cheap HDtv

However, the current gen is far from over with several great PS2 stuff coming right along but it is ending soon so I wouldn't want to spend on a component cable that I won't have much use for. Will it even have much of an effect if I switched from composite to component?

Of course it will have much effect, check that article about the PS2 component I posted + screens!

I just checked out the link. Very interesting. Thank you.

So I assume that if I were to hook up the old Xbox and Gamecube to the new TV, I would also need component cables or else the image would look even worse than it looks on my current 21" SDTV? In fact, that's all I need to know, if I were to hook up the PS2, GC or Xbox on composite to the new Samsung HDTV, would it look worse than it does if I were to hook it up by composite to my current SDTV?

Hey guys, I need some help. I'm looking for an economical HDtv within the next couple months, since I'm buying a Wii. I know the Wii doesn't do 720p, but that's really what I'm after. Here's the deal:

- 720p (but I would take that 768 resolution if I had to)
- 16:9
- over 23" if possible
- headphone jack (I play console games with these in my room)
- sub $400 (or not much over)

Is there anything out there that's like this? That Sammy from a couple pages back would be perfect except I really want something with a little larger screen size, since I'll be sitting about 8 to 10 feet away from it.

Also, I'd take a CRT if I had to, but I'm really just looking for the absolute best my little budget will buy. Bulkiness or looks DOES NOT MATTER, just as long as it works as advertised.

I really appreciate whatever help you folks can offer. Thanks.

EDIT: I live in the US, btw. Thanks again.

Thanks for the replies so far, folks. I don't really care about it having a lot of special features or anything like that. In fact, buying a "scratch and dent" or floor model would be perfectly fine with me, as long as I get a warranty of some kind. That's the only reason why I don't want to buy one used tbh.

I'm almost willing to pick up that 19" Samsung and deal with the screen size. Too bad Wii requires you to be five feet away or whatever. I was hoping I wouldn't have to squint. :-(

Any chance that there will be a good 23"+ on sale for Black Friday? Do LCD's usually go on sale for the holidays?

With composite? I think so. Well, you will need component. Really. :)

I'm looking for a ps3 monitor basically, I don't care about tv or movies. BUT (hd noob) shouldn't I WANT to wait for a set that can do 1080P and not just 1080i? I mean P > i right :p
and are there any 'monitors' that will handle 1080p. And does it even matter with a 19 inch screen?

I have this monitor, have my 360 hooked up to it and it is totally sexy time. There is a composite input on the side but you don't need that. Component hookup on the back ftw. X360 looks awesome on it.

I bought mine for around $450 8 months ago and love it. $299 is a steal.

how does it handle the different aspect ratio?

does it stretch the 360 image or does it put two black borders on top and bottom of the screen?

That's a good question, and most people will tell you that it doesn't matter at such a size/distance. Your eyes wont be able to tell much of a difference at that size.

The best I can find.

I just got that 940MW monitor that I posted up earlier.. Perfect for a bedroom and HDTV looks tight on it.. Can't wait untill I play NBA2k7 on it.

--------
I got a Canon Rebel XT camera, if you need screenshots of it let me know.

Yes please. Make sure you take some screenshots of current gen games also :)

I'm thinking of picking this up:

Specs are here: http://www.samsung.com/Products/TV/LCDTV/LNS2651DXXAA.asp?page=Specifications

Can GAF please educate me with regards to how good this TV will be for gaming? I would expect it to last at least three to four years so I would need it to be relatively futureproof.

With regards to this, how would I know whether it can give me 720p or 1080i images? As with most HDTVs, I don't really understand this since a lot of HDTVs' spec sheets don't really state what resolution it is capable of.

I'm get some up in the moring.... I let my cousin borrow my xbox so I can't post any shots of that and I bought the screen before I buy the 360..... So I can post HDTV shots in the morning..

PS... 720p > 1080i... Interface flickering sucks...

I own a Samsung monitor similar to the one being talked about (not widescreen), and I will that the speakers are TERRIBLE. That isn't to say that they are the same speakers, but if you plan on getting it be sure to have speakers to plug in.

Any fixed pixel display (LCD, Plasma etc.) will give you the option of running either. 720p is usually preferred for these kinds of displays.

CRT, be it direct view, or projection, will only display 480i/p and 1080i. Some will resolve a 720p signal, but scale it to 480p in most cases.

It's interlace flickering and it's impossible to notice (with my eyes).

typo.

I can see it specially when I flick through the video modes on the cable box.

^^

What was the point of that? Cable isn't what you should use to guage HD feeds for numerous reasons. Plus the scaler in your cable box is more than likely causing whatever flicker you see.

1) nitpicking about a typo.

2) crying about screenshots what people asked for

3) whining about me posting cable shots.....

I see your intent with your responses, so you need to shut the **** up.

Although it technically doesn't support 720p as you wanted. It gets the job done and is my 'filler' TV until the technology balances out and becomes more affordable. I'm liking it so far although I've only played current gen titles on it.

Quick techie question. Is my HDTV going to need HDMI ports to fully take advantage of the HD-DVD or Blue Ray connections or will there be an alternate connection that will get me the same results..

Thanks, Your Pal

Quickie answer: HDMI (PS3) / VGA (X360) for 1080p video. You'll need HDMI and a new codec supporting receiver for audio. Without it you can still get something good, but it won't "fully take advantage."

I'll post the rest in the real thread...

(EDIT: 1.3 may not be necessary...)

Looks really good Heezzi, how about the speakers? yay or nay

and it bothers you too much the small size (19" right?)

i just got done testing the speakers... I give them a yay... Everything sounds detailed. I listened to music off the laptop on to them and I am noticing detail that I haven't heard before compared to when listening in various cars from Impalas to DTS, CTS... It's still a TV, so the speakers are not going to have as much sub-bass compared to a car.

At first I thought the size was going to be a problem but in practice, the monitor is so clear and detailed that after you start using it not a problem. Destroys my mom's 19" CRT, my laptop monitor, and my NEC monitor... Colors are rich and vivid.

I would really appreciate some more pics, preferentially of 480p and 720p (like GameCube and Xbox 360) sources.

I'll see what I can do. Those shots I posted above though are 720p.

I just took the plunge and ordered that 19'' Sammy. ^^

I'll post pics of PS2 (already have a 32 inch Sammy HDTV, so this will be for the computer, PS2, and Dreamcast :p), etc. when it comes in the mail.

Yeah I'm thinking about picking up that 19" as well for my older systems - DC/PS2/GC, etc. I wonder if it's possible to wallmount the sucker.

I've seen those 19" Samsungs in action at Best Buy and EB Games, and when someone takes the time to adjust the contrast, brightness, and color saturation settings, they look damn niiiiiiiiiiice. You could almost lick the sweat off the players in 2K7.

Staples sells them now too. Screw pix, you can easily see them in action.

Are you using the detault RGB component wires? I find that on my 940mw its not even 720p resolution, I have to use vga. Now that looks amazing on it :D

I've heard many mixed opinions on the Olevia brand, be sure you're equipped with a solid warranty or service plan.

Here is my plan, I am in the same boat (sort of) I can buy a decent(not great) 32" 720P set NOW or wait and save and get an AWESOME 1080P set in the spring, I decided to wait but what to do with my 360 and GEARS, I do NOT want to play that in SD, but staples got me covered they got this great looking OPTIQUEST 19" 8ms BRIGHT monitor for 150 bucks after rebate, that and a little squinting and a VGA 360 cable can get me through the winter than in spring BAM, mega tv, I got a question though, I also have an original XBOX is thier a VGA cable for that?
