Comcast to impose home internet data cap of 1.2TB in more than a dozen US states next year

What’s hilarious is this is their way of putting a stop to cord cutters. The fact that they’re allowed to basically dominate most areas with their infrastructure to the point where if I want internet where I live they’re my only option and then they’re allowed to impose caps on their customers is a fucking joke. This company sucks and they always have.

Only 90 dollars a month with a forced ten dollar monthly fee for a router you don’t want bringing it to 100 dollars! What a bargain!

I do consider that a bargain (and the router is switched over to a mostly dummy mode and just acts as a modem). $100 (actually I pay $92/month) for 1000 down and up, with 2-4ms pings, and unlimited data? Yeah, that's a great price to me and I'm happy with it.

I'm baffled at the US and their internet. Caps are so backwards and I'm looking forward to when they'll be removed from mobile internet as well.
In Norway providers are competing on speed, price, coverage and additional stuff (like tv packages for those still watching tv, subscriptions packages, customer service, etc).
You'd have thought that the US would be better at this, but reading everything about internet providers in the US, makes me think that the US is overall backwards.

I have them but their pricing is bullshit. There’s a company in California that sells ATT fiber under their name (Sonic.net) with the same symmetrical 1GBPS Internet for 65 dollars a month. I’m going with that soon as my contract is up. I would seriously suggest you see if there’s an ILEC in your area, there’s more than people give credit for that use the same tech but it’s routed through their services and cost less.

I pay Comcast for their unlimited. My bill is currently $120 a month for Extreme Pro 600mps.

Holy shit that is expensive for 600mps download speed. Are US prices normally that high?

BT (UK ISP) offer speeds of 900mps for £60 per month (around 80 USD).

I live in a gated community with an exclusive contract with ATT and Suddenlink, so no others are allowed in. TWC was in the area but I think they sold their stuff to Suddenlink.

I believe paying for the unlimited data is an extra $50 a month. So normally it is less.

This is my first month I've actually gone over, but darned if I dont cut it close. I will be sweating it, mostly game downloads are fucking me up.

Certainly isnt my peacock usage. Not much to be done about all this.

I don't miss the days where I took my Xbox 360 to work to download big files so I didn't risk going over the cap.

This is garbage. It's one of the things that made me leave Comcast. I didn't realize it hadn't rolled out everywhere. I wonder if the goal is to push heavy users to Comcast Business-class service. It's much more expensive, but it's still probably cheaper than going over the cap every month.

Whatever the reason, if you leave Comcast, you should leave.

Id love to leave but there’s no other option where I live lol

Fuck you comcast hopefully this lockdown will force congress to wake up and force them classified isp as utilities providers

What the hell is up with Internet providers in the US? It's mad that over here we're pushing 150Mb/s to be the base and getting unlimited as standard on physical lines but in the US you guys get screwed on speed, get data caps and pay out the ass.

Because Comcast basically has a monopoly all over the place and they do whatever the fuck they want. Also, they were trying to put a stop to it before Obama left office and were on the path to doing so and then Ajit Pai took over the FCC and that killed all of that shit. Pai is awful.

Shit is mind-boggling to me. I've lived in an area for 20+ years where there's multiple options for internet so caps have never been a thing. If one company (Spectrum, AT&T, WoW) tried it they'd just see all their customers switch.

Hell I know people who switch every two years just for cheaper prices. It's easy to strong-arm them with a threat of "Well I'll just cancel then if you can't give me X and go to this other company". They perk up real quick and get you on the line with customer-retention when you pull that card and give you whatever you want. Just have to be proactive.

I have a flat rate and I expect it to be, well, a flat rate. I mean I rarely download more then 1 TB per month but that's not the point. The point is that if I want to I have the option.
Fuck data caps. This ain't the 90's.

At least there's none of the "pay per minute dial-up" shit I had to deal with in the late 90s. That was a pain.

Same shit with mobile. It used to be 2000 minutes, and 2000 texts, unlimited mobile data. Then it went the other way around once companies realized people use more data than they talk. And now they're trying to do "unlimited" data with slowdowns unless you pay extra. Same shit with cable.

God I hate that shit. Honestly think it should be illegal.

Every phone company does this around here with phone contracts They'll advertise Unlimited Data which is actually only like 20gb and then they slow it down so much it's pretty much useless outside of text messages or stuff like that (just text though, don't you even try sending a picture).

i really lucked out by moving into a building with ATT Fiber. only $60 a month and it's unlimited.

Comcast fucking SUUUUCKS. i know it's cliche but i hate them with every fiber of my being. i have so many stories.

it sucks because in America all the Telcomm companies have more or less carved up the markets just like the mob. often you don't even get a choice, if you live here, you have to use this company.

I used to envy America’s internet. Used to

for many of us it’s amazing, but it’s for sure something you look at before moving to a new area.

it’s kinda just like healthcare, for those of us with Money and good jobs, the US healthcare system is amazing and treats us perfectly with Golden soft gloves. But if you are lower middle class or poor? Yeah you are fucked.

basically if you have money in this country it’s amazing. If you don’t, it sucks, and you turn into an extreme liberal and blame everyone but your own shitty work ethic for how bad your life is.

Its called "Capitalism" and they want to earn money. If all the companies agree on it then everyone will have higher revenue.

US last mile is as far from Capitalism as it gets. Remove the regulations on putting cables and it will drop prices pretty fast.

Glad I get internet access through my local municipality owned ISP. 1 gigabit, no data caps, and cheaper than all the big corps. Can't imagine having to be at the mercy of AT&T or Comcast.

Obama was trying to stop it?
How exactly?

What's the excuse?

We have no data caps in the UK, 60+ million people.
Ex commie countries like Bulgaria and Romania have unlimited internet 100mbps+ with no cap.

900mps?

I thought Virgin was the fastest at 350mbps?

Either way, fuck BT. Horrible company

Yep. Full fiber 900.

Unfortunately, it's either BT (where I get 150mps) or Plusnet who offer me speeds of........7MPS. Yes. That's a single 7.

Just checked it, yep, 900. Never knew. Still, fuck BT

I've just moved house and went from 7-11mps with Plusnet (not their fault, i lived in a field) to 300+ with Virgin. I was gutted that i couldn't get Virgin in the previous property.

Plusnet are unfortunately slow AF. I bet going form 7MPS to 300 was like a religious awakening.

Spectrum will do it too when they are allowed. They already asked the FCC to get out of their merger deal early instead of waiting until 2023.

I pay $100 a month and they still want to throw on caps.
