Do any of you have any smaller ISP alternatives where you live? I know here in Columbus we have Wide Open West, which was a fantastic service when I had them at my old house. Time Warner and AT&T have a lock on the neighborhood I'm in now so I've had Time Warner for awhile and can't really complain other than the price, but I'm moving soon and was excited to see WoW was available at our new home. 60 bucks a month for 50Mb/3Mb is their monthly fee Vs 15Mb/1Mb with Time Warner for the same price

Anyone else have options?

The only option I have is to move to another part of KC to get Google Fiber.

Yep, I'm like five miles away from Google Fiber (currently in Overland Park). Unfortunately, my options are AT&T or TWC. Luckily, U-Verse is 24/3 for $60/mo. That's not *terrible*, and it's at least pretty reliable.

Ugh that us so much money. I pay $39.99 for 40mb/5mb on Charter in Pasadena.

In my area it's either shitty ass ATT DSL with a stupid cap and slow ass speeds or TWC which has been extremely reliable speeds and no caps. They better not fucking change this.

Can the FCC stop this? It's a horrible, horrible thing for consumers.

Please God keep expanding Google. You've promised my city fiber, now make it happen.

Comcast and Charter had interest in buying Time Warner since late last year. Charter offered something like $135/share in January but Time Warner rejected it. Charter was even planning a hostile take over by trying to get people who have interest in a merger to be nominated to TWC's board. Seems like Comcast was a step ahead of them.

Only days after Time Warner announced they were rolling out higher download speeds. Awesome.
I had Comcast last year before I moved. They were rolling out increased speeds also. I think double.

Wonder how this effects Bright House. If I'm not mistaken, TWC owns Bright House.

I've heard baaaaaad stories involving Comcast but luckily I have Cox Cable as an option and, to Cox's credit, I'm actually really satisfied with them.

This needs to get cockblocked beyond recognition. I'm still seriously considering starting a super PAC focus on eliminating local internet monopoly laws.

TWC isn't great but at least they didn't have caps. Fuck Comcast and fuck the regulatory agencies for letting these shithole companies get away with all the crap they pull.

I'd put pretty serious money on this not happening. People acted like the world was ending when AT&T was attempting to merge with T-Mobile, and that seemed to be a pretty open-and-shut denial from the FCC. I expect something similar here.

This isn't similar even in the slightest sense, this will go through with some concessions from Comcast

How many people here currently are able to choose between comcast or twc? I can only get comcast or verizon.

Noone has the option of Time Warner or Comcast. They have regional monopolies and won't let other companies use their lines like electricty companies do. It's already a monopoly.

It will after Comcast lines the pockets of the people who approve/deny it.

And then hire them.

We've been down this road before.

Yep.

Yep.

Exactly. If I could get rid of shitty Time Warner Cable in my apartment I would do so in a heartbeat. This is a prime example of how monopolies end up harming the consumer.

Time Warner Cable has a deal so Verizon / other competitors can never wire up my building.

Sounds like a problem with your apartment complex

YOU get a data cap, YOU get a data cap, YOU get a data cap!

That would suck if that happen

This is great news to me I didnt mind Comcast. I never had a problem. Then I got TWC. Fuck that! I hate TWC with a passion. They are the worst company Ive ever dealt with. They took a shit ton of channels Comcast use to give with basic package and put them behind a paywall. It goes out constantly and HD channels are always fucked. The customer service is absolute garbage. Call me crazy but ill take Comcast anyday.

I'm pretty sure this will lead to data caps.

Data caps and a tiered internet. Want all the streaming video you can handle? The Comcast video portal won't count towards your cap at all. Netflix will and it'll be slowed to shit, so goodbye Netflix for anyone unfortunate enough to live in a Comcast/TWC zone.

This can't happen.

The story is they both throttle. That story is bullshit, but that doesn't matter to the uninformed masses
My TWC connection to Netflix has always been rock solid and I get SuperHD uninterrupted.

With the amount of streaming my household does on TWC as well as downloads for two XBOnes and PS4s with 10GB updates and such we would surely go over the Comcast monthly cap all the time.

This is so fucking ridiculous I am steaming mad about it.

They obviously have been colluding for decades on price fixing, but this is just a blatant in your face monopoly.

Aren't we supposed to have regulations to prevent this? Oh right, tea baggers and freedom and free market.

FUCK.

Au contraire, we have regulations in place that actually stifle competition in the cable and ISP markets and have made it nigh impossible for FiOS and Google Fiber to expand.

Actually, Verizon signed a contract with NYC for exclusive rights to fiber on the condition that they provided FiOS to every household in the city by 2014.

They decided they didn't want to do it, and stopped expanding FiOS about a year ago. They just walked away from the contract with no reprercussions at all.

So, even when these assholes obligate to a monopolistic contract, they can't even deliver.
