Chuck Rewatch Day!

Anyone else going to check out Chuck vs Santa Claus?

rmspav.jpg

Already watched it a few weeks back, so I will count myself out.

Just finished up my rewatch.

- Emmett & Big Mike in cahoots about robbing X-mas shoppers blind before Emmett makes his power play in late S2.
- Sarah's pissy because it's X-mas. "I don't do Christmas." Forgot how pretty she was in the orange orange getup.
2e5utxf.gif

- Morgan in the elf costume! "Do I not look like an adult to you?"
- Nice turn with them gambling on a chase scene on tv that ends up crashing into the front of the Buy More
- So many good gifs in this one including the Awesome high five. :D
2u3ukww.gif

- Interesting to see the shift in Awesome from a daredevil who always wants to take risks into who he is now (somewhat overwhelmed by the spy game)
- Funny how the commercials on my dvr copy of this from 2008 are exactly the same as the ones airing right now (Zales diamonds and people gifting each other Lexus cars)
- Very slapstick start to it with the bumbling criminal who does actually do some smart stuff early on (locking down security) if you're looking for it.
- Mauser shows up. Does Rooker ever play a good guy?
- Chuck stays like a hero when Casey and Sarah want to extract him
- Casey's toe gets shot off!
- Sarah lying through her teeth for a lot of this "I'm just scared. I've never been this close to a gun."
- Everyone gets to call their loved ones. Nice scene with a brief snippet for all the main characters. Chuck calls Sarah.
- Anna is still dissing Morgan because he won't move in with her.
- Chuck busts out the charm bracelet. "This is something you should give to a real girlfriend." "I know." Flawless victory!
- Mauser comes in exchange for two hostages, and Ned wants to let Sarah and Casey out. Clever move by Fulcrum here.
- Sarah leaves with the "I'll never let anyone hurt you" line. Foreshadowing!
- Chuck flashes on Mauser's watch and shit just got real.
- Mauser figures it out and Chuck admits to being the Intersect
- Ned's roundhouse kick that levels Lester is so so good. :lol
jk9kwj.gif

- Lester sneaking a peek at Ellie and Anna cleavage. Nice.
- Sarah tells Chuck to run, but he stays to see her take out Mauser. One to the head. Brutal.
- Morgan's busted up because Lester grabs Anna and kisses her
- Nice pause from Strahovski to recollect herself at the end before she runs over to Chuck and lies to his face about Mauser.
- Ends with Morgan and Chuck talking about their women.
- Schwartz, Fedak, and Rosenbaum wrote this one.

Great episode. One of my favorites. Plenty of humor and drama up front before shit gets real at the end. My only complaint might be that there wasn't much Casey, but he does get a couple funny lies in.

"Yikes, going to be a cold Christmas at the Bartowskis."

The "No!" gets me every time. :lol

A few new items today:
- Chuck versus the Podcast featuring all manner of call ins and guest stars
- Strahovski getting a shoutout on this list of "10 Underrated TV Performances of 2010"
Yvonne Strahovski as Sarah Walker on Chuck (NBC) -- Sarah Walker is one of the toughest characters on TV and not just because she can kick your ass. She has to be one of the most deceptively difficult characters to play. Just think about all the things that Sarah Walker has to be: Strong and powerful enough that you believe the petite blonde could fight a much bigger enemy; alluring and seductive enough to attract a target; guarded and distant in her emotions as a spy, but soft and open enough that you believe she could fall for a geeky guy like Chuck; vulnerable and broken enough underneath that tough exterior that you believe she really just aches for a normal life with Chuck. And Strahovski pulls it all off with ease. Watch “Chuck Versus Phase Three” if you don’t believe me.

Been saying it for awhile: if they want to increase viewership, put Yvonne on the cover to a mens mag to get attention. Tasteless? Yes. But sometimes very effective.

Esquire or GQ would be good magazines, and they're actually not tasteless compared to the other magazines out there.

Or some basic fucking advertising. I could count their ad budget for Chuck on one hand.

The show is not that new... It will be hard to pull in a significant gain in fanbase just cuz their female lead graces some mens mags now

They did that for the lead up to season three. They really pushed it during the NFL playoffs (the highest rated thing NBC shows) and the ratings started off fairly high to start the season. Unfortunately they then declined every week until falling off a cliff to their current levels. I doubt we will see anything similar from NBC as far as Chuck advertising again.

Just a reminder:
NBC is airing a Chuck mini-marathon tonight with 3 episodes airing back-to-back-to-back. It'll be “Chuck vs. the Anniversary”, “Chuck vs. the Aisle of Terror”, and “Chuck vs. the First Fight” beginning at 8/7c on NBC.

Seeing "vs the First Fight" again makes me think of another possibility of the PSP Intersect used at the end of it. I have been thinking that it (and the Mustang computer) hardwired the intel into Chuck's brain so he just "knows" stuff without flashing. But the way Chuck said "all of my father's research...gone." makes me think that that new intersect might be ALL of Orion's research and intelligence. He basically made Chuck the backup for all the information he ever had. So Chuck could theoretically make Orion stuff now.

Short synopsis for episode 4.11 (first one after the break):
Chuck versus the Balcony

Chuck tries to create a romantic getaway for Sarah while tracking down a nano-chip at a French vineyard; Lester asks Big Mike for love advice.

Wow, I hope
Lester plays a big part in the story - he hasn't done so yet in any episode. Ever. At least not as big as the role Jeff played in Tom Sawyer.

How on earth would
Lester have love problems?

Finally caught up with this season. I've been completely behind till today because I've been busy as hell. I'm loving Morgan's character now, he's not so much a jeffster type, but he's become an important part of the spy team without having to say jokes every 5 minutes. Get to watch this baby live with you guys every week.

Hope for Season 5? :D

Don't want to be a jinx, but based on how poor NBC has been launching new shows and Chuck is one of the top performers (even though that's not saying much)... I'm not seeing how it won't be back for what I presume will be the 5th and final season.

Based on how well the Sing Off has done on Monday, I still wouldn't mind seeing Chuck in a different timeslot where it might perform better.

My guess is that it'll be on the bubble, as always. NBC is under new management, who knows when the Comcast deal will go through, and with all the upheaval it's tough to say how it'll all play out. Hopefully the ratings get an uptick in 2011 because while they're decent by 'NBC standards', they're hardly comforting when it comes to Chuck's renewal chances. Still, as precarious as things seem to me, Chuck is in a better position than I would have predicted at the beginning of the season.

It's pretty much a repeat of last season. Prospects seem terrible in the off-year, then NBC's entire schedule tanks further and when the ratings come/stabilize, Chuck ends up right in the middle of the pack. I'm guessing NBC will have to choose between Law & Order: LA, Parenthood and Chuck. While both are currently doing slightly better than Chuck, they're both moving time slots midseason, and any decision will likely be due to factors besides ratings (production costs, ownership and, in Chuck's case, how badly WB wants to get it in syndication) unless the changes dramatically affect ratings either up or down. I'm not expecting either Harry's Law or The Cape to be a hit, though I'd like the latter to become one so those are out of the equation for me.

As with last year however, the signs are encouraging. I'm adopting cautious optimism on this one.

Btw, NBC is replaying Fear of Death tonight at 8pm.

...and it was every bit as bad the second time around.

Still not funny, Riggle's deadpan completely underplayed the danger Chuck was supposed to be in (to the point that I still say "supposed to be," knowing full well where the story goes), similarly wasted the guest appearance from Summer Glau with a Firefly non-reference reference.

Honestly, in hindsight, this episode was even worse on repeat because everything that Riggle said & did had NOTHING TO DO with Chuck actually getting the Intersect back!

Short synopsis for episode 4.12:
Chuck versus the Gobbler

Chuck worries about Sarah when she tries to help Mary Bartowski (Linda Hamilton) take down Volkoff (Timothy Dalton); Awesome and Ellie struggle to choose a baby name.

Spoilers from Ausiello.

Ausiello: Works for me.
Mark your calendars for Jan. 17. That’s the date Jeffster makes its triumphant return. But that’s old news. Here’s some new news: They’ll be performing a cover of Whitesnake’s “Is This Love.” In other Chuck news, Lou Diamond Phillips has been cast as the V.O.W. (Villain of The Week) in 4.15, “Chuck vs. The Cat Squad.”
As always, please use spoiler tags if you want to discuss.
