).

Trudeau's was almost a carbon copy of his ads.

Sure, all the closing remarks were scripted, but his were the most egregious.

Surprised that Harper hasn't done that then. This whole senate thing seems like a joke.

I haven't really listened to Justin Trudeau speak publicly before, but is he always this bad? I actually couldn't stand to watch him speak, it felt so forced and awkward.

Felt really scripted...actually everyone did except for May. We need Jack Layton back ;__;

What is Jack Layton? This is the first debate that I've watched so I don't know what Jack Layton means (I know who he is).
Jack Layton basically owned the last debates because he came off as a human being and not a politician-bot.

Seriously? Because I thought it was pretty amazing. Apart from Wells stepping over his last line, it gave me goosebumps.

ETA: It's here, for reference.
I think the worst part is that before that the reporter asked, "More young people are watching The Daily Show finale than your debate. Why should they care and why should they vote for you?"

The reporter was clearly trying to get some kind of soundbite and was fishing hard. If it was Harper, he probably would have just walked off stage at that point. lol

I just realized that this is the first debate that I watched without Duceppe in it... and it's sad that he wasn't there. He probably would have owned the entire format.

The happy warrior, basically. He went into the last election in a distant third place, and killed it in the debates by looking sunnier than Ignatieff and smiling as he kept knifing Harper in the back. I hated him and found him incredibly corny, but it worked really well, as the debates showed. Optimism works. I felt like it came a lot more naturally to Trudeau than to Mulcair, who looked like he was going to pull a muscle every time he smiled.

National Post: Justin Trudeau ekes out win in leaders’ debate with no knockout punches, little high drama

if anybody goes on HuffingtonPost or sees NDP on Facebook, all you see is fake smiling Tom Mulcair smiling hard

like click HuffPo Canada, politics.... yous see Tom, taught to fake smile, smile hard

I saw Jack Layton and Tom Mulcair from 10 feet away, Tom first than Jack after. Tom came of fake while Jack was the real deal

Tom is trying TOO HARD to smile as much as Jack did but... Tom does it fake

I heard that. That reporter has no dignity.

I've always gotten the sense that Maclean's was trash for some reason, probably some news I heard or some garbage Maclean's article I read at the dentist when I was a kid. I looked at their Wikipedia page to confirm my suspicions. That being said, I think they handled the debates really well in a non-partisan way. And the data they posted in the comments were just a reflection of the facts and didn't seem like there was any agenda behind them. The moderator wasn't bad either and grilled both Harper and Mulcair.
Basically: debating with a smile instead of debating with the fist in the air.
I feel that Elizabeth May was the closest to both of your descriptions of Jack Layton.

IIRC the reporter was from Global. He also sounded nervous as hell and was umming a lot.

As for Macleans... it's like the only news magazine in Canada, so they sort of win by default. Certainly it's Roger's most prestigious property, so it makes sense that they'd use that to headline the debate and not call it the "CityTV/OMNI national debates" or something equally ludicrous. (The SportsNet debate!)

I was skeptical going in, since Wells has written a couple of books about Harper's brilliance, but he did a good job.

Harper stumbled terribly, but that's not surprising since he is a fuck up anyway.

Mulcair is creepy and seems like he doesn't even know where he is half the time. Plus I dislike his pandering to the separatists.

Trudeau I think did the best to not fuck up, but he didn't really wow either. Still would prefer him in office.

May presented herself well, I was impressed. Still don't want the green party in power of course.
