The weekend, new comixology sales! Time to spend money on digital comics!

*checks out sales*

Haunt from Mcfarlane and Image
Wheel of Time adapted comic

time to not spend money on digital comics!

there was something about the art that always turned me away from the books of the old run. But they've gone digital so I can revisit them now if they've held up well. Its odd i'm usually one to give books of all genres and universes a shot (Crossgen, malibu, Image, wildstorm, etc) but these books i never did.

No I am talking about it being rebooted. I did not know this.

I have to say, the only New 52 book I like is BATMAN. Everything else is kinda blech. I'm really hoping MarvelNOW is better.

I just started the new Batman series. Why are there three Robins if this is a reboot? In what way is it a reboot? Isn't Bruce Wayne kind of young for at least three people to have acted as Robin?

How to effectively reboot a universe:

Step 1) make everyone younger

Step 2) pick and choose what is continuity and what isn't based on coin tosses and sales charts. Damien is popular! But now he's a fetus!

Step 3) PANIC!

How old is Bruce in nu52

30-ish. That's kinda besides the point. Fuck canon and fuck continuity. Fantastic Four: Season One happens in the post Mad Men world of after 2007. According to Marvel, the entire fucking history of the Fantastic Four has taken place over the course of five fucking years. Wrap your head around that.

e: fucking finally found it. Kids, don't cling to continuity.

so he raised them all at a pretty damn young age. one before he hit puberty.

That's how it's always been at first. Except for maybe Jason, I think Jason was older when he became Robin. But Dick was like 9 and Tim was I wanna say 12.

Damian's always been 10-12.

Is it supposed to be terrible? I guess I can see how some might see it that way since it's a "reality" show. The parts that I didn't like were most of the haggling and them usually picking on the Asian guy. I enjoyed the perceived comic values and the little history behind the items.

i dont think bruce has been that young in a while though. mid 30s is some crazy shit with so many legacy characters.

do not tempt fate do not contrain Wonder Woman's thighs do not do not
Why does Action Comics Superman look like a tool and then has his big boy suit in Justice League?

TSsYx.jpg

Does no one but me give a fuck about a book centered around Legion? I mean, this is Spurrier's pitch.
Does that only sound fucking awesome to me? Because if that's the case you are all my enemies.

I just re-read through Age of X and Lost Legion....loved both(fuck the haters)
So im really feeling a Legion story right about now.

You can count me excited.

This was pretty neat I thought...
*snip*
And they are GORGEOUS.

Holy fuck, that looks like one visceral fight, i dont think ive seen something quite as vicious recently.

Might be time to change my avatar....Wonder Woman looks so awesome in this version of the costume, it looks like a perfect marriage between the new 52 and classic wonder woman suit.

I love it.

Some of it is good, but some of it is bad. I can't stand some of the guys on it though.

I don't have a problem with the de-aging, but yeah, the time compression really sticks out like a sore thumb. Doesn't seem likely there will be another Robin anytime soon... but who knows. Maybe by compressing things, they opened up the window to even MORE Robins than there otherwise would have been. :O

I agree. There are some guys on there, one especially, that annoy me.

On another note, I ordered two trades of Batgirl Steph from dreamlandcomics and it's taking FOREVER to get it shipped. Some reviews say it takes a while for them to ship it, but its like a month wait.

Finally decided to buy the singles of AvX and really liked the Spidey issue.

hasnt shiva been de aged? sadly that cuts down on one legacy character

Hey guys, it's my brother's birthday and I wanted to buy him some trades as he's interested in reading comics. He's just turned 15. Top of the list is Justice League: Origins but I'm not quite sure what else to buy him. Can I have some recommendations for accessible yet highly commended reads? He did express interest in Daredevil when we went along to Oz Comic-Con a month or so ago, so I had been considering the first trade from Mark Waid.

Edit:
I just asked him what superheroes he likes and he's answered (added some more):

Avengers
Batman
Daredevil
Deadpool
Ghost Rider
Green Lantern
Ironman
Nova
Spider-Man
Wolverine
X-Men

So recommendations for trades from these characters would be greatly appreciated. Keeping in mind he hasn't read comics before and only experience with the characters is via games and film/tv media, I'd prefer recommendations to be as accessible as possible.

Of the DC New 52 Batman titles, what is the general consensus?

If he's new to comics I'd say these would be required reading to start and they are all pretty self contained:

Batman Year One
Batman The Dark Knight Returns
Batman The Dark Knight Strikes Again
Batman The Killing Joke

Watchmen
Ministry of Space (Awesome Warren Ellis trade. Sometimes overlooked)

X-Men Magneto Testament (Magneto pre super powers during the holocaust)
Red Skull Incarnate (Red Skull origin story. If giving as a gift it can be paired with Magneto Testament)

Thanks to everyone's suggestions. I've decided to go ahead and order him Justice League: Origins, Green Lantern: Secret Origin and Daredevil (Waid) Volume 1. I thought Secret Origin might be better read first, before Green Lantern: Sinestro.

Any recommended podcasts? Just watched comic book men and enjoyed it.

Don't feel bad about liking it. It is kinda crappy, but I enjoyed it too. If you like the guys on it, check out Tell Em Steve Dave, it's the podcast that they've been doing for years and it's often hilarious. I probably enjoyed Comic Book Men more for having listened to this show for years - knowing what the guys are really like and then seeing their sanitised TV versions was amusing. They also did a 6 episode companion podcast to go with the show.

As for comics podcasts, I pretty much only listen to the iFanboy Pick of The Week pod. It comes out on sunday and they review the weeks releases. They will spoil some comics but I've found they are skilled at talking about the books without completely ruining them if you've not read them yet. This show has been going for ages and the hosts have a really good chemistry now, the show is always really enjoyable.

I tried listening to 11 O'Clock comics but the show for me is too long and they guys on it are into stuff that is way obscure even for me so it makes it hard to give a shit sometimes.

holy crap@! I don't think I ever got the third issue of that, those issues seemed forever months apart or something.

I just re-read through Age of X and Lost Legion....loved both(fuck the haters)

I liked Age of X too

I just looked it up lol. it was four months between #1 and #2 and then I guess #3 came out 3 years later. son of a bitch, I remember liking it too.

Tell Em Steve Dave is a pretty awesome podcast that usually has Walt, Bryan, and Brian Quinn (guy from impractical jokers) on most of the time with Ming there sometimes. I Sell Comics is Ming and Mike's podcast that's good if you like that aspect more. Fat Man on Batman is a new podcast with, surprise, Kevin Smith talking about Batman. Those are what I'd recommend for ongoing podcasts that feature people from the show.

To the comic aficionados:

How exactly does canon work across different publications?

Batman for example has Detective Comics, Batman, The Dark Knight, etc.

Are all of these meant to be their own self-contained interpretations of the character, or is there cross-over on a hero by hero basis?

Yes.

Depends on the writer/editor/in-house bibles. Major events will be respected as canon (e.g. Death of Bruce Wayne or Knightfall), but minor things might not be tracked (Wolverine eats Lasagne on a Tuesday according to Uncanny X-Men but is seen eating Sushi on a Tuesday in Wolverine & The X-Men).

Don't concern yourself too much about canon, that is where madness lies.

No longer boycotting the Wolfenstein franchise
had a nostalgia overload at the comic book store today...saw this on sale:

Preview: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES ADVENTURES VOL. 1

it's a collection of comics i used to read when i was really young...they came with audio tapes that narrated and acted out the story with sound effects and everything. I never thought i'd see this shit again. I used to read these books every day until they were all worn out with the covers falling off. This would have been like 20-25 years ago and I can still almost hear the sound effects from that first panel in my mind. Its making me want to start reading all the new TMNT comics and collecting the older stuff again as well

then I found the audio narration on youtube - TMNT Adventures Return Of The Shredder Side A P1

Can't even believe this shit. I really never expected to come across this stuff again

I've never heard of these audio tapes.

That said, I was a huge fucking fan of the Archie TMNT comics. My collection was 99% complete at one point, then at some point I stupidly got rid of it all.

I'll be buying all these collections that IDW is doing, but I wish they were being done in bigger chunks. It's going to take absolutely forever to do the whole series at 4 issues in a trade. Hopefully they sell well enough to do it all. There's some very cool stuff down the line, crazy space opera and time travel tales, that great stretch where the Turtles travel the world, all the environmental stuff, etc.

The new TMNT run is good too, and of course the original Mirage one.

Bruce has always been older than Superman by a few years.
I don't know that they've ever explicitly stated that Bruce is older than Clark, though, so it's up to interpretation. To me it only seems that way, because Bruce has a more mature presence, and because of the physical and mental toll the crime-fighting takes on his well-being. Clark is older but not by much (because he is, 1938 versus 1939), but acts younger when compared to Bruce.

And Ollie's the old man, I don't care what the New 52 says.

In theory, all the ongoings are one universe. In practice, most stuff doesn't get referenced by other books and you don't need to know everything that happens, and there may be no consistency in characterization. There'll generally be one or two books at a time that's a quality story and will change things for future stories. If there's a big storyline they cross over and use all the publications for tie-ins.

Ultimate X-Men is going interesting. Yeah, I'm slow.

Spiderman swapping bodies with Wolverine right after the
death of Gwen Stacy arch...
wtf Ultimate Spiderman.
