Monster Hunter: Wilds enjoyed a great launch in the US market. Launch week dollar sales were the largest for a title since the debut of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 last Oct. It ranked 1st in weekly $ sales across PC, PS5 and XBS. PC was the lead platform. Source: Circana Retail Tracking Service

Shocking. Exactly what I said last week, Monster Hunter stopped being a primarily PS game the minute Worlds launched on PC.

It's both the worst version and the best version. I've had literally zero issues on PC, it runs betters and looks better than the Pro version for me.

I'm glad selling well, I might be one of the few in GAF who highly enjoying this game and I'm playing it on my base PS5.

I have no clue how PC was the lead platform for this.... That game is running so badly on PC, I see no reason for someone to buy that version, like zero.

Until Capcom gets a dedicated team in there to work out those issues, a lot of their PC versions will continue to be hit or miss.

RE games before DD2 were great on PC. DD sucked and this one is even worse. Still on good enough PC it's better than console version.

I'm playing RE4 on PC right now (replay) and it's amazing, 120fps on max settings.

Ironically , the pc port is the worst version at least for most of the mid range pc , and has the most drm as well.

They probably learn the lesson this time keklol , imagine the Japanese player bought the game on their low ,mid range ooooffff and realise the "performance "

Most people who bought this probably didn't know about issues. Next MH game won't have as good sales on PC for sure.
 
I think a lot of people were willing to tolerate bad performance given the gameplay is good.
Personally in today's climate of companies shipping half finished games I NEVER pre-order and ALWAYS wait for reviews. I imagine people who pre-order have OCD about money sitting in their bank accounts or something, especially for digital copies...like wtf guys
I will pick up Wilds once they've demonstrated an effort to fix up the performance and added a bunch more content, especially difficulty and pinnacle monsters or something.
It is sad that the PC base is the greatest in this case but they released something that has frame gen as a requirement to hit 60 FPS in some cases...yikes
 
Is not shocking when time and time Capcom had said that PC is their main platform.

It would be a really bad idea to make another MH timed exclusive to a Nintendo console.

Gonna be US+China. Those two markets alone will probably tip the scales notably in PC's favor even assuming the rest of the world leans more towards consoles. I'm sure it's much stronger on PS5 in Japan, but enough to offset China and the US? I wouldn't bet on that. The first week at least. It still has tons of negative reviews. This can't be good for its longevity.

PS5 has a massive advantage in Japan. Closing that gap would take tremendous numbers and we don't even have the splits for the US...

PC sales are clearly slowing as MHW takes a seat to Split Fiction and both are behind CS2 right now globally. The US is not going to be the determining factor for whether or not this sells better on one platform or another. Probably more than half of the sales for this game are going to come from Japan.

Then you don't understand the worldwide gaming landscape. The rest of the world is more PC centric than the US, not less.

This hasn't been true in years. The PC platform is way bigger in Japan.

Japan sold 5.5 million PS5's. There were that many PC ONLY gamers 5 years ago, that means there was as many PC ONLY gamers in Japan, five years ago, as people who own a PS5. Almost 20 million people play PC games in Japan, and PC growth has been DOUBLE console growth in Japan for the last decade. There is no PS5 "advantage" in Japan.

PC as a lead platform was not in my radar for this game… Things are changing quite fast. With what happened in Japan in the first week, now i think that PC is the lead platform worldwide… Kinda crazy.

Yup it's changing so fast that MH can completely ignore Nintendo and sell record numbers on Playstation and PC

We saw a peak of 1.387M on Steam on the first or second day. Capcom then reported 8M sales. This means at one point, at least 17% of users were on PC all at once. Probably much higher since they hadn't yet sold 8M when this happened.

I think you're massively overestimating Japan. How many PS5s sold there? 7M? This game will move units, but Japan would need to do some insane numbers to offset China and the US, both of which are much larger markets with several times their population.

Half the sales coming from Japan is pretty much impossible unless you think the attach rate is something unprecedented like over 70%.

You're underestimating the digital PS5 sales in Japan as well as the PC Japan sales while probably overestimating Chinese sales.

Maybe half was a bit hyperbolic, but my point stands that without knowing the splits, simply assuming that because PC was the lead system in the US that that determines anything on its own is a stretch.

China is bigger than Japan for MH Wilds. The time has changed where the most popular country for MH is no longer Japan but China unless it's portable edition like Rise where Switch version alone has cleared 5m.

2020 leak numbers with PC staggered release.

PC USA: 1.616mil
PC EU: 1.570 mil
PC Asia: 2.531 mil
Sony USA: 2.392 mil
Sony EU: 1.702 mil
Sony Asia: 1.414 mil

With day 1 release on PC
USA PC version has sold more than the PlayStation version, and it's going to be much worse in other regions for PS5.

It's not just that PC was the lead system in the US. It's that at one point, over 17% of the players were on PC at the same time. Unless you think 90% of the user base was logged in at once, PC would be the leading platform by a comfortable margin. Besides, it's not like there are no Japanese PC players either.

The one thing that could offset this are the garbage user reviews that will surely hurt in the long run if they continue.

Edit: 1.30M on day and 1.38M on day 2. Even assuming they sold 5M on the first day, you'd be looking at over a quarter of all the players being on PC at once. Yeah, Japan with its 7M PS5s isn't beating that. In the long run, if the shitfest on PC continues, then I could see PS pulling away. First week though? Data suggests PC is ahead.

No one is underestimating Japan, you're just massively overestimating them. Monster Hunter Worlds was literally the best selling game in Japan the year it was released and it still only accounted for 25% of total sales. MHRise sold 75% of it's copies before the PS version even released. The splits don't even matter. If every single PS5 owner from Japan bought this game, it still wouldn't account for 50% of the sales.

Things have changed for Capcom, Rise was a 9 months timed exclusive on Switch, things would have been different if the game was launched Multiplatform day 1, just like Wilds.

KADOKAWA ASCII also says there were 16 million PC game users in Japan in 2021 – among a total gamer base of 55.4 million people (Japan's population was around 126 million last year).

Here, too, a comparison provides more context: in 2015, the same company identified just 11 million PC gamers in Japan – so the number grew a whopping 45% by 2021 (the total gamer population back then was just 45 million – so it grew by just 22%).

Going back to 2021, KADOKAWA ASCII says of those 16 million PC gamers in Japan, 4.5 million played exclusively on that platform (while the others also played on consoles or smartphones).

That number is up an incredible 100% up from 2.2 million PC-exclusive Japanese gamers in 2015.

Pc gaming grew at double the rate of gamers in general, which includes PS gamers. This was 2021, PC gaming grew another 43% in Japan compared to console sales growth of 3% in 2022. PC gaming revenue TRIPLED in Japan between 2019 and 2023, outpacing everything else in the country. Unless you think that a market that has consistently grown, faster than any other gaming market, for the past decade suddenly declined in 2024, yes, the PC is gaining ground and taking market share from other gaming platforms in Japan.

No. It debuted in PS2 with some games, later it got its sales peak in PSP selling more there than it did later on Wii or 3DS. Then it went back to PS home consoles with Worlds, exploding in sales and selling more than what it did later with Rise on Switch. Started in PS, had more games in PS and sold more in PS.

There were a few titles only on Nintendo DS/3DS for years before World. I'm not talking about sales

I've tried researching it and a lot of people are badmouthing the pc version but all in all when you get into it, the only problem there is is people running the texture and shadow settings too high for the amount of vram they have. That's it. After lowering it, game runs good.
I am still not convinced this is such a legendary bad pc port or are stubborn mid range pc gamers refusing to lower a setting or two.
