I got the ps5 with disc on release window and the only discs ive put on the thing are the ps4 versions of god of war ragnarok and ps4 cyberpunk...2 discs in what, 3 years? and both are from last gen. not a single ps5 discs has been on my ps5...I got the disc cause of my ps4 library but i dont even play that.

Okay. Well at least make the disc drive cheaper and easier to find and don't phase out physical option. For me, I always go with physical because I really own the game, collect and appreciate the game in physical copy.

Have a look at another quote (one above), seems like publishers are more and more moving to digital only releases. It makes sens for them as they don't like the fact that gamers can resell their games - it's all about the money.

I myself buy physicals version of the game only if I am not sure I will like but still would like to test it myself. If don't like it I just re-sell it. I would say that 9/10 games I buy are digital nowadays.

I'm surprised that more haven't gone digital only (on Xbox)...my point was referring to games like Sonic, TMNT, MGS, Harry Potter and other 3rd party liscenced IP that release physically on Xbox. Those games almost always sell like 10% or less of the total physical sales so I have to wonder if they even bother with physical because they have some kind of contractual obligation.

I'll give you collect & appreciate, but "own" is a tough stretch. Yes, you own a disc with bytes of game code that they cannot take away from you - but "owning" no longer means playable forever. To use a recent example, "owned" copies of Concord discs are completely useless. As will be any other game that requires an online infrastructure or updates to play/install.

True physical died in the 7th gen imo (some even say 6th) when games were generally complete on disc and didn't require an online console.

Where do you guys get this idea that the option to by digital games will disappear? That's not the case with music or movies.


Selling games at full RRP will always be a great idea to the pubs and devs.so that option is not going anywhere.


The last physical games I bought were back in the x360 era and even then I was starting to choose digital more and more. I pretty much stopped buying CDs when iTunes became a thing. And I don't think ive ever owned a DVD movie…. I've always seen movies and 'one and done' things so I've always been happy to rent movies or go cinemas.


That's said…. I'll always fondly remember my bio shock limited edition with the statue that I still have to this day….. mass effect 1…. In the tin box…. Gears in a tin box… halo in a tin box. But then I just sort of…. I wasn't bothered about that sort of thing no more. What I like is seeing my whole game library on my screen and just tapping the A button to start.

Thing about physical is the media format is bound to the hardware of that generation. Switch 2 ain't going to play some NES cartridges and PS5 ain't going to accept PS1 discs.

That's one problem physical folks pretend to not exist

I've only put 3 game discs in my OG disc PS5: Cyberpunk, DriveClub and Sonic Frontiers. The only discs that have been in my slim PS5 are some old Bollywood DVD movies I found in a box. I'm also part of the problem.

Maaaan…. I'm still waiting to hear if switch 2 has BC for switch one games.


You know?…. Nintendo is one company I would love to go all in with Digital with. But I don't trust them to carry any previous games over to their next platform

I was tempted to buy a wii back in the day for virtual console but it turns out you would have to buy them all again for a switch.


I'll never get the obsession with physical. But maybe I just live the convenience of digital downloads too much. Only console I would really care about to get retro games for is the Saturn. And I haven't owned one of those since the year 2000. As long as I have the game that's all I care about. People put too much stock into having a disc and a manual. And as you rightly pointed out…. None of it works on the next hardware unless you intend to keep a room full of old consoles. I love games but not THAT much. I won't be dedicating a room to consoles and walls full of games. Don't have the space for it anyway. Just give me everything on a hard drive and I'm good to go and make it work on my current console and I'm good to go.

Charts like this are misleading. Is this in units or dollars? They need to only show games that also have physical copies that were actively for sale. And even then the crazy digital sales of 10 year old games for $3 can throw things off if it's by copies sold.

I just wish we could get the numbers for games with physical releases in their first year and see that split. That would be way more informative. This feels like it's just pushing a narrative. And maybe it isn't, but I'd like transparency.

Agreed. It's nice to finally have a new PlayStation with no demand that you can easily buy whenever you want. Thanks Sony!
