I've been working all day so I haven't been able to follow up on the story, but I've just read that Boumeddiene is already in Turkey and on her way to Syria. How the bloody hell is this possible?

As far as I know Le Monde claims that Turkish authorities told them that she came from Madrid to Istanbul on the 2nd and left for Syria on the 8th. Apparently she had a return ticket for the next day but she obviously didn't use it. Not sure if there is any truth to this though.

She's probably already in Syria. Perhaps she wasn't wanted or on a no-fly list by the time she left France (on January 2)?

Nobody's asking anybody to respect Charlie Hebdo. I don't think Charlie Hebdo themselves would have asked for respect, since their job is to disrespect everything. All people are asking is that you don't fucking KILL them.

Well, if you read the full article, that's actually what the author is saying.
The article is pretty good, the title is just a tad provocative given the context.

Edit: actually, the author just put my mind into words (aside from the parts talking about the US, as I have no idea what he's talking about there).

I don't think so.

Charlie Hebdo was trash.

Now they've been attacked they're suddenly something to be respected, not just lent sympathy.

The attacks were wrong but that doesn't make Charlie Hebdo right, yet that seems to be the message spreading.

His timing is perfect.

Charlie wasn't trash. It took a gigantic shit upon every religion, and very funnily so. Their cartoons made a lot of people laugh, and if that offended others, so be it.

Communities getting offended for the tiniest reason every chance they get is what undermines our national unity. People need to relax and have a sense of humour.

One great strip from them :

- Rabbis mutilate jewish children by cutting off the tip of their dicks !
- At least, priests are civilized !
- Yeah right, they don't cut off children's dicks, they just ass rape them !
- Demon !

Living 10 minutes from where people will rally tomorrow in Paris. Not yet sure about going myself, but I'm not feeling it at all. I sincerely hope everything will be ok.

Is this some sort of borderline victim blaming?

Is there any way of capturing her if she slipped to Syria?

The mother and sisters of slain jihadist Amedy Coulibaly condemned his attacks in France, offering their "sincere condolences" to the families of the victims, according to a statement sent to AFP on Saturday.

"We condemn these acts. We absolutely do not share these extreme ideas. We hope there will not be any confusion between these odious acts and the Muslim religion," they wrote.

Coulibaly was killed by police on Friday after seizing a Jewish supermarket in Paris where he shot four hostages dead. A day earlier he killed a policewoman in Montrouge, south of the capital.

I keep seeing rantings about Charlie Hebdo being homophobic but no actual cartoons that points in that direction.

I keep seeing racist to and I am not convinced about that either. Help anyone?

What? With what reasoning? I may not know much about Hamas, but that strikes me as weird.

In a statement published in French, they "insist that differences in opinions and thoughts cannot justify murder."

That said, they didn't mention the hostage taking at the Kosher grocery store.

I think it's just oversensitive people who think calling people "enculé" is homophobic

Just people trying to grasp for some kind of justification for why unarmed civilians were murdered in cold blood for drawing satirical cartoons.

Pathetic.

There is no justification, there is no fucking grey area.

they also don't like ISIS. Hamas isn't really primarily religiously motivated and they really don't want to be painted with that brush so it makes sense to me that they would denounce this.

Charlie Hebdo is neither homophobic nor racist. The only gay-related thing I can recall being published in Charlie was a Brokeback Mountain joke by Siné, years ago.

Actually they arent really using it as a justification, but made up shit still feels deeply unsensetive to the victims.

I don't think that's what he implies... He just says that many people are supporting Charlie Hebdo and would have a different opinion in different circonstances. Which is most probably true (although the campus reference is not very good, since it's running on public funds).

Even if I'm definitively not fond of the journal, I don't think it's trash, though. And definitively not racist (especially knowing some of the guys there), like some people think based on a couple of drawings. Deliberately provocative, yes, secularist, definitively. But as long as they stick to legality (which they do, they won nearly all their trials), I'm fine with this. I just don't read it.

Well, I hope 2200 will be enough...
Half of the most important people in Europe will be there, I sure as hell wouldn't want to be responsible for the security planning...
Those are only policemen. I am sure every leader brings his own bodyguard and security personnel. French Special Units will probably on alert too.

I don't know if it was posted already (I haven't seen it), but now things are clear with what happened at the print shop (and answering my previous question in this thread). There were actually 2 people inside with the terrorists. The owner (Michel) and an employee and when the terrorists arrived (ringing at the door!) the owner told the employee to hide. Also he confirms the story with the supplier that met the terrorists. So that's why police didn't assault immediately, because they had a hostage (and another one was inside unknown to them). Even after Michel was released, police knew there is someone else inside (and probably that's why was no information of the release of Michel, to keep the guy inside safe). Meanwhile the hole madness at the shop happened and they had to synchronize. Now everything makes perfect sense.

The story is here.

I like parts of what this guy has to say about it:

So what should we do? We have to condemn obvious racism as loudly as we defend the right to engage in it. We have to point out when an “edgy” cartoon is just a crappy Islamophobic jab. We shouldn’t pretend that every magazine cover with a picture of Mohammed is a second coming of The Satanic Verses. Making those distinctions isn’t going to placate the sorts of militants who are already apt to tote a machine gun into a magazine office. But it is a way to show good faith to the rest of a marginalized community, to show that free speech isn’t just about mocking their religion.

http://www.slate.com/articles/news_...cal_magazine_is_heroic_it_is_also_racist.html

Note he mentions how obviously racist they were. I don't think he's alone in thinking that. Or about some of their other drawings.

Washington Post, New York Times, CNN, The Associated Press all refused to reprint said cartoons, despite a massacre occurring in response to them. From the first two (in the same order):

the paper doesn’t publish material “that is pointedly, deliberately, or needlessly offensive to members of religious groups.”

“We have a standard that is long held and that serves us well: that there is a line between gratuitous insult and satire. Most of these are gratuitous insult.”

HOLY SHIT ...

The wife of one of the supermarket hostages accuses BFMTV (french most popular news channel) of giving too much information during the siege.

"(...) You made a BIG BIG mistake BFMTV because you were live with the people who were hiding in the cold-storage chamber. They told you there were 6 of them and a baby and 2 minutes later you leaked that information on your channel, and the terrorist was watching your channel ! Luckily he didn't notice the banner at the bottom or my husband and the other 5 people would have been killed by him. He was persuaded that no one was hiding down there. And you leaked that 5 people and a baby were there ! "

Omg ...

I don't know what to say ...

She has a point.

CNN just got this. Apparently sleeper cells in France have been activated in the last 24hrs. I don't know if that means attacks are imminent or not. But not exactly positive news going into one of the largest rallies in recent French History.

http://www.cnn.com/2015/01/10/europe/charlie-hebdo-paris-shooting/

What the fuck does sleeper cells activated mean exactly ? Let me read.

cnn said:
(CNN)French law enforcement officers have been told to erase their social media presence and to carry their weapons at all times because terror sleeper cells have been activated over the last 24 hours in the country, a French police source who attended a briefing Saturday told CNN terror analyst Samuel Laurent.

Bwahaha.

This guy is a fraud and a specialist of absolutely nothing. He's been exposed times and times and again very recently.

Hamas condemns the attacks against Charlie Hebdo (Source: RTL)

But strangely they haven't condemned the mindless killings in Vincennes. Probably just a mistake or maybe time difference? Can't imagine any other reason really.

It might be the case that the declaration of Hamas was done before yesterday's sieges. I remember seeing it quite soon after the attack, but I can't say for sure that it was before the sieges.

Edit: not that I expect for them to care about the Jewish victims.

Yes this is huge. And I thought she was pretty calm and composed. I would have lost it in her situation. I hope freaking BFM gets the shitstorm it deserves. Same with the guy who announced on TV there was someone hidden in the printing factory...

Nah, it's from late today. Totally deliberate. And expected. And sad.

That's impossible, I saw the declaration on video on BBC or Euronews. And I didn't watch today the news as I had other things to do. So it was yesterday, I just can't remember if it was early in the morning (so probably from the day before) or in the afternoon.

Edit: I see, they released today in French a press info. Then it's deliberate.

Making fun of a religion is racist ?

The Hooded Utilitarian article linked in the Slate article is shocking : no, not all the editorial staff was WHITE : the corrector, Mustapha Ourad, was Algerian. El Watan has published an article about him, if somebody could be so kind as to send a translation to M. Canfield.
