Of course there are. COIE just contains moments that are beyond anything else. Hickman's stuff is arguably better consistently, but I gotta give props to COIE for having no prior template to work with and delivering something that dense.

It wasn't even the first multiverse/Crisis story though (was working within a tradition of them), and the style is very Wolfman/Perez. Perez is the human embodiment of compression so much so that he's actually only one foot tall, so enormous are the forces acting on his being.

Erm, basically, COIE is a very 80s comic is what I'm saying. I don't think it's particularly 'human' or 'true'-feeling, and I don't think the sci-fi ideas were that big even at the time. Hickman is able to mix autistic-level science goodness with sweet, human moments unlike many other writers. Crisis doesn't even get a look in.

The Lemire talk has made me want to read his Green Arrow stuff now, where do I start? Is it a continuation from another teams run?

Look for Green Arrow vol 4: The Kill Machine and vol 5: The Outsiders War.
The last collection of his run will presumably be released next year.

Fair enough. Must be my DC bias shining through. Also makes me want to see Hickman writing DC books.

DC have got Morrison, good enough for me :D I do wonder if him and Hickman have been secretly collaborating, lots of overlapping themes in their work lately. Hickman actually mentioned The Bleed recently, I thought that was DC only.

Now THAT'S a way to celebrate 30 years since SW/COIE.

Have DC/Marvel crossover. Hickman takes Marvel side, Morrison DC, and make Superboy Prime the villain.

Specifically, which title.

Like, the way that Doomed and Robin Rises were specifically put on hold for Futures End.

Look at Avengers vs X-Men. WatXM used a crossover issue to tell an insanely good Warbird story. Then used its Infinity tie in to bring back Lil Guardian.

UXM used Fear Itself to move along Colossus into Cologgernaut.

Thunderbolts used Fear Itself to get the team out of prison thanks to Juggernaut.

And cetera...
Though the AvX tie-in stuff may not have been bad, I find it hard to argue that the event didn't screw up the series and its pacing bad. The start and the end of that omnibus is some of my favorite stuff in comics, and AvX was a blatant side-track that didn't fit in with the feel of the series and prevented it from really getting set up right. I honestly feel like AvX's effect on WatXM is super tragic personally and brought it down quite a bit. :(.

I hear this argument all the time and I just don't see it. As birdie mentioned, it gave us the great Warbird story, that was worth it alone. And it followed the awful Frankenstein story, that did a good enough job of de-railing the title without any outside influence.

In many ways, I remember liking Uncanny and WatXM tying into AvX better than the main event itself (which I thought was poopy).

UXM tied in easier because Gillen's entire story was setting up AvX. WATXM's wasn't, so in terms of the whole run it does feel a tad disjointed.

The Frankenstein story was after AvX. There was the Doop issue and then that arc.

It was more the abrupt shift in tone (gone from crazy fun loving stuff referencing a million different things to super serious) and making the series deal with a ton of "serious reprecussion" stuff instead of focusing on getting settled into the school. I mean, the circus stuff was horrible regardless, but I definitely feel the run would've been far better off if it didn't need to deal with AvX.

but I am taking tiny steps forward
A lot of Cthulhu on sale on comixology and Five Ghost.

How is Five Ghost?

On a whim, I picked up the first TPB from the library, and I absolutely adored it. It was kind of like an Indiana Jones-type adventure story, but with the pulpy tone of Black Beetle. The writing was incredibly enjoyable and the art was absolutely stunning.

I'm without a doubt going to be picking up the hypothetical OHC when it hopefully gets released. It was definitely a huge surprise.

This bad boy turned up today!

Hah! Literally just a few minutes before I saw this post, I had gone to my bookshelf and grabbed this to finally read today.

...Although after posting about Five Ghosts, I'm kind of craving something more along those lines and might read more Criminal first. But hopefully I'll still read Copra today, because I've been really looking forward to reading it.

I feel like I've been away for a while. Have there been 37 new events announced (in a row) in the past few days?

there's a sheets/streets joke in there somewhere. anyway I skipped the last 5 pages. :(

I'm actually really excited for this. I just want some shocking violence porn from a Deathstroke book. A summer popcorn flick if you will.

Hahaha, I ain't even mad. It was weird to see, but I find it to be pretty funny.
It took me a second to get what was going on, but that is weird.

Also, unrelated, but I finally met Frank Quitely! Dude was awesome, and my friend and I were first and second in line to meet him and shit was a little nerve-wracking.
Marvel is teasing old events like Civil War as well as things like Age of Ultron vs Marvel Zombies

It's probably all stuff for Secret Wars

Well, that's definitely something. Is it odd to not care about any of that?

Tryant Rave has the best avatar btw
Thanks homie, I'll let the typo slide this time

No, not really. I doubt I'll be reading it.

That's awesome that you got to meet Quitely, did you get him to sign anything or what? I need more details.

And I don't know if anyone who went to NYCC saw Wes Craig, but it sounds like he had a great time. Glad to see him so happy with what's going on, he deserves it. I want to pick up Black Hand Comics on Wednesday.

That's awesome, what did you get signed? I saw that Nick Pitarra (Manhattan Projects) bought a portrait of Alan Moore from Quitely and it was equal parts ridiculous and amazing.

I'll ask what all us Quitely fans are thinking:

What does his semen taste like??

I got my Absolute All Star Supes, Flex Mentallo HC, and my good friend's floppy of All Star Superman # 7 and 8 signed (he made it so that the fuse from the rocket aligns right into the Q in his name--it's awesome). I let my friend take the first spot in line, and he asked Frank for a quick sketch of the Bat logo, which immediately made the security goons upset. Dude booked it over and said no damn sketches. Which is fine, because I just wanted a picture with Frank.

A sketch would be my favorite comics related item ever, but I know how these things work, and ain't no way was he going to sketch for 100 people.

Also, David Finch was signing at the same time and his line had like 10 people. I felt a little bad.

Like Diet Irn Bru aka the nectar of the gods, man.
