Coming from the PS4, I am blown away by the Xbox One.

I feel the exact opposite.

Designed with gamers in mind (who don't mind waiting for half hour while a game installs and then just when you think you can play updates the game)

Can't back you on this. The PS4 UI is straight to the point, and doesn't tend to chug along through menus like the X1 UI does. X1s UI is less terrible than the launch metro UI it had when I got it at launch , but it still could use some fat trimming to speed things up. Still loving Gears so far, and my Lunar white controller is the best controller I've ever owned.

Other than the occasional slow load times I barely have any issues with the X1 UI. I genuinely don’t understand people who find it difficult to use. It’s also really feature rich which is nice.

Also the controller is like 50% of the reason I didn’t even bother considering the PS4 (that and Halo).

That's a UI issue? I don't think so, and also there's a section under your games & apps that shows which games have updates to install, which is a good thing about the UI.

I've only had a PS4 for about a month but so far I'm not impressed with the UI at all, it feels so sparse and disjointed compared to the Xbox One.

But the PS4 has a bunch of great exclusives so I'll put up with it.

It's the only half decent usable UI on console so there's that. The controller is definitely the main difference between the two. Everything I've tried on PS4 actually feels outright less playable because of the DS4, while on the other hand I use the Xbox controller as my default on PC and whatever supports it because it's the best controller yet.

I think I would prefer the X1 UI if it was snappier, the features are better and the layout is nice but in the end it feels less responsive than the PS4 UI.

X1 controller is easily better than the PS4 controller.

Feel the same way. After all the bravado related to the PS4 and migrating to the console, I've found myself shift back to the Xbox.

.....

The PS4 does a lot of things well. I still have mine. But wow, this Xbox One console feels like another generation ahead of Sony when it comes to it's UI.

Wow. Each to their own. But as a recent PS4 owner personally I think the complete opposite. The PS4 UI feels like a generation above the XB1.

For one it doesn't run at snail's pace...

After using both for a while I definitely prefer the PS4 overall. The UI is faster, the XB1 UI feels far too laggy for my liking. Plus after using the XB1 and PS4 controllers I was surprised at how much I prefer the Dualshock 4, it's just more comfortable for me personally.

Still, I like both machines and am happy to have them, though PC will always be my main platform.

i really really dont linke the new interface. It feld slow and chaotic. But before that, yeah the XB1 was great.

I have never used an Xbone but Microsoft are a software and OS company. I would expect them to have a better more user friendly, much better thought out UI and OS for the Xbox.

I don't like the way Sony handles the store on PS4. Even Simple stuff like seeing how long you got left on your PSPLUS account takes too many steps. In general Sony make brilliant hardware but their software is usually shit. Even Steve Jobs said this. I have various pieces of Sony hardware over the decades and can only agree. I currently have a Sony TV the UI is painfully slow and navigation is unintuitive.

The ui is straight up trash, the store, while easily accessible is a pain in the ass to navigate, and the Xbox one s controller feels cheap to me, had my LB get stuck in a month after owning it for no reason. But that's just my opinion.

It's certainly good to have contrasting opinions, I guess.

The Xbox UI designed and refined for gamers in mind? I feel the opposite, really.
I feel exactly the opposite as OP as well....can't stand the UI and I like the comfort of X1 controller better than DS4 but definitely not the d-pad or stick layout

Cool beans..

What impresses me most? The attention to detail. It's quite apparent from the moment you boot the console up that the UI was designed, and refined, for gamers in mind. For instance, the option to view the bandwidth usage of your console and be able to see a history of that usage hour-by-hour. How many times have you felt a download was taking longer than usual? Whilst the PS4 shows you a progress bar of how much data has been downloaded thus far, the Xbox One allows you to monitor the actual speed (Mbits per second).

Friends & Parties

With the PS4, you go through at least 3 different inputs (Home, Up, Find Party Icon, Create Party etc) just to create a party session. It's fine as it is, I was happy with it. But then I experienced something different with Microsoft's console. Double-tap the Home button, you have your friends list snap to your screen . As you highlight a friend, the party icon prompt appears and you need only press X to start a session with that person.

Store and Friend Activity

Although a marked improvement over the years, Sony's integration of their store is abysmal as many of you know. Their Friend Activity wall is an eye-sore of a jigsaw puzzle mixed in with ads. The Xbox One allows you to scroll through all of this pretty smoothly, and again, something that is consistent, the UI is clean and organised. The eye icons are not an eye-sore and 'liking' or commenting is actually pretty simple to do. This leads to a greater level of engagement within the community.

The Store is just there - it's not an app you have to open.

The controller

This is it. This is what I really want to talk about. The controllers of both consoles - in my opinion - epitomise the difference of perspective when it comes to designing games consoles. Whilst Mark Cerny is a godsend when it comes to introducing/explaining the hardware of Sony's machine, Microsoft made just as much a fuss in drooling over their new controller.

The grips on the side of the controller as well on the new, smaller thumb sticks give it the impression of being a better made device than Sony's offering. Whilst I - like many others - found the rubber peeling off the DS4 sticks frustrating, the One's controller made me smile as I felt the triggers vibrate. Seriously, the triggers vibrate. And upon notifications, you feel another vibration from...somewhere. I haven't pinned it down yet but it's really subtle.

The PS4 does a lot of things well. I still have mine. But wow, this Xbox One console feels like another generation ahead of Sony when it comes to it's UI.

Your gonna get a lot of hate for this but apart from a bit of lag sometimes(not often) I much prefer the Xbox UI. and when the lag is annoying voice command it and it snaps to where it needs to be.

And there is no question the controller is better, at least for the kinds of games I play a lot on console (open world FPS). Just being able to put your own bloody batteries in it makes it better, let alone the ergonomics and the far better triggers. I don't know why the DS4 gets so much love.

Having both, Xbox controller and ps4 ui would be the killer combo. I hate the Xbox ui and the quality of the dualshock 4 is appalling. :|

I think which you prefer depends a lot on how you tend to use the UI and what you want out of it. X1 is more feature rich and has a lot of different ways to do certain things. For some that is logically sound and others confusing.

This point ...
The Store is just there - it's not an app you have to open.

That's just a effectively a preview though isn't it? (maybe that's changed). If you select anything from that part or if you want something not on that page then it launches an app. *Everything* seems to be an app - even the basics like "Settings". That has improved a fair bit since the earlier UI, but it's still an issue. I get why, but it shouldn't end up being so obvious to the end user that this is the case. Some stuff should be pre-loaded on boot so the user experience is smoother.

I also prefer my XBO to my PS4. I'm very frustrated with the build quality of the PS4 and the DS4.

The PS4 UI is cleaner and easier to navigate, but I think some of the hate the Xbox UI gets on GAF is hysterical. This is a special interest hobbyist forum of hardcore gamers. I introduced my 10 year old step-daughter to the Xbox One last week and she's getting around it just fine.

Could be better don't get me wrong, but it's totally usable, and there are aspects of it I even prefer. I think the store and access to the store is better, and I think the extra customisable touches are nice.

The controller is where the experience of using an Xbox shines for me. I always forget how nice that controller is until I go back to using it and instantly fall in love again.

It's a really nice system that's finally got the hardware and price right with the S model. I've spent more time with PS4 this gen due to buying into that much harder at the start, but as we sit today if pushed to choose a favourite I think I'd pick the Xbox One.

The PS4 system UI is better for me. It does not have ads pushed in your face, it is more intuitive and more responsive. Xbox One menus are a mess, especially configuration and finding "your content".

I am not even going to mention the Xbox One Marketplace, which needs to die in a fire.

The controllers? Xbox One has better triggers, but the rest is about the same. The Xbox controller bumpers are still bad, even after two iterations and improvements. Face buttons and d-pad are also bad on Xbox.

I honestly think both consoles have quite disappointing user interfaces. But that's probably more to do with my personal preferences, I have no interest in the social, sharing, multimedia focus that's the in thing these days. They both feel quite cumbersome, slow and complicated to me.

But yeah, even the basic Xbone controller is leaps and bounds ahead of the ds4. So much better that it's not even a fair fight.

I got a One S a few weeks ago after not booting up my original Xbone in at least a year and I was wondering when the interface turned into the UI version of a billboard. Maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance, but... I dunno, not for me, I think.

While we are on the subject of UI's, when I want to install something from my PS4 library, why is there no way to see how big the file is?

Where would the fun in that be?
It's exciting to see if I need to delete some things because what turns out to be a 7GB or so file won't download because I only have 46GB left.

I think it shows file sizes in the store itself, but I've not been able to access that for the past fortnight.

Happy to see this post, way too much hate on the X1 dash out there. I've never had a problem with it - aside from occasional sluggishness.

This is my general feeling as well. Both UI's are perfectly serviceable, but I also prefer Xbox'S because of the versatility once you become accustomed to it. It rarely has sluggish response, and when it does it isn't so glaring or intrusive that it impacts my experience.

I sometimes feel like it is just cool to hate on the Xbox UI and a lot of people are just more comfortable with the UI they've used most. At the end of the day both consoles have reasonable and user friendly UI's that are just different from one another. If you want a sluggish UI, use the Wii U and go back to the home screen from playing a game ;)

So much this. I feel like they don't even bother to try to know the UI before they jump to conclusions.

Functions are there, you just have to know where they at. When I got my PS4 in February, for example I didn't know where the downloading progress were, I figured it out and I think it's a great UI, and with the quick menu (similar to the Xbox Guide which I love btw) they added with fw 4.00 and it's even better.

Nah....it's just slower and clunkier, especially after extended use. But everyone has a preference

Loved Xbox 360 UI - original and the later revision ...

But as someone who picked up a One S for FH3 a few weeks back and has a launch day PS4 ... Nah, not feeling the Xbox UI at all, I've figured it all out now, but still for me PS4 is Miles better in this area.

I can get things done so much quicker on PS4, hate having to press the Xbox Home button twice to screenshot - it's so hit and miss.

Controller is superb but it always was even with 360 versus PS3.

Glad you are happy with it, we all like different things but I'd bet my mortgage on it you are in the small minority in this one.

I actually thought the system worked better, was more responsive, initially with Kinect than it does now. Cortana also seems less responsive at least in my experience.

The PS4 system UI is better for me. It does not have ads pushed in your face, it is more intuitive and more responsive. Xbox One menus are a mess, especially configuration and finding "your content".

Flick stick right > Press A to get to all your games & apps is a mess?

Or pressing RT to get straight to your pins is a mess?

Speed and installs aside I don't get the complaints people have for the UI. In terms of button presses to get to where you need to be it's insanely fast. Everything is right there.

Saying "Xbox On, Xbox Goto Netflix" as I walk in my front door after work is an incredible UX, don't have to faff to find a controller or browse through a bunch of clunky interfaces, it's perfect.

Get a Kinect.

I find Xbox to be faster to get to the app I want with a pad, the PS4 has this weird thing with showing content in rows, so you have to go through a lot to find what you might want.

I have both consoles and think the PS4 one is trash, especially the store which just takes SO long to find anything.

can't stand the UI personally. it's a mess. it's the main reason alongside the massive updates that has stopped me playing it this last year. it's no 360 that's for sure

The Xbox One UI needs some work. There are so many bugs and slowdowns that the console is not exactly user friendly. Every update seems to only add new futures and completely ignores the much needed general optimization.

Opinions! Glad you like it. I think the One's UI / OS is terrible and a step backwards from the 360. I like the PS4's quick and slick UI.

Odd that you use the xbox store not being an app as a pro with soooooo many basic functions on Xbox are done through an app.

The UI isn't as bad as people say but I definitely prefer the PS4's

The Xbox UI has a ton of extra fluff, yes. The controller is fantastic, yes.

In terms of usability though, it's lightyears behind PS4 in so many ways.

Total opposite here, the Xbox UI is impossible to use for myself. I have had the system since launch and find it to be a confusing mess. I still can't find things I need easily like I can on my PS4.

The Xbone UI is my favorite console UI. Everything makes sense in where it's placed and how it functions. I love how clean it looks throughout, as well.

If you get a chance to try the Elite controller you'll be blown away again.
