Chris Dring: In Europe, Astro Bot has done better than basically every new 3D platform game in the last 10 years (Mario aside).

Lots of very sensitive Sony fans in this thread, I didn't think my post would provoke this kind of reactions... I thought Gaf was very critical of game journalists and their half assed reporting but I guess this bozo is one of the good ones, curious!!
You -

1. Made a clowish post.
2. Got called out on it.
3. Tried to back pedal by saying it's a joke
4. Now you insult everyone.

Just take the L and move on.

Personally I would say GAF shits on Dring more often not.

It specifically said sales.

So don’t think that includes gamepass of ps+ downloads.

Ok.. it was a honest question because this things tend to get blurry by PR.

Anyway it seems his compering sales in the same time span ... it took 1 month to it takes two to reach 1 million... so probably Astro Bot started better ... maybe it will reach the same 15 millon maybe not ... time will tell

Tbf R&C games lately have reduced platforming segments compared to the first games+ A Crack in Time, which also had plenty of platforming

Perhaps, but there is still plenty of platforming in the later games. Nothing as elaborate as Astro Bot, but there dedicated sections that are all platforming.

GAF is still quiet beholden to other people for opinions on games.

Firmly in pockets of influencers/ reviewers etc.

Yes I think he is comparing in same time frame.

Also each copy of ITT includes 2 licenses cause its cannot be played solo. So maybe EA counted it as 2 sales. While Dring counts it as one.

It Takes Two did pretty well. Something like 15 million copies+

Is this doing better than that?

Whatever It Takes Two sales were a month after it released, yeah. 15 million, no, not at this point. I imagine It Takes Two got quite a bump in sales after it won GOTY at the VGAs. It was also not limited to one platform. I'd be shocked if ITT reaches 15 million just on PS5.

Are most of you guys in Europe? I keep seeing this guy on posts every week.

I'd like to know how a game does on a WORLDWIDE basis versus just the UK.

We will have to wait on Sony to give numbers for that. There isn't an tracking company out there that covers worldwide.

It's amazing how hard journos are straining to avoid calling Astrobot a failure.

It's the best selling non-bundled first party Sony 3D platformer where you play as a robot flying on a ship that looks like a PS5 controller!!! Gureto suxessu!!!!
You have no idea how well it sold. So by your logic you're also talking bollocks.

ITT was fucking great.. hope their next game comes out soon ... or they will be like the hollow knights devs who are swimming in pussy and cocaine until their millions runs out and have to resume Silk Song.

Not a ton, but there have been some not named Mario besides the two you mentioned.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land
Psychonauts 2
Yooka Laylee & the Impossible Lair
Crash Bandicoot 4
Ratchet & Clank
Ratchet & Clank A Rift Apart

Probably others I'm forgetting.
I did not try Yooka Laylee or Crash 4. Are they any good? The others were all pretty fun.
This thing sold 10 copies then.
And sadly the only people who played it are posting in this thread. My oldest actually unlocked the last level. Sounded like he was feeling every death it took to do that too.

I enjoyed Psychonauts 2 and both R&C. Great games. Haven't played Yooka or Crash 4 either.

The only people who played Astro Bot are posting in this thread? What?

Why is it "half assed reporting"? He's telling us which games it's selling better than and which it's selling worse than.

Dring has access to sales data for the UK and contental Europe. That's why he's the source for this information.

I'm not in Europe but have done my part and I'm pretty sure my digital copy that I bought 3 days ago hasn't been counted in the tally.

Got it in advance of the Pro next month.

Deserve. Im not big on platformers in general but Astro Bot really hit that nostalgia button. Everytime I finish a level I go back and just walk around the crash site area looking at the 30 year history of playstation.

I still maintain, from what I have seen, I think both Psychonauts 2, It Takes Two are better games than this. No body gets salty about sales of those games.
GAF is still quiet beholden to other people for opinions on games.

Firmly in pockets of influencers/ reviewers etc.
So your opinion on all these games (“from what I have seen”) was not at all influenced by others.

GAF and the NintendoBase Forum are very critical of Dring, especially since he infuriated a lot of Nintendo supporters with this comments about Super Mario Wonder Sales.

Funny thing is that, more than anything, he’s a Nintendo “Fanboy/Supporter”.

I've already said the only official numbers we have show it's a horrible bomb in at least one major market, and the rest of the reporting on sales is this vague "it's the second best selling game in a week where the only new other game was some basketball licence title". Doesn't bode well for little Astro!:!!
Just take the L and move on.
Never. I'll never take the L!!!

Astro success is well deserved but “Mario aside” renders that statement pointless, as the only 3D platformers released in the past ten years besides Mario are remakes/remasters and indies.

If you haven’t played Astro Bot what exactly are you basing your comparison on?
All time classic… do you throw that term around casually like that? I don’t do that.

First … no personality of its own. It’s paying homage to decades old franchises. 10 years from now, kids will ask … da fook is ape escape??!!

Also… game design. You get new mechanics on new levels that are used for 10 - 15 mins. There is no time to learn / master them. So they are kept simple. Instead of polishing a set of mechanics for 5 yrs, devs are making new mechanics every 6 months. And it shows.

I am not saying its a bad game. I have my doubts it’s going to be remembered 2-3 yrs from now. Except for Sony die hards. That doesn’t make it all time classic in my books.

So did you lie when you said you hadn’t played Astro Bot or are you basing this on the opinions of others?

So you haven't played it and you are arguing that the game is not a all time classic. Sorry, but you sound like a karen.

I made my points.

Feel free to debunk them.

Astro Bot uses the original creative universe seen/heard/played in Astro Bot: Rescue Mission which had no character crossovers. The end-of-galaxy, game-themed levels are entirely understandable knowing nothing about the games they’re based on.

Most power-ups are used in multiple levels before and including bosses and some are quicker one-offs like the tweaked monkey climbing from Astro’s Playroom. Variety! Most original, some tweaked from Rescue Mission like the lesser-used shuriken. There’s as much satisfaction from pummelling or spinning sprung boxing frogs with feedback as there is jumping between player-controlled time-frozen fast-moving platforms. Platforming mechanics are polished (spin attack buildup) and changed (ledge grabbing) from Astro’s Playroom which was itself an evolution of the PSVR head butting forward-only, straight-path design of Rescue Mission.

You haven’t played it and don’t know it very well. You’ve invented your own impressions and reduce others to ‘Sony die hards’.

Fair enough.

Will take your word for it.

Am assuming it has mechanical depth and I will learn and git gud at it.

It'd be nice if Sony actually released some numbers, but it seems like they don't care to brag unless a game does 10 million in 3 days or something.
They don’t want to show investors that the players do not like the games that provide investors with maximum ROI.
