Captain America 3 to square off against Batman/Superman in 2016

If it wasn't Cap, it'd be Thor 3 or Guardians of the Galaxy 2. Marvel isn't going to stick an unknown property in the May slot when they've got more tested franchises they know they can open big with.

May is the perfect time to try and 'go big or go home' with a new Marvel franchise ignoring this current BvS 'bake off'. Films released in May tend to hit big and fast. The first Thor film opened in May (IIRC.., right?) opposite Fast/Furious in some territories.

If Marvel/Disney are as confident as they appear why can't the do it again and launch another big franchise....., unless of course they are growing less confident at the Marvel IPs they have left at their disposal. Dr Strange?! Maybe too weird for mainstream audiences?

Also I'm not sure how GOTG has earned a mention alongside Thor and Captain America in your post. There is a lot of road still to go in that film and talking Raccoon or no I'm not sure it's the slam dunk some people think it is.

I find it hard to believe that Marvel would churn out another Captain America film in 2 years. From a timing sense, wouldn't it be Iron Man 4 releasing around then? That would do some damage to BvS unless RDJ hasn't signed on yet

Would be funny if, at this year's Comic-Con, Kevin Feige does a "one more thing" at the Marvel panel and Zack Snyder walks out. Cap3 and Batman vs. Superman are actually now one, four-hour Amalgam movie.

Yeah it's a contract thing. Downey's current deal is for Iron man 3, Avengers 2 and Avengers 3. And since he's super duper expensive, Marvel is not in a hurry to cram an Iron Man 4 in their line-up.

Iron Man 2 came out 2 years after the first one. Same with Thor: The Dark World.

Marvel/Disney are really impressed by the Russos and the positive buzz Winter Soldier is getting. That's why Cap 3 is happening.

The most interesting things here to me are that this is being announced before the previous movie has even been released, and before a new Thor movie, which has always come first until now. Also this is the only time other than Iron Man 2 where a sequel is being released only 2 years after the previous one. Marvel must be REAL happy with how the Winter Soldier has turned out.

EDIT: okay, Thor had a 2-year gap too, but for some reason it seemed longer. Probably due to the second being released late in the year.

Don't see Captain America winning at the box office to be honest, and he is my favorite. All WB has to do is show a commercial with Bats and Sups about to square off and the whole world will be in line to watch that shit. I can't see them opening the same weekend though :P If they do, then I'm for sure going to see both that same weekend. Bats first then Captain.

What will it take for the 00/10s trend of comic book movies to end? Will a major film have to crash? Will it be Wonder Woman?

It's never going to end. The passable films outweigh the terrible films and they all still pull in a shitload of money. We're stuck with superhero schlock for a very long time unfortunately. Just look at it this way: we have to endure the barrage of blockbuster garbage so that studios have the money to finance smaller projects.

Well it's got a lot of good hype going, and Marvel seems to be looking at as their next franchise with merch and an animated series now coming out. It could bomb, or it could be terribad or something like that, but I'm assuming it ends up good enough and successful enough to be their next big(ish) thing.

Also, I don't think it's fair to say they're not confident in their new properties. I mean, the fact that Ant-Man and Strange are getting movies at all shows some measure of confidence there. But ever since Avengers, they've always looked to open the summer with a sequel and realistically an existing franchise will do better against Superman/Batman than a new one. The first Thor opened May too, but it's not like they had any other options at the time.

Have they announced a Thor 3 yet? I mean, I didn't like the first 2 but I'm just curious if they're planning on finishing the trilogy.

I don't know if anything has been announced formally, but they did hire writers for it. Also, I think the ending of Dark World heavily implies that they were angling for a sequel anyway.

Marvel must be REAL happy with how the Winter Soldier has turned out.

True, but I wonder if there might be some contract hold-ups with Thor 3 or another Iron Man. Other posters have mentioned that Downey Jr. is only signed up for more Avengers movies instead of standalone Iron Man movies, and I wonder if Natalie Portman is still on board with Marvel.

Whether they open up alongside each other, it doesn't matter. B/S will rake in the more money, I think. B/S will not only have the nerds coming out to see it, it will have the mainstream coming out as well. Cap3 will have the nerds and nowhere near the mainstream appeal that two of the biggest heroes of all time will have.

Cap 2 is getting some pretty awesome reviews from people getting into screenings. That buzz stays true into release and then with Avengers 2. Cap 3 will be a juggernaut.

WHERE IS MY BLACK PANTHER MOVIE YOU DOUCHEBAGS

yes, I will continue to do this every time until they announce it

Well you know for Marvel it's really hard to bring Wakanda to the screen I mean we see people flying and guys who can topple buildings but an advanced African state is just too unbelievable for people it seems.

Black Panther better be introduced soon or that's some bullshit.

They are filming a big chunk of Avengers 2 in Africa which to me seems to suggest Wakanda. Also, in the cartoon Baron Von Strucker went to Wakanada to mine for that stuff Ultron is made out of and Strucker is in this movie soo....

Just the opening sequence, and it's in Johannesburg.

edit: sorry, just occurred to me that this might be considered a spoiler for anyone especially sensitive to that stuff.

It already lost. Overexposed campy hero over filmic event of the decade. Yeah, sorry cap.

The "filmic event" of the decade was already The Avengers. The general public's reaction to the new Batman is probably going to be "Wait where's Christian Bale?"

I think Bale widows will move on by 2016. I dunno, perhaps the next cap movie will kick ass (I'd love it to) but it's fucking Superman with the Godamned Batman on screen, if that doesn't make your 10 y.o inside nothing will. Maybe The Avengers, but that would be old news by 2016. That's my opinion anyway.

That's kinda boring tbh. To me the only way marvel could match superman and batman together would be getting Spider-Man into the avengers. Cap and Thor are kinda meh on film imo

Fucking sony, would be beautiful if they released spidey for avengers

Edit: also this decade's only been 4 years. Avatar 2, worlds finest, Star Wars sequel, avengers 3 are all gonna be within the same decade. Way premature

Star Wars will probably be the blockbuster event of the decade, and it will be interesting to see how Disney releases the Star Wars trilogy, spinoffs, Avengers, and other Marvel movies in addition to Pixar and other stuff. But Batman/Superman will be a record breaker too.

Sony should give Tobey Maguire Spidey to Marvel and they can keep Andrew Garfield.

JK Simmons is already in the Avengers Assemble universe. ;p

I'll be seeing BvS first just because it'll be something we've never seen on the big screen. If it's going to be better or worse than Cap 3, I really don't care at this point. We'll have to wait and see.

Although I really hope Zack Snyder knows what he's doing.

Without Avengers we wouldn't be getting Avengers 3 or World's Finest (or Days of Future Past or Sinister Six). Star Wars and Avatar are sequels. If something comes out that really shakes things up more then Avengers this decade that would be great but at this point what would it even be?

It's not like Ben Affleck as Batman went under the radar or something. I think people know by now.

1) No way Marvel was going to pit one of their newer movies like Dr. Strange up against S&B. They are trying to establish a new franchise, not send it to its death from the get go. They are probably banking that with the early buzz, Cap 2 will be huge and there will be an audience for Cap 3 to take away from S&B. Trust me, if they were making an Ironman 4, that wouldve been the title to go up against DC, but Marvel is banking Cap 3 will be bigger than Thor 3, so it went with that.

2) From what I understand, the S&B script isn't even complete. WB is probably going to further delay the release date.

Captain America 3 will easily wallop Batman/Superman at the box office and i am a die hard Superman fan too :-(. What they did to Man of Steel was a travesty.
