Saying this as an outsider, but when the New52 started I gave B&R a shot but didn't stick with it past the first couple of issues because the tone felt darker compared to the previous run. Since then, I've gone back a couple of times because "it's good, really," and it just seemed like it was leaning heavily on sentimentality over Damian.

This is how B&R by Tomasi reads to me
post Damien death

I don't think anything Tomasi has written about or post-Damian's death read as whiny, pandering stories getting by on the "sentimentality over Damian". They're stories about grief and how a father, who happens to be a crusader for justice, deals with the death of his son. All of the issues feature a different character interacting with Bruce, showing a different angle and take on the loss of his son. The Frankenstein issue in particular is brilliant--Batman's fallen so far off the ledge that he consults a resurrected monster in an obviously futile attempt to resurrect his own son. Wonderful parallels featuring some damn affecting art.

Fact of the matter is that the story has an overall arc, and if you don't like it, that's fine, but to try to dismiss it as "yuck, Bruce needs to get over Damian's death for more Batman stories" or as shite because you know the end result, that's just silly. Yeah, Damian isn't going to come back from Bruce's grieving and all of his insane machinations, but that's not the point of the story--it's Bruce's dealing with it, buoying between falling entirely off the narrow ledge he's already on or maintaining his footing, and how that affects his Batman-life. I mean, the entire Two-Face arc had nothing to do with Damian, and the few mentions of him were done to illustrate that Harvey knows Bruce, and knows him well, and is going down his own black spiral.

So his metal arms off his old rival/schoolmate and now both Spideys are at the mercy of the Slayers who was JJJ seconds before.
Awesome.

About to dig into One Million. Not entirely sure what to expect besides an insane Superman.

Also considering diving into Identity Crisis but it's...not good? Is what what I've heard?

Dude YES! Have you got the whole entire thing? It's way better when consumed as a full kaleidoscopic whole. Have mentioned it before but it's easily my favourite event, and def has to be in my top ten stories ever. I got it as a kid when it was coming out and most of it went fully over my head. And a few (oh shit I'm getting old, maybe like 6) years ago I tracked down all the issues and read it straight through in publishing order.

It's wildly inconsistent across the board, ranging from brilliant Morrsion-JLA goodness to some issues that are utterly phoned in and terrible. It's got some great early work by artists who are much bigger names now (was especially impressed by the Bryan Hitch GL issue). And it's not just one story, it's probably about 6 parallel stories - there's a Batman arc which is fairly self contained, same for Supes as well. Sometimes the tie ins are fleshing out something that the main mini skips over, other times it's entirely unconnected as the creative team goes hog wild for 22 pages.

And DAT FUCKING ENDING, come back and let us know what you thought of it.

Identity Crisis is aiiight if you like your serious-frowning-rapey-cape comics. It was a big deal at the time, reads a bit (a lot) more cynical and juvenile these days IMO. It's "mature" with the quote marks fully intact.

I personally really like Identity Crisis. Do you like mysteries? If so, it's really fascinating.

I did grab the One Million Omnibus so I should be set. Was poking around the Superman Multiverse topic and it was mentioned a few times, so I threw about $70 at it on good faith that it'll at least be entertaining.

I'm not a fan of grim detective shit, but knowing what Identity Crisis will be all about, well, I'll probably enjoy it.

One Million is so fantastic and, holt moly yes, that ending.

Also it's an important prequel to All Star Superman.

Do not highlight spoiler unless you've read all of DC1M

Seriously man, I forgot the ending when I re-read it and was completely taken in with the story, so when the sun turns green I was all "oh shit they did it they poisoned the sun!!" and then fucking GOLD Supes coming out with a GL ring! wtf, I had tears streaming down my face it was incredible. And then the coda in Young Heroes in Love where they cloned Lois for him, oh man it was so beautiful.

Perhaps the soppiest I've ever gotten over a stupid punchy book.

I missed that.

On a positive note, DiDio said he was going to look into getting the original Fourth World stuff on comixology, hopefully that comes to fruition so I can buy it all again.
Damn. It's one of these things I search for on Comixology every now and then. That would be perfect.

Don't get me wrong, I love the omnibuses but I don't see that binding lasting a decade. And this shit needs to be preserved. The whole corpus is probably my favorite thing ever in comics.

Kyle stopping the exploding sun, the secret of what was hidden on Mars…

I mean goddamn if you don't cry at the end of 1,000,000 you are a robot.

Yep, I would be thrilled to be able to retire my omnibuses and have nice clean digital copies. I'm with you, the Fourth World Saga is easily my favorite comics thing ever.

Can we talk about how great Injustice is? You'd think that a comic series based on a fighting game would be wall to wall fights, but it's actually a great character study of the DC Universe. Tom Taylor is taking the idea of Superman wanting to protect the Earth one step at a time, and in doing so, is able to draw from the wealth of DC history and relationships and mine gold. Today's issue for instance, revolves around
the Guardians being around when Krypton exploded, and doing nothing about it,
which makes perfect sense! And the way the flashback is handled is masterful! You can totally see Superman's point of view.

Now some parts, like
Green Arrow's fate
, be a little hard to swallow, I feel like the amount of restraint coupled with the imaginative use of character interactions has made this my favorite current DC series.

Fighting games are a very character-centric genre, and you really can't expect a static image medium like comics to handle the action as well or better than them, so it makes perfect sense to focus on character stories and interactions - it's why I've stuck with Udon's Street Fighter stuff and feed the far-fetched hope to someday see a proper Fatal Fury/King of Fighters counterpart.

I was aware the Injustice comics were now covering DLC characters not covered by the game's story mode like Lobo, but wondered about the execution - interesting that they're taking a far broader approach to the setting than the game did.

How are those comics handling Captain Marvel/Shazam? It was a bit dissapointing to realize the character was treated much better in MKvsDC (identified the problems with the merged worlds on finding Raiden at the Rock of Eternity, later prevented Supes and Lex from fighting each other and facilitayed a truce to investigate the events) than in Injustice (
killed by Supes for questioning him
), which was weird as hell.

Anyone want to try out Captain Marvel? I have a digital code that I don't need and I'd like to share it with a regular who likes Nocenti's Catwoman* and Harley Quinn

*not really.

I found the book to be really heartfelt and moved at a brisk pace. A good first issue. Kit is adorable. Also another hero with a pet. Hawkeye style.

I'll take it Messi.

If you still have the code, I'll give it a read. I'm still pretty unfamiliar with Ms. Marvel, but the previous run ended up being pretty enjoyable.

Hey guys, I've never bought a Marvel omnibus before. Is the new Uncanny X-Force one recommended to try? Good quality?

Thanks!

I think that intellectually, yes, it makes sense to focus on character interactions when adapting a fighting-based videogame. But it is easier/lazier to make a cash-in where people punch each other for no logical reason. I'm pleasantly surprised that the high road was taken. And also surprised that this book has the best characterization in all the DC books right now.

I do disagree that comics can't handle action as well as videogames. In fact, the static, panel-by-panel nature of comics make it great for pacing interesting fight scenes. A lot of nuance, storytelling, characterization, and plain old cool action beats can be conveyed through comic book panels in a way that would be hard to replicate in a moving medium, much less a player controlled medium like videogames.

As for Shazam, I don't recall him really getting a lot of panel time yet. His fate in the game is kind of indicative of the storytelling in that game. I guess they wanted to really emphasize Supes being the most powerful. Having Shazam being his equal like he really is would have been problematic.

Batman 29. Damn! So good! Capullo man, you keep on wowing me and Snyder keeps on interweaving Bat-lore with his own take by filling the gaps no one else dared to write about. It's amazing.

Some thoughts.

Astro City - really enjoyed this story, book was solid as always
Coffin Hill - good conclusion to the first arc. I'm enjoying the world being built here
Captain Marvel - I fully support Carol in SPAAAAAAAAAACE
JL3K - origins of the League revealed! And I kinda don't care anymore.
JLA - Stargirl! And a plot "twist" that should surprise no one
Secret Avengers - book of the week. Kot is magnificent and if you have any iota of taste you'll buy this book

Man, Hawkeye this week.
I kept hoping all issue that the end would be Clint waking up from being stabbed in the ear in issue 15, realizing that he couldn't "do it all by myself!" as Steve the dog kept saying. That would've hit so many feels. Although, I suppose you could still interpret it that way...

Good to hear about Secret Avengers. What are your thoughts on second-rate Iron Man? I think it may be the first new Kot book I have no interest in, because I couldn't care less about Iron Man comics, let alone one of his side-characters. But it is Kot...

These motherfuckers hating on Batman and...

SMH.

Yeap, that shit is absurd. The best Batbook deserves some lovin'.
