Coming from the PS4, I am blown away by the Xbox One.

Looks messy as hell and gotta navigate there with your cursor to know what it is also its not all in one home screen instead theres multiple tabs like on the top you have to navigate through, it should all be streamlined into one page
So, you think it looks messy and you want them to cram multiple tabs of functionality onto one page? Okay then...

My main gripe with the XB1's interface is that if you don't set your pins for games.... you sometimes have to wonder how the f to get to the game to launch it. it took me like a minute to realize where i needed to go and right now, i can't even tell you how to find it off the top of my head....

also, it's so SLOW. i wonder if this is because the CPU is trash (that goes to xbone and ps4 btw), but the OS just hangs sometimes.

Also, it has a tendency to crash more when you have it on instant on... it needs a full restart every now and then to clear it up.

What I do know is that Microsoft desperately needs to improve the speed of the UI. It is SOOOOOO gosh darned slow. Almost once a day I'll push the Xbox button to go to the dashboard and it takes 5 seconds to go. Or I double tab Xbox button and sometimes it takes 2 seconds to bring up the guide, and sometimes it comes up right away. Or I'm trying to switch between tiles using my thumbstick and it just won't switch because the UI is frozen, and then after 5 seconds 20 of my queued thumbstick attempts will animate on-screen really quickly.

And the Store... everything takes so. long. to. loaaaad.

Yep, this is my experience as well. No issue with navigating the UI, it's actually just like the blades on 360 with the exception that you have a choice of tiles instead of list of items.

UI seemingly means different things to different people.

Personally, I cannot understand how people for years justified a single horizontal line of tiles on the ps4 app and called that intuitive. For whatever split seconds you waited for an app to boot in the Xbox one, you probably spent more looking for whatever app you wanted on the ps4.

All I need to do to find a game on my xbox is turn it on and look at my pinned apps on the first screen that shows

Perhaps those people understand the definition of intuitive, and don't conflate it with something entirely different? The PS4's system is universally accepted as intuitive because no-one could look at it and not understand how it works. Take a user who has no experience of both OSs, take a feature both OSs implement, and I bet you the user will get to grips with the PS4's version faster.

The horizontal line of apps and games on the PS4 is highly intuitive. The things you use most at the left end, and most easily accessible. You go right until you find what you want. If you are a high-end user and have a great deal of content, you may want to customise this by using folders, but, for most people who use a small number of games and apps at a given time, the PS4 system is exceptionally simple to use. To get the same kind of ease out of the Xbox One's system you have to set up pins, but then, this is an extra level of complexity to deal with, and is exactly why the OS isn't intuitive.

Even if you, as someone that uses the Xbox quite a bit, presumably as your primary console, find it to be an efficient OS, but that doesn't make it an intuitive one. The fact that so many people find it to be not intuitive is, frankly, evidence enough to prove that it is not intuitive. Unless, of course, you think they're just saying it to be contrary.

Many people prefer their xbox experience because they don't experience the lag your nagging about.

It says it all that you consider it nagging when people are complaining that the OS, for them, feels horrible to use because almost every action feels unresponsive, in an extremely inconsistent way. Maybe you don't experience or it, or maybe you just aren't bothered by it, but it is an indisputable issue that many have to deal with whenever they use the console.

tl;dr: I enjoy the Xbox One over PS4 here but neither is perfect and both have great qualities.

Pros:
Xbox Side Blade. Easy to navigate. Know what's up (minus one aspect)
Pages. I know what every page does and which ones I don't give a flying crap about. I want social, got it. Easy to scroll. I want Store, got it. Sorts just fine. I want to skip movies and music content, DONE (and I do).
Toasts. Man do I love toasts. So wonderful. So nice. Oh, you sent me a message? Thank you, let me just check that out RIGHT HERE and reply immediately. You want me to join that game? I'll do that with no real hassle.
Text to Speech. Thankyouverymuch. It might not be perfect, but I'd rather edit down a few mistakes than have to type out a 200 character post to clubs to spark interesting conversations.
Comparisons to other players. So great. I don't do it much anymore, but it's king of shittalk territory here and it's super fun to user. It's also great to find out how far your friends are in a game so you don't jump into spoiler mouthed game sessions. (Give it a shot and you're welcome!)

Cons:
Slow as fuck. I sometimes hit the guide button and wait 3 seconds.
Screenshots/movies are slow due to the above. I feel like I'm always half assing things now. (Even more so with the addition of Cortana and her ability to hear more complex sentences while at the same time going dumb randomly, even with a calibrated sound setup. I use a Kinect on a Slim.)
Party icon in side blade. I do sometimes think it's Friends occasionally.

What I'd change:
I still think for STORE CONTENT the ORIGINAL X360 was best. Let me see the latest TITLE content was added to and then let me determine what inside that content I want to see. Don't list the 100 EA sports outfits across the front page.
Custom filters. I'd like to see this for social feeds. Perhaps have a subscription portion for favorites vs all vs developers, etc. I'd love to determine who goes in what. Toss in some clubs while I'm at it.
Custom folders. The new sort is nice but PS4 gets this one. Let me use the cool grid system with the sizing feature which is excellent mixed with naming my own folders. Limit me to a number of folders, fine. Just let me for example separate demos, or disc, or horror, or whatever the hell I want.

There's more to love, hate, and change, but I do prefer the Xbox One OVERALL to the PS4. I use both daily (for work and play) and I gotta say, telling someone how to use a PS4 vs and Xbox One is usually a hassle because someone gets lost. Be aware however, EVERYONE GETS LOST! Both have their swamp zones where no one returns. My issue with PS4 is they have too many embedded fields and you have to dig for some shit which should be up front and center. I get people liking the rows vs the grid, it's just not for me.
And the ONLY console "I" have ever "accidentally launched" the wrong content on was PS4. It isn't always clear what you got highlighted when you start dropping down some tiers... well... it wasn't. You do learn and adapt. I think the teams should look at each others shit, balls up, and go "Ok, let's play with this concept and put our own spin on it" and everyone can just argue over little shit...
wait...

I love me some Bone, and thanks to BC it has managed to beat out the superior hardware of the PS4 and become my current prefered console. But the UI is hammered shit. I could forgive it if it wasn't slow and laggy as fuck. It's worst during the first few minutes after boot, but even then it can sometimes hand for an embarrassingly long time.

I agree. Even though the PS4 is more powerful and I always make find myself trying to decide what console I'm going to get multiplats on, I find myself on the Xbox One more. I like the extra bump and performance games get on the PS4 over Xbox One the majority of the time, but I love the UI and the features of thr X1. The store is better than the PS4's IMO. I like the pins on the X1 even without the pins I like the games and apps layout better than the PS4. Before the folders on the PS4I would forget I had some games because of how it only shows your recently played games on the main screen and then if you go into the library it's just horrible IMO. Everything just lumped together games and demos that aren't even on thr system and it takes time to find stuff if your library is big. I also never get thr comments of people saying thr X1 is slow and clunky, it's not to me. The PS4 is faster, but it's not that much faster. If the Xbox one had comparable power and multiplats ran better thr PS4 would only be used for 1st party games. Now I split my purchases between consoles even though most of my friends are on XBL...

Don't care for the OS, but the controller is sublime.

I'm always surprised how different peoples perception of controllers are.

Bought an x1 controller for pc and was immediately like what's up again with the fat heavy controller and now tiny thumbsticks, also dead zones .

I learn to use any controller so it's not big deal but probably going to get covers for them.

Not a bad controller but maybe an 8/10.

Xbox UI is okay to navigate in, but the speed became terrible slow again after a short period of improvement. Xbox Controller especially the Elite Controller are the best for me (size of hands, weight).

Btw the reason for the UI being so slow is that major parts of the what is displayed by the UI has to be downloaded from the Xbox Live Servers first like your friends list, your text messages and the activity feed. Once downloaded the UI gets more responsive.

You say you don't want the screenshot picked apart as though that makes what you're saying correct. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO HAVE THE SCREEN LOOK LIKE THIS AND NOT BE ON THE LEFT. The rest is dimmed out as fuck, and your cursor is ALWAYS the highlighted object. The part that says Sign Out in blule? That's the cursor. If you're actually controlling this it's impossible not to know that (and if the person wasn't using a green profile background, it woudl be the only thing that could even remotely be interpreted as highlighted on the entire page). So, you have a 'specific' example that's just provably false. This is the shit that is infuriating about these threads man.

I see you kindly missed where I said...a screen similar to that screenshot.

And my issue was the user area not navigating as a whole. Your post even points out part of the problem. The colors. Its too much going on. Just make the focus of where I'm at obvious.

But yes we must all praise the UI and none of us had issues with it.

You ok man?

It's come a long way since launch, a lot of your positives are things that people complained about that have since been fixed.

Reads like a corporate shill, right down to the Talking Points.

OP, if you aren't being paid you don't have to do their work for them.

I have destiny running in background and am watching vudu. Despite this, I am not seeing 5 second lag. I'm not even seeing a one second lag save for loading after I snap PBS kids

vid.me/gtBA

Sorry for vertical recording.

Mine is just as fast, but I have seen videos of others using the UI and it appears to be unreasonably slow for some. MS needs to make it fast for everyone.

I prefer the look of the One's OS a lot more than the UI of the PS4, but it's sluggishness is too much, and it does tend towards cluttered. But to be fair, it is doing much more than the PS4

The PS4's UI is ugly as all hell, but it's fast and functional.

As a whole, though, prefer to game on the One--when playing console

Couldn't agree more, though the build quality seems a lot better on the Xbox controllers.

I'm just glad I don't have to touch that awful UI ever again after selling my Xbox. The 360 was fine. It's like a drunk guy worked on the Xbox One OS.

Just to illustrate how insane you and the person you're quoting both sound, and why it comes accross as sad trolling:

Ok. If they disagree with you they're paid shills? got it. Fucking nonsense.

Thank you for this video...lol

Go to 11 seconds, pause the video, show it to someone who hasnt used an XBO and ask them where the cursor is.....

Is it to the left or in that lil strip to the right? Or is it up top where that pink circle is? You cant really tell whats in the foreground, the left area or the strip.

Thank you for proving my point. But yes...we are trolling. You got us.....we're insane....

Like I said earlier.....a screen similar to that screenshot. Because that screenshot is...somewhat obvious. Somewhat.

I like my Xbox. That said, here's a story.

Last night I was playing BF1 on my Xbox, thanks to EA Access. That's an awesome feature the PS4 doesn't have. Anyway, I did something cool in the game (dropped a grenade perfectly at a guys foot as he ran over it, cartwheeling him into the air and getting me a kill) and wanted to share it.

Making video clips and sharing them on PS4 is really easy. This was the first time I tried to do it on Xbox. I messed around with the UI for 5 full minutes before giving up. Is it always recording like PS4? It it easy to edit like PS4? I'll never know because I never was even able to figure it out. The UI is slow and confusing.

"Xbox, record that."

I think both are pretty on par when it comes to the UI. PS4 seems to be missing some details while the Xbox often feels like a cluttered mess.

On the controller side, as always, an Xbox controller with symmetrical stick layout would be my preference.

Hey guys, if you prefer something over another thing and post about it on a discussion board, you are a shill.

Just shut this thread down; it's console war bait and the crazies are coming out the woodwork.

pin all the shit you use and it's there ready for you to get right into it... it couldn't be easier.
And the recently played stuff works for me because I don't play more than a few different games at a time so everything I need is right at the top.

To access your other games and apps the icon is one move to the right.

I get it's a bit confusing if you have never used it, but once you know what to do it's shit easy.
I like the UI, it's good to look at and the social elements are done well.

I agree OP the controller difference is night and day. Sony needs to let go of the nostalgia and really bring their controller to the current gen. Even with it's improvements the Ds4 is such an archaic design.

I can't believe there are people in this thread saying they have trouble finding their apps/games on an xbone. There's only a "my games and apps" button in the upper right corner on the first screen you see after booting the system. Seems pretty easy to find to me.

My only issue with consoles is you can't customize the ui like you can on your PCs. I rather have a couple icons on the main screen so I can pimp out the background with cool picture. And let me make those icons as small as I want and allow me to place them where I want just like my desktop does.

Don't own an XBO, but I try the controller out every time I stop by Target's Electronics department. So at least once a month, and has been for years now haha.

I actually don't really like it, and namely due to the triggers. They feel really mushy, and the grip isn't as nice on my fingers due to how I hold my controllers. The sticks are nice, but I'd say about on par with DS4's. Don't prefer either one. Neither's is as good as the 360's.

Yep. The UI is awesome. It just performs like crap. That's the issue. Most that knock the Xbox UI are confusing functionality with performance.

I mean, you still can't even manage DLC on PS4 for fucks sake.

Is there a way to lighten the general tone and colour of the UI on xbone?
It is stacked and not very focused and becomes easily confusing. I needed 2 minutes and several clicks to simply find the demo section in the store. The logic behind it is pretty strange. Also several clicks to get to the game hub. I don't know but Windows is everything but intuitive on that console. I try my best to getting used to it, but I can't help to compare this OS and it's UI design to iOS (that is how it's done) vs. Windows Phone (wtf). Nothing should need more than one click to be found.

EDIT: The most annoying thing is install times with this console. This is worse than PS3.

The fact that when you click stuff to open there is a small delay before it opens? Hence slow and sluggish.

If you don't have said delay then youre truly lucky. The UI is awful. (IMO)

I don't get a delay at all. Mine works buttery smooth. Shit loads pretty quick

Must be something to do with Internet speed maybe?

And try to capture your moment in a game....

it is so easy, just one click, so easy and fast....

On ps4, it is a pain...

My main gripe with the XB1's interface is that if you don't set your pins for games.... you sometimes have to wonder how the f to get to the game to launch it. it took me like a minute to realize where i needed to go and right now, i can't even tell you how to find it off the top of my head....

The big "My games & apps" tile right on the homescreen didn´t give it away ?

I don't get a delay at all. Mine works buttery smooth. Shit loads pretty quick

Internet speed, or ping at least from their servers matters the most.

Despite in Australia, our dashboards connect to the Azure server in fuckign SINGAPORE for our dashboards, which means I never get less than 200ms ping for my dash, hence, its sluggish as fuck.
