Welp, just finished reading Hellboy Library Edition vol 1. Both of the stories were obviously incredible, but I was really surprised at the extensive sketchbook in back! I figured there'd be a little bit of sketchbook stuff, but there were quite a few pages there! I was very happy and impressed.

Now to try and convince myself that I should order more Library Editions while the IST sale is going...

almost as bad as that stupid-ass Terry is Bruce's son retcon that shitted out during "Epilogue"

which is too bad cuz it has one of my all-time favorite DCAU moments where Batman waits with Ace as she dies

While the name existed well before this particular scene, it makes the fact that Batman's dog in Beyond is named Ace, that much more meaningful.

Ugh my precious Forever People are being pulled into Venditti's next stupid GL crossover.

Yeah but the crossover looks cool.

Also,

Infinity Man and the Forever People #1: 24,907
Infinity Man And The Forever People #2: 15,903

Crossover bump is probably all that'll save you from a issue 6 cancellation.

This is cool comics-related news.

There's an official stop-motion animated Usagi Yojimbo project in the works that has Stan Sakai's support.

The studio has shared the work-in-progress short film that helped convince Sakai to grant them rights to do a feature.

You talk like I was expecting it to run for longer than six issues.

Nope, I only watched TAS

Do you have Amazon Prime UK? If so, Superman the Animated Series and Justice League are on Amazon UK Instant Video it. Get started. They're part of the BTAS/STAS/JL/JLU/Beyond universe.

Please don't make me do another deal with the devil to get you to do this. Just trust me.

The Boom Humble Bundle added more books. Pay above the average to get:
Fairy Quest Outlaws 1 and 2
Polarity complete series
Suicide Risk Volumes 1 and 2
Protocol: Orphans 1-4

Any of these good?

Nice. A stop-motion full feature would be interesting.

I always thought Usagi would make a good cartoon. Give it the full "Avatar/Airbender" type of animation.

Ooo, I might tackle Hellboy Library Edition Vol. 1 next. Where's that picture of how to read books like a boss at? I might need it for this one.

Fables #143

Yep, I'm still reading this. Not sure how many other GAFers are still reading Fables but I'm going to see this through the end. I may be spoiling a lot of things right now for those that are not caught up yet, but the tensions between Rose Red and Snow White are starting to mount to an all time high. Sides are being picked, armies are being built, and the return of a familiar face who died is starting to come together (whether he's himself or not is still a mystery). I really hope Willingham doesn't cop out these last few issues and give us an actual fight worth reading.

Elektra #4

Elektra has finally caught up with Cape Crow and a decision has to be made where she either collects the bounty or help her accomplice and Cape Crow escape from Bloody Lips. I always see Elektra as a hand-to-hand specialist and thought it was kind of strange seeing her man a turret. Given the circumstance, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. The chase sequence was pretty intense (I was rooting for Bloody Lips, obviously) and hope to see more of the two of them duking it out.

I have a Marvel digital code for Elektra #4; first reply to request it gets my PM.

Spider-Man
Spider-Girl (Anya)
Spider-Girl/Venom (Mayday, Earth X via Uncanny Avengers)
Spider-Man 2099
Scarlet Spider
Madame Webb
Silk
Agent Venom and Mania (If the other symbiotes count, Toxin, Scorn and Carnage too)
Ai Apaec
Patrick, the only surviving member of the Initiatives Scarlet Spiders.
Superior Spider-Man (Granted, he's currently floating between realities)
Spider Woman since apparently Slott decided she counts now.
And Miles Morales is coming to Earth-616 for a crossover soon.
Ever since Kang was defeated, the rest of the Kang Corp disappeared.
And Ai Apaec is probably dead.

Spidey 2099 is shaping up to be a pretty damn good book, and like a battered houswife i find myself going back to ANX simply because i read so few titles. I wish there was an ongoing that was like Scalped or American Vampire. Or is there and i just dont know about it?

Do it! If you haven't read any Hellboy before, you're in for a massive treat. Even if you have read Hellboy before but haven't read it via the Library Editions (which was the scenario I was in), you're still in for a massive treat. It's a gorgeous book.

And actually, the Hellboy Library Editions are such a perfect size that even though they contain a pretty good amount of content, they aren't unwieldy at all. No omnibus position necessary for this one.

Also, the Hellboy Library Editions have far and away the best binding out of any book I own (and I even own other Dark Horse Library Editions). I didn't know a book could lay so flat.

I am picking these up from my library today.

Hellboy: Seed of Destruction
Hellboy: Wake the Devil
Hellboy: The chained coffin and others

If I like them, I will need to buy the library editions. They look brilliant.

I was thinking about buying the Doom Patrol omnibus but then I thought about the ComicsGAF Official Omnibus Reading Technique and remembered I don't have a recliner and I decided against it so I'm just gonna buy it in trades.

Finished up the first volume and I loved it. Once I got to the whole scissormen part I was totally on board. The characters are all fascinating and I can't wait to read more!

Weekly Book Thinks:

Amazing Spider-Man #5: Slott's Spider-Man continues to be a real bummer- I don't like the way he writes any of the supporting cast or Peter himself, his new direction for Black Cat feels forced and awful, Silk continues to be a weirdly out-of-place character, but I'm reserving judgement until we see where Slott's going with this one, if only because the Spider Family is my favorite grouping of characters in Marvel now that the Guardians are ruined. Weirdly, as much as I hate Bendis, it's almost embarrassing how good Bendis' alternate universe Spider-Man book is in comparison to the "real" universe one, and I'm convinced that almost any writer could do a better job than Slott at this point. Also Ramos' art continues to not be my thing, but it does seem notably stronger than it was during his arcs on Superior.

Spider-Man 2099 #2: Fortunately Amazing isn't the only Spider-Family book this week, and 2099 is fabulous. Miguel is a blast to read, and Peter David's writing is genuinely funny and charming. I'm really looking forward to how the future develops for him and his supporting cast, and I hope he's stuck in 616 for a good long time. The only thing really holding the book back is that the art is kinda stiff and does a really poor job of expressing motion or dynamic events. Still it's a huge step up from the art in Fearless Defenders, so hopefully Sliney can keep improving, but as is, I think it's just acceptable, if not particularly noteworthy art most of the time.

Original Sin #7: I know most people hate these constant events, but I guess I'm in the minority of usually enjoying them, and while Original Sin hasn't been mindblowingly great or anything, it's a huge step up from Bendis' trash like Age of Ultron and Avengers vs. X-Men. The twist with Fury,
having him turn into an old man who's been killing shit to protect the Earth, it all feels like a really bummer set up to get rid of the cool Nick Fury and replace him with Samuel L. Jackson in the mainline Marvel Universe too, which is kind of infuriating. Still, it's interesting to watch him tear down everyone in his way using the Watcher's secrets, and I'm interested in the end game of the event, but I'm really bummed they've taken this book in a direction just to get rid of a great character and replace him with a much less interesting one because muh movies.

Nova Special #1: Part 3 of a story I didn't read the first two parts of, I guess I just picked this up blind because I'm such a sucker for Marvel Cosmic. Well, it seemed alright- Nova and Iron Man had a pretty fun little moment in Original Sin, and seeing another one from them is fun- I actually think it'd be cool to see more of Sam and Stark hanging out, and while I don't read Uncanny X-Men, the Uncanny Team was pretty interesting here, even I only have a vague idea of who characters like Triage and Tempus are. It took me a while to realize the bounty hunter was that one guy from the last Nova series that never got a follow up on. I dunno, it was alright, but I don't think I'll bother hunting down the first two parts to see the whole story.

Deadpool #33: I still think this is probably the best run of the character in a long, long time- significantly better than any of Way's lolsorandumb junk, and it was great to see some returning faces and characters this time- but man, this arc has had some really, really bad art that's holding it back. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is still the peak for the series, and the callback to it was pretty depressing, but I continue to look forward where they go from here. Next month's issue is another flashback issue, which are always a blast.

Batman Eternal #19 and Future's End #15: This was a really great issue of Batman, and it feels like the plot is really getting in gear and things are finally coming together. Like I said last week, bringing Red Hood into the Batgirl stuff was the perfect way to improve it, and New 52 Killer Croc is probably my favorite take on the character ever, so it's fun to see more of him. The charm of the weird time travel alternate universe stuff is starting to fade a bit for Future's End, and with the pace it's going, that's a serious problem. Hopefully next week or so it kicks into high gear like Eternal did a few weeks ago so that it can pick up and the plot can actually go somewhere.

Volume 2 is fucking stellar, with each issue being better than the preceeding one. I love the Brotherhood of Dada.

Is vol.2 with the Painting that Ate Paris/Cliff goes Underground/the Unwritten book? Cuz that shit sold me on it for the long-run.

I think they sneak the Monsieur Mallah issue in there as well.

Yup. And it ends with the
Brain/Monsieur Mallah
issue which is comic perfection.

Its a travesty that the official omnibus reading position is not in the OP. It is one of our defining moments as a community, much like me forcing DC's hand with Nocenti and Nostrodamus Korupt. What if new members are coming in here just after buying their brand new omnibus, they would find no info. They may even injure themselves.

The new X-Force's a great fucking comic that starts as a Garth Ennis War Comic, but slowly the crazy wackadoo X-Men stuff seeps in and it's The Best

ViewtifulJC and Birdie, please chime in here as well, I'm looking for some solid opinions.

Gotta friend who is relatively new to the hobby and has never read any vintage Morrison but as a point of reference has read and enjoyed Seven Soldiers, We3, All Star Supes, and his Batman run. I've told her to check out Animal Man, Doom Patrol, Invisibles, and Vimanarama but she wants to know which one to start with. My personal biases lean towards Animal Man, but what say you fellow Morrison fans.

We need a ComicsGAF culture section

tim: I'd say Doom Patrol. It's my first real exposure to vintage Morrison and I'm loving it!
