Chicago Tribune: Bush Administration cooked up facts about WMDs

Maybe I should make it more clear for those not in the know. There's a leaked, previously top-secret memo from the British government going around the Internet highlighting this controversy. This official memo outlines fixating U.S. intelligence around reasons for war, and British officials are themselves quoted as saying the case for war was thin.

A highly classified British memo, leaked in the midst of Britain's just-concluded election campaign, indicates that President George W. Bush decided to overthrow Iraqi President Saddam Hussein by summer 2002 and was determined to ensure that U.S. intelligence data supported his policy.

The document, which summarizes a July 23, 2002, meeting of British Prime Minister Tony Blair with his top security advisers, reports on a visit to Washington by the head of Britain's MI-6 intelligence service.

"There was a perceptible shift in attitude. Military action was now seen as inevitable," the MI-6 chief said at the meeting, according to the memo. "Bush wanted to remove Saddam through military action, justified by the conjunction of terrorism and WMD," or weapons of mass destruction.

The memo said, "the intelligence and facts were being fixed around the policy."

No weapons of mass destruction have been found in Iraq since the U.S. invasion in March 2003.

The newly disclosed memo, which was first reported by the Sunday Times of London, hasn't been disavowed by the British government. The British Embassy in Washington did not respond to requests for comment.

A former senior U.S. official called it "an absolutely accurate description of what transpired" during the senior British intelligence officer's visit to Washington. He spoke on condition of anonymity.

In July 2002, and well afterward, top Bush administration foreign policy advisers were insisting that "there are no plans to attack Iraq on the president's desk." But the memo quotes British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, a close colleague of then-Secretary of State Colin Powell, as saying that "Bush had made up his mind to take military action." Straw is quoted as having his doubts about the Iraqi threat.

"But the case was thin. Saddam was not threatening his neighbors, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea or Iran," the memo reported he said.

I am glad Bush won (well, not really) but it makes for comical reading here at GAF.

Sure there isn't anything of real significance to talk about.

The more you all post about it, the more you all will get upset.

Enjoy life, like me. :)

I remember reading something in the British press about some memo. The Blair people were busy spinning their way out of it. Is this the same memo?

Yuk it up while you can, because there'll be no laughter when Emperor Bush sends you to the salt mines

This is no longer news and new evidence no longer shocks us :) We now know they made it all up.

How can we try to impeach one president over lying about a blowjob, and not another one for lying about a war?

Because blowjobs in the oval office offend the common decency. The war... well, I mean they're just Arabs. And it is for oil, so what's the big deal?

Because the democratic leadership doesn't have a ball among them.

haha. When I went to the states I stayed with a staunch republican, he was a cool guy but the one thing I remember best was

(on the subject of clinton)

"That man LIED to the country. FLAT OUT LIED"

I would like to hear his comments now......

Because this time the Congress and President share a parenthetical letter next to their name.

It's like the joking in this thread is a form of cognitive dissonance at the powerless of been unable to do anything...

I don't know... this just seems like such a grave crime... and now that the administration has come out and admitted things like this... and people are just... ignoring it... it's mind boggling.

There's a lot of young Americans "enjoying" life overseas at the moment.

If you had a friend who died or was injured as a result of a made-up and unnecessary war, then you'd probably feel upset by this news.

All of this hypocricy spawned from Bush's "I want to go to war, make it happen" commentary we've been hearing for a while now. The people around (and under) him just made it happen. End of story, it's all Bush's fault.

well no one, Its too late now (isn't it ?)

there has to be some type of legal recourse against an administration that fradulantly led this country into war...they may not get jail time, but these guys should atleast be living in disgrace after what they have done.

Bush is unstoppable now. He could come out and say that he whipes his ass with Korean babies and was directly responsible for 9/11 and everyone would be like "...well, as long as you still hate gays and don't lie about bjs!"

Btw- did you guys hear Mrs Bush talking about how she goes to strip clubs and jacking off horses? Upright Christians indeed...

Hopefully historians will record the facts, so future generations will be able to look back at how fucked up things were (are). Kinda like the reasons leading into the Mexican-American war and Vietnam.

The closest thing to that (in my eyes) would have been him losing to Kerry for a 2nd term

:(

my question is who will eventually take the fall for the iraq war deception? and when will it happen?

Well, currently, there's about 400 dead civilians, or what's left of them, in the last 2 weeks alone, taking the fall in Iraq. Pretty much any soldier that's lost his/her life there has taken the fall.

It doesn't matter if we do have a way of recalling him--we need officals who will take the moral stance and will not be led by the nose by polls lobbyist. When the pandering to fundies and corporations stops there might just be a glimmer of hope left for the US.

The very latest leaked memo was in the last week running up to the election.

It basically said that the American position would likely be to invade Iraq in any case... and yes, going by the date of the memo - this is before a case for war was made public by the US. Whoever made the UK memo then goes on to suggest that it would be best to deliver an ultimatum to saddam via the UN (basically the second resolution was in great part a British idea). I'm surprised this didn't make this over to the US sooner, potentially it's far more damning to Bush than it is Tony Blair:

In the memo, Foreign Secretary Jack Straw is quoted as saying US President George Bush had "made up his mind to take military action even if the timing was not yet decided. But the case was thin".

It adds: "Saddam was not threatening his neighbours, and his WMD capability was less than that of Libya, North Korea or Iran.

"We should work up a plan for an ultimatum to Saddam to allow back in the UN weapons inspectors. This would help with the legal justification for the use of force."

Then France announced it would block any ultimatum that would threaten the use of force in the UN. Resolution squashed... perhaps the second resolution proposal was unreasonable to some countries, perhaps it was justified after 11 years of being fucked around. Either way, the rest is gonna be history. Picture what may have happened in some alternate universe though: Iraq doesn't properly comply with the UN/IAEI/etc in the timeframe of the ultimatum, the deposing force is international, UN unity is preserved. It's such a fucking shame... senseless.

Clinton was impeached off the back of a blow job.

Hard to do when Democrats don't even control the use of hall passes in the Senate and House.

What a sad state of affairs. All Democrats can do is bitch and moan because they've been wallllllloped at the polls.

Honestly, if Kerry were president right now, it'd be scandal after scandal. Plus, the poor guy would be facing charges of "not knowing how to run a war properly" on all news network with the recent spat of 400+ dead within the last two weeks.

Let Bush and his cronies hang themselves for all to see. They have NO ONE to blame, now.

Bush on Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin's plight..

"Hahahah.. fucking loser."

:lol I love how us Canucks call Americans idiots for re-electing a lying crook like Bush, while justifying reasons for a tax money-stealing government to stay in power ("duh, at least we know where we stand with them!!"). This whole world is completely fucked up...just amazing how full of shit people on both sides of the border can be. The Brits can be excused for re-electing Blair...it was either stay with him, or the Conservatives who were pro-Iraq war anyway. And at least they laid into him good and proper for being a pimple on Bush's ass.

Oh BTW, fuck Bush and his cronies...to death.

HEY LOOK, THAT LADY RAN AWAY FROM HER WEDDING!

Sad, but true. Come on media, wake the fuck up!

and open your eyes

So, what does it mean? It means that our president and all of his administration are war criminals. It's as simple as that. They lied to the American people, have killed and injured and traumatized thousands of American men and women doing their patriotic duty, killed at least 100,000 Iraqi civilians, destroyed Iraq's infrastructure and poisoned its environment, squandered billions and billions of our tax dollars, made a mockery of American integrity in the world, changed the course of history, tortured Iraqi prisoners, and bound us intractably to an insane situation that they have no idea how to fix because they had no plan, but greed and empire, in the first place.

This stuff should be front page news around the world! The media needs to take a story like this and run with it.

American: "I don't like Kerry, he's got a long face... like a horse. I don't think I'll vote for him"

Leno: "Just because of the face? *smirk*"

A: "Yes."

I hope to god that Atleast 80% of this board voted Kerry. I even tried to get my american friend to vote, but alas she was to lazy. :(

Goddamn it, IMPEACH! You have fucking evidence now. Use it.

Nixon lied about a coverup. Clinton lied about a blowjob. BUSH LIED ABOUT A FUCKING WAR!! Hundreds of thousands of people are dead just because he WANTED a war! I don't care if the republicans are fucking in power, they should fucking be outraged and vote to do it anyways! The news media should be jumping on this and going full blast 24 hours about it.

Why the fuck is some woman running away from her wedding more newsworthy than the fucking corruption of the most powerful country on earth's administration is beyond me.
