Quite simply you don't have a single faction you stick to "from start to end".
The game shipped with 30 factions, but just ten are eligible as starting ones. Then at a certain point during the game you "progress to a new era" and the game asks you to pick what Civilization you'll be among a selection other 10 options, then in the late game same thing again; you'll progress to the modern era and you'll pick one of the ten "modern factions" currently available.

Maybe it will prove to be an acquired taste, but I personally hate the concept.
That sounds like actual garbage.

That does not sound good at all. I was originally going to wait for a deep sale on the complete edition, but now I just don't have any interest at all

This is such a bizarre choice that flies in the face of the concept of the series.

I looked up the factions to see what you were talking about. So you can start the game as Roman, turn Hawaiian and finally wind up as Japanese? Or some variation of that? Oh, and the leader is separate as well so that dynasty was led by Benjamin Franklin?

Holy shit who thought that was a good idea? That sounds like something you'd release as a silly mode DLC; not the entire main game.

Good. I like the game. Does it deserve those reviews as a whole? Not really. But firaxis/2k do.

Giving a good review and mentioning the negatives on the side is meaningless. People dont read reviews for the most part, they just see that tag. If they deliver games like this and reviews end up being positive, that's all that matters to them and they'll keep doing it. The negative reviews just might have a little impact in how they do things in the future.
lol this is the typical game now. what impacts what they do in the future is whether or not your wallet opens up.

FFS, the game is at 43% user score on Steam.
For a while, I was considering pre-ordering this game. Glad and didn't and dodge a bullet.
Good call.

Never preorder a game unless you exactly know what youre getting.

Only time I've ever preordered was probably 10 years ago when stores would do buy 2 get 1 free deals during E3. So I'd get COD, NHL and another game I knew what they were going to be without surprises.

The second stores stopped doing those promotions, I stopped preordering.

So judging by this thread, most of you have never played Civ or never been part of their launches. This is how they always go, ALWAYS. Civ 6 was a steaming pile at launch. So was Civ 5.

I've played the game now sense it unlocked yesterday, all night and most of this morning. The game has good foundations, its fun, its just way unfinished. The UI is trash, and the balance is way off,

I can already tell with confidence, just like all other civs, this game will be loved.. in a few years, after an expansion pack or 2. And when Civ 8 comes around, everyone will say how great Civ 7 is and how horrible Civ 8 is at launch. Its the way the world works.

It is pretty clear to me that this game is being designed around selling many mini DLCs, that is why they made the leaders separate from the civilizations. They can pump out unlimited leaders because over time people will max out the existing ones with the rogue-like mechanic, and it is way easier to make a leader than design a whole new civ. The problem with this game is the problem with most other western games right now, they care about monetization first and second, with gameplay a distant third place.
It’s almost certain that they were or maybe still even are planning some sort of battle pass mechanics with the way the leader progression is set up and how they have decoupled them from the civs themselves.

Regardless off all other changes the insane thing to me about VII is the game is called Civilization, and the now civilizations have been relegated to essentially like perks you choose for your leader.

This sounds great in concept but executed horrifically.

A Civ game in this shape? Jesus. Damn you devs!

How is that a DEI thing?
Everything negative is down to DEI, right? What a retarded way of thinking.

Council tax is going up in April, fucking DEI doing it's thing...
I guess it's an attempt to be funny? I'm just over seeing "DEI" this, or "Woke" that. Call the projects out for what they actually did wrong which is release a broken game. We've had WAY too many busted AAA games over the last few years, but they just keep coming. :pie_persevering:

Any video of this lol
Please for the love of god someone deliver, lmao.

I added context to your personal opinion, it being that the majority of people liked 6 a lot. They’ll eventually fix the UI and everyone will move on.

I got Civ VI on launch and happily had Queen Victoria lead the British Empire to glory. This has no British leaders at all- nor the Empire unless you pay £25 - but does have Harriet Tubman ffs

It’s a big ‘fuck you’ to those of us who paid £150 for Civ V/VI on various platforms and were looking forward to this, clearly by design as well.

Civ 6 was pretty mid not matter how much it sold unfortunately. Even after multiple expansions. Like I said, it's fine but nothing special.

Sounds like Civ 7s problems are bigger than just UI issues. People have major issues with the core design. This seems like a different beast compared to complaints about districts in Civ 6 years ago.

Englishmen not happy while we have Isabella busted? Best Civ EVER.

Imagine not having finished basic UI on a game in 2025 and then selling the game for extra money so people can play early. Gamers are just as complicit; if you want to buy unfinished slop and then get milked for more money down the road, well, have at it. Just don't open your mouth and complain about anything, since you are part of the very big problem.

The first Civ that I didn't bought at launch. Tired of buying a wip game without most of the leaders and features.
Will wait for a sale for the complete edition in a year and a half.
This was my first reaction to when I saw Civ 7 was announced: "Oh, I guess it's safe to buy Civ 6 now", and bought a key online for complete version on PC for like under $10.

These companies are really setting a bad precedent with their new releases by releasing shitty versions at launch where they're likely to make the most money. People do learn eventually.

Realistically, Civ 6 is in a much, much better state after the two expansion / patches / DLC than on launch. It felt very barebones back then.

I guess it will be a similar trajectory with Civ 7, although it's disappointing this looks more like Early Access than a full launch.

Yeah, this is one where I am going to get this in a year or two with some DLCs on sale.

The decoupling of leaders and civilizations plus that stupid age transition isn’t my cup of tea.

It’s not even the DLC because I do wind up paying Paradox tax (on sale of course). The game just doesn’t look interesting to me at this juncture.

I'm probably going to skip this one altogether. Getting tired of the never-ending flow of DLC. I've got a little over 100 hours in Civ 6 and have been playing it here and there since launch. It is a 9 year old game now. I've really lost interest in the series.
