CNN poll : Donald Trump now competitive in general election

Bwahahaha. This is how you get campaigns to spend BILLIONS of dollars on advertising. ABC, NBC, CBS, FOX, CNN, etc. They all make a SHIT TON of money off elections. Campaigns spend more money when they are close. So making it sound like races are close is how they get to spend more money. Need proof? Look at the last cycle and how they always said Romney was neck and neck. Dude never stood a chance.

I thought it was impossible for a Republican to be competitive in the presidential race because of maths? Gaf told me this!

Hilary is a sinking ship and not the right person to face off against Trump.
LOL

The above is proof of how Trump can lead in a party that doesn't understand electoral math.

There will always be a large minority of potential voters who are blindingly ignorant, and willfully so at times. This entire Trump reality show is just another example of that.

All he has to do is get the most votes to become president right? Why is that such an impossibility for some people? Is he really worse than Bush?

He seems like he would be a fun, new president.

Those dismissing the polls are looking at them from a single dimension. What the polls are showing and the over all media and social spheres is Trumps marketing/PR is indeed grabbing and penetrating more of the public mind share. Thats a key goal right now. Its a big step in getting the mass of people who will vote for someone without many specific reasons or details to vote for you. There a very large group and they helped Obama. This time they will help the Trump.

The Obama coalition was a large group of ethnic minorities, women and the young.

Almost exclusively the people Trump has been pissing off thus far.

He needs to get the most electoral votes, a much more complicated process.

I am sure this is an elaborate conspiracy by democrats troll voting to give the illusion of Trumps popularity in the hope of making him republican candidate, so he'll inevitably be crushed by the democrats thus easily securing four more years... Right?... RIGHT?

I expect the eating crow thread when Donald Trump wins the nomination.

#TRUMP2016

I'll gladly eat crow if he gets the nomination, but I'm telling you all that he won't. Not a chance. $20 paypal says he won't. If anyone's sure he's going to get the nomination, take me up.

It is impossible because of maths. Whoever told you was right. Republicans already have an almost insurmountable math problem when it comes to winning a general, Trump's doubling down on the anti-immigrant stuff and talking about walls makes that exact problem even more of a problem. He won't win the nomination, but even in the absolutely insane event that he does, it's not possible for him to win the general unless the democratic nominee had a meltdown/scandal more severe than any we've seen in modern history. And, no, Hillary using the wrong email address isn't that level of scandal.

Building a Great Wall of the Border sure would be new. Not sure about fun.

ok, now that that's out of my system. I wonder when people stop sleeping on Trump. Republicans I know hate Bush number 3 and think the other's aren't crazy enough. Trump doubling down on the immigrant rapists comment was genious.

See this is why people can comfortably say he is not going to get elected.

Can you imagine what the GOP will do if he doesn't get the nomination and instead runs as an independent. He'd sweep the rug out from under the Republican party.

I still just don't see any path to victory for Trump. How can anyone win in 2016 by alienating women and Hispanic voters? That's just the nature of democracy. The white vote, the white conservative vote, and even the minority Republican vote isn't enough for him to win. And unlike McCain and Romney, he isn't broad enough to get some center-left Democrats, especially not when they have Clinton, Sanders, or Biden to choose.

This is a huge headache for the GOP Establishment because this early front-runner status will mean if they push Trump out, he will definitely feel like he could have surged all the way to November 2016 had they not sabotaged him, and run third party.

Trump is battling for Republican votes on right wing territory. In a general election he will be change strategy and start fighting more for the centre ground. So he'll have a fair amount of low hanging fruit to get meaning he'll likely improve further compared to now.

I'm 100% voting for him for the lulz. Not like anyone else in there is going to make a difference anyways.

Sounds like the Eddie Murphy joke about white people getting drunk and voting for Jesse Jackson as a joke.

I just voted for Jesse Jackson, hehehehe
Next morning - HE FUCKING WON!?

I really hope Hillary gets better at campaigning soon. My goodness.

I think we attributed 2008's loss to Obama to simply Obama being lightning in a bottle, a once in a lifetime campaigner. Perhaps that's true, but perhaps we underestimated Clinton's weaknesses. She once again seems to be dawdling.

Surely a president that gets controlled by 3rd parties (Hillary and everyone else) would be better than a president (Trump) who speaks the truth and says what's on his mind.

Lol. We need a change. We need somebody who speaks their mind and actually does what he says. If you want that as well, vote for Trump.

I strongly dislike both Harper and Cameron, but they're not really comparable to Trump and Abbott. Conservative, yes, but Harper and Cameron are both establishment conservative as opposed to idiocracy.

People in Europe should watch some Trump speeches. Everybody is thinking crazy reality tv guy with bad hair, but if you sit down and listen he is an effective populist politician with excellent public speaking skills. It is not that crazy that he is doing well in the polls compared with the competition. I disagree with his politics, especially the "simple solutions" he envisions for the US with protectionism and anti-immigration policies, but to completely dismiss him or place him in the entertainment section like Huffington Post did is just silly.

Ding ding!

I don't see him getting the nomination. All he's doing now is getting attention on the GOP candidates. I think he'd get slaughtered in a national election too, unless there are enough stupid people in America that would vote for a guy based solely on a person's celebrity status...

Shit...we're fucked...

You could make the case that she was never that capable and is being found out again because her political career is ultimately just riding on the coattails of Bill.

Judging by most gaf threads, we already are so what difference would it.
Most of gaf just hates on the US because it's the in thing, reality is that shit that we do still affects the world greatly. If we elect this fucking clown it wont just be the cool thing to do, it'll be the only thing to do

This is completely unfair. Her New York Senate win was masterful politically.

I'm not the only one feeling like Hilary is more a liability to the Dems than any candidate the republicans can throw out, am I?

While it would be great to have a woman in office, Hillary is just becoming/is toxic. At what point do Dems have to look at her and say "you actually lower our chances of keeping the office, we have to take a different route".

The right to vote is a privilege that many still don't have. It's not a joke.

Trump is an awful human being but he's popular among conservatives because he says bigoted stuff on national television.

Nah. Plenty of 20-something white guys who spend their time on the internet talking to other 20-something white guys feel similarly.

While Trump has a small chance of gaining the Republican nomination, he has no shot at the general election. This poll doesn't really doesn't do much to refute that. The main reason is that his negatives don't lend themselves to attacks against him among Republicans so nobody has been hammering him on them. This doesn't apply during the general election, and Trump's support among leaning voters will crumble. While candidate trends have some importance, people shouldn't pay much heed to hypothetical match up polls this far away from the election.
