Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose! The FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS NeoGAF (Re)watch Thread

she seems to be joking about the affair thing, I think. "I haven't talked to the writers" is a big point.

Thank god, I would be soo pissed if true!

I can't tell when exactly she started to joke around. I'll just take that she doesn't know much more than we do about the new seasons yet.

I think one of the most tricky thing would be how they keep Riggins in the show, surely he can't quit college now after his brother's speech in S3.

On a related note,

It's sad how little she knows about the Emmys.

She and Kyle should've been there/nominated the last two years >_<.

FUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!

Question: As a huge Friday Night Lights fan, I absolutely loved your interview with Connie Britton. Is there any more news on who will be coming back next season? I live in Austin, and need to know who to be looking out for around town come September. --Amanda

Ausiello: In addition to Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton, full-time returnees include Jesse Plemons, Taylor Kitsch, Aimee Teegarden, and Jeremy Sumpter. Adrianne Palicki, Minka Kelly, and Zach Gilford will likely be back for short-term farewell arcs.

Fuck you Ausiello! You better be wrong!!!!!

I can't lose Matt!

Edit: WTF? He better be wrong. He's been wrong before. How can you bring back Julie but not Matt? Matt has a long way to go before his stuff is fixed. Ahhhhh fuck.

Spotless Mind said:
That doesn't make much sense to me, especially when they're keeping Taylor Kitsch full time. I really, really hope he's wrong.

.

Seriously, Matt has more left than anyone! What the fuck would Riggins do? I'll point to the "likely" in his statement, and that he could be mistaken. Matt should be there till the end.

I would still love it and watch, of course, but the show would take a big blow for me if Matt leaves.

Taylor Kitsch full time is kind of crazy now that he's making movies...and his character already had a great enough good bye.

I'm closing my eyes and clogging my ears so that I avoid spoilers, but I just wanted to jump in to say that the first season easily holds up as one of the greatest seasons of any television show I've ever seen. My wife and I experienced a broader range of emotions than we thought was possible from a TV show, leading up to and including the incredible finale.

We loved it so much that we're going to watch Season 2 and 3 over the summer to get caught up for the new season whenever it airs on NBC.

Seriously.

Riggins had a perfect ending. Matt still has a ton of shit to work through. Not to mention that he and Julie seem to be together for the long haul (series wise). Considering they only have two seasons left, why drop him now? On top of that, all the episodes will be filmed consequetively. Ausiello better be mistaken.

I would have to fuck someone up if he's leaving.

TV guide's Matt Mitovich interview with Connie also mentions Matt leaving along with Tyra and Lyla:

TVGuide.com: Maybe. Will Season 4 serve up anything similar for Matt (Zach Gilford), Tyra (Adrianne Palicki) or Lyla (Minka Kelly), all of whom could be heading off to college?
Britton: The writers just now are concocting their story ideas, but I would think they do a little arc for all those characters — or at least the ones they can. All these actors are going off and doing awesome movies and stuff. We are the farm team for Hollywood, with our actors, our writers, our director.... It's crazy.

=/

-_-

Well, Connie Briton did say she has no idea what the writers are planning in the EW interview. Unless she knows that Zach (Matt) is leaving, she doesn't really know whats happening with Matt.

Yes I will keep this line of reasoning.

I like Riggins and all, but the show just wouldn't be the same without Matt. Riggins i can do without and i think it's time for him to leave. There is so much more they can do with Matt story-wise that resonates for me. I hope this isn't a case of them keeping Kitsch on just because of his higher profile at the moment.

Bolded the whole thing for truth, justice, and the American way.

>.<

The show should end with Matt leaving the devil town for sf and that should be the giant arc that wraps the show. I guess they can say that Tim's college is not as far away as Lyla's or Tyra's, but Tim needs to go to college, him hanging about would feel like a repeat of s3 or of Smash again.

So I guessed that this was the thread to say it, but I saw Connie Britton (or Constance Womack) at Dartmouth College reunion. At first I thought she looked really familiar, and then I was like holy crap!! it's the wife from FNL!! I had no clue she was a fellow Dartmouth grad until then.

Did you talk to her?

Did she mention if Matt will be in S4/5?

:)

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Fans have been clamoring to find out the fate of the Dillon Texas Panthers on DirecTV and NBC’s “Friday Night Lights” and Access Hollywood has the exclusive news on who will be returning to the field and whose time under the big lights is fading.

As previously announced, the Peter Berg-created series is returning for two more seasons, with an initial run on DirecTV followed by broadcast on NBC. A source close to the show told AccessHollywood.com that series stars Connie Britton and Kyle Chandler (principal Tami Taylor and coach Eric Taylor) and the actress who plays their daughter, Aimee Teegarden (Julie Taylor), will be returning as series regulars.

Also, Taylor Kitsch (Tim Riggins), who wowed audiences as Gambit in this summer’s “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” and Jesse Plemons (Landry Clarke) will also return as regulars.

Minka Kelly’s (Lyla Garrity) future in Dillion is still uncertain, but our source says she’ll most likely return for one or two episodes in the coming season.

Adrianne Palicki (Tyra Collette) appears to be least likely to be spotted on the football drama, as her upcoming shooting schedule for the “Red Dawn” reboot could conflict with the new season. But fans should likely still get a little taste of Tyra in possibly one to two episodes.

And in total touchdown casting news for die hard “Lights” fans, Zach Gilford (Matt Saracen) will return for five to seven episodes of the new season, where the guy who is best known for taking care of everyone else in his life is said to have a major new storyline that involves him taking charge and taking care of himself.

“Friday Night Lights” is slated for two more 13-episode runs during the 2010-11 TV season.

WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING TO HAPPEN WITH MATT AND JULIE? HOW CAN HE BE LEAVING?

:(

Hopefully someone along the line is mistaken.

:(

I'll (or you Cos) bump this in the morning for east coast GAF. LETTERS WILL BE WRITTEN. WE WILL MAKE OUR VOICE HEARD.

Oh my god. I'm getting sicker by the minute.

Who could the audience possibly allow Jules to date after Matt?

What the hell is Riggins gonna do next season? Not bang chicks? Hardly.

I think you see were I'm going with this.

FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK!

“Friday Night Lights” is slated for two more 13-episode runs during the 2010-11 TV season.

So it's not airing until next year?

Why bother splitting it into two seasons if they'll just be airing back-to-back?

They were headed in the direction of Matt leaving during season 3 anyway. While i definitely will miss the character, i think it will be for the best from a story perspective, because it would seem like they're contriving reasons for him to stick around. I didn't like the idea of Matt staying in Dillon when it popped up in the finale, to be honest. Just think of it as 7 more episodes of Matt that we are lucky to even get. :P

I kinda agree.

Though it's terribly sad to see the show increasingly lose characters that are so central to why I enjoy it. :(

Just have to wait and see how this is all handled before I make up how I feel about it.

He shoulda left in the S3 finale, so w/e.

Nonononononononononononononononono.

Did you guys check out the S3 deleted scenes? In them Matt goes over why he's staying to Julie (and you get more substantial goodbyes from just about everyone, I guess they left them out more or less to spread those goodbyes into S4). He basically says that if he leaves, when he comes home every once in a while, eventually his grandmother won't be able to remember who he is (because of her problems). She's the only person who never left him, so he couldn't bear to have her not know him.

That scene definitely cleared up my issues with Matt's last minute decision to stay.

SpeedingUptoStop said:
I'm more pissed about Riggins staying.

Or he could help coach Eric with the East Dillon High team...

Totally agree with Speeding. Riggins had the perfect ending. The could only create more conflict for him. Conflict that isn't needed. Especially now that he'll be away in college (or maybe not anymore).

Riggins staying screams executives telling the writers that Taylor Kitch's high profile makes him increasingly valuable to the show.

One more thing.

I don't really think they ever intended Matt to leave at the end of S3. He would still have the biggest problem of his life right now, his grandmother's worsening condition. Which, as I stated above, is ultimately the reason he stayed. On top of his relationship with Julie. I cant accept her have relations with anyone else :(.

I wonder who they're going to be focusing on with this many characters leaving. Obviously, coach and coach's wife, but there are a ton of the students leaving plus they're switching over to the East side.

Ugh. They have destroyed Riggins and Matt/Julie.

Here comes the return of early S2 Julie.

There's trouble brewing in Dillon, Texas, and it's not just caused by the literal split of the town. There are other splits coming, including a few of our favorite TV couples, who have some rocky roads ahead.

We sat down with Friday Night Lights' Connie Britton prior to her Conversations session at the SAG Foundation, and she dished what's in store for the citizens of Dillon in season four, which kicks off production on Sept. 2.

When we left the Taylors at the end of season three, Coach (Kyle Chandler) was banished to the run-down West Dillon High School, while Tami remained principal of the Panthers. Could this split actually revive their marriage? "Wait, there's nothing wrong with the marriage," joked Connie. "Hello! The marriage doesn't need reviving. How dare you?"
Actually the impact of the separate schools may "add a new dimension" to their relationship, Connie said. "It's very hard to even grasp what it means—this whole new school that needs all this help that Coach is going to be going to, with redistricting and all that. I think it's going to be more [about] us trying to figure out what our new roles are in these places than it's going to be us at odds with each other. Maybe we'll find a way to come together and help each other with our competitive schools."

While the Taylors are adding a new spark to their marriage, little Julie (Aimee Teegarden) may be in for more trouble this season. "It'll be much more interesting if she's not a good girl, don't you think? At the end of the day, I'm her mom, [and] I want her to be awesome," Connie said. "Maybe she can have one more spell, and then I want her to pull it all together and get into a great school and live an awesome life."
So what does this mean for Matt Saracen (Zach Gilford) and Julie? Connie told us, "At the end of last season it wasn't like he was going to be gone." However, Zach won't be in many episodes this season, so it doesn't seem like they could last. "Exactly!" exclaimed Connie. "I don't know how that's going to sort itself out."

NBC
Speaking of doomed relationships, Taylor Kitsch recently told us he's coming back for season four, but Minka Kelly is only back for a few episodes, which Connie teased is not good news for Lyla and Riggins fans: "Riggins is going to have to move on. The reality of the situation is he's in Dillon; he's never going to leave Dillon probably, and she is. She has a whole future, and I think it would be really interesting to see what that does to him. Maybe she'll come back and do some episodes, and we'll see where she's gone off to and see the difference between the girl who gets out and the guy who doesn't. Those old high school relationships where you think [you're] going to be forever together and then you've got your whole life ahead of you and everything changes. "

Ugh, this certainly tempers my expectations a bit. The only wish I have right now (for the characters) is that Julie and Matt end up together at the end and that Riggins finally succeeds. Billy's awesome speech last season seems like a waste now :(.

Lets see what happens... maybe we should start writing to Andrew Stanton and get him to start John Carter early so that Riggins has to be written out.

Sounds like a lot of speculation on the part of Connie Britton and E!.

Yes, thankfully. She did mention that she doesn't know what the writers are planning last week in that EW video.

Question: Like most Friday Night Lights fans, I was devastated to read in last week's AA that Zach Gilford will not return as a series regular next season. Do you know how long he will return for? --Amanda?
Ausiello: It's looking like five episodes, maybe more. And I'm a little bummed myself.
:(

EW said:
Word on the street -- and by "the street" I mean Michael Ausiello's Smurf-bedecked suite -- is that Friday Night Lights will very likely end in 2011 after airing two more seasons. After breaking this news with Ausiello, star Connie Britton hedged a bit in another recent interview: "You never know -- if it does do really, really well, maybe they would go on for more seasons." Sure, if FNL suddenly becomes a ratings beast in the next year or so, then all involved will no doubt reconsider their options. But Britton added that she's not afraid of the possibility that the series might say goodbye after season 5: "Everybody is really embracing the idea of having two seasons and being able to be really specific with these arcs and know where we're going to end up."
I'm inclined to agree with her. Friday Night Lights has had a fantastic creative run so far, one of the strongest of any network drama in recent memory. I can't wait to get junkie-level, absolutely-can't-miss hooked again when season 4 premieres. But consider how much cast upheaval FNL already saw last season, with so many core characters graduating or otherwise leaving Dillon High. Two seasons from now, I can only assume many of the replacement characters from season 4 will be facing that same crossroads. And while I'd love to see Britton and Kyle Chandler (pictured) mentoring an infinite series of new high-schoolers for years to come, I expect the end of season 5 will make a natural stopping point for the characters we've gotten to know. Besides, I'll count us lucky to have gotten even five full seasons of a show with ratings as (undeservedly) dicey as FNL's.
But what do you think? Will you be happy with five seasons from Friday Night Lights, or do you wish this show could go on forever?

Five seasons is a great ending point. They're probably working out the rest of the arcs right now.

The stuff about Lyla leaving and only coming back for a few episodes actually sounds like something the show could do well. former cheerleader leaving and coming back eventually to see how she's changed from her old high school sweetheart.

Yeah. While Riggins sits around being a garbage man!

I hope not :/.

I also hope Jason and maybe guest star in an episode or two. I wanna see that redhead again!

I'm fine with five total. I'd rather see them end it than have a few seasons of diminished quality because they're out of ideas.

The other option (but more painful :/) is that we just say goodbye to all the original high school cast (we kind of are already, only JD and some of those unnamed players from S3 will be around in S5) and bring in a brand new team. That is assuming they could keep up the same quality of course.
