Most of the time when there is outrage over a game being scored too low, it comes from people who are excited for the game, but haven't yet played it. It comes off as just denial to themselves.

There was nearly a riot at GameSpot's office when they had the audacity to score Twilight Princess an 8.8.

The easy answer is that people need to grow up and not flip out over review scores, but this has been happening forever. I think getting rid of review scores would only redirect the outrage somewhere else, towards something else. Criticism of a review is fair game if you feel a review is poorly written or the reviewer made poor arguments for/against a game, but once it turns into harassment and sending death threats, then you've lost all perspective. Social media has made this worse much like everything else, and platforms like Twitter aren't the forum for constructive discourse, but it's easy for someone to be toxic there and the platform holders want their users to be at each others' throats, so they aren't going to do anything about it.

For his part, Grubb also comes off as a loser here, as he has often over the past several months. Pandering, attention-seeking and virtue signaling all wrapped up in one Twitter post. He's part of the problem and he doesn't recognize it.

I'd also say post-release patches, free added content & DLC (& the now standard backwards compatibility on consoles) have changed the value of game revues forever, i.e. a fact which has made some review sites "tentatively" adapt ("reviews in progress" are a start), but not fully realize.

Cyberpunk needs a release day review... & then further amendments to its score over time. Because in six months, it'll be a little beast (especially once its next gen patch has landed). But if the ps4 & One generation have shit ports, their scores should also reflect that, i.e. in a normal world, it would be totally fine to trash Cyberpunk (for example) on the base ps4 & One with a 50% out of 100% due to its shitty bad framerate & bugs, whilst giving the PC Version a 90% score... with the added caveat of "you need to powerful rig to play this" addendum.

But I'm not a fanboy who sodomizes himself with his favorite toys (be it a piece of plastic hardware... or some pseudo social justice B.S. which dictates rankings & scores hurt ze feelings).

I remember when IGN gave god hand a 3/10, lmfao but also smdh thinking about all the people that gave it a pass because of seeing the score on that garbage review.

From personal experience, of course.
But, if you try to play the role of those who have to suffer such harassment (and therefore feel empathy) only for having "dared" to undermine the media credibility of what must necessarily have been considered an essential masterpiece for anyone, coming to read about threats against such a person who expresses himself negatively about it, I would say that on a social level it certainly cannot be ignored.

It can be. I do it every day. You can try to bring the empathy card into this, but the truth is, I don't care about the "poor whittle devs." They're adults. They can take care of themselves.

Meta Critic score are written in Contracts for the Development of new games. As I sad AAA means 85-90+ Metacritic score as an example. Thats why I do not even care about Polygon or Kaotku reviews anymore since they o not have scores attached. With no scores attached I do not care what people write about it.

Unfortunately, toxicity is always going to exist no matter the community or industry involved.

People need to understand that reviews are opinions of the writer. Nothing about them molds an opinion that is expected to be shared by everyone reading or watching it.

There are multiple examples all over the internet, including GAF, where some people just can't accept what another person's opinion is. They think that their own is factual, and no one else's matters or has any merit. Which, yeah, you're certainly entitled to your own opinion, but dismissing others while acting like yours is final and factual is unjust.

That being said, a lot of people put a BIZARRE amount of power in a review/rating number and/or score. So much so that I'll never understand. If you love it or enjoy it, you love it or enjoy it. No ones opinion is going to change or affect that. No one can take that away from you. That's it. Want to discuss it? Go right ahead! But there's a difference between a cordial discussion, and someone telling them they're wrong because their opinion doesn't match their own.

I'm over the Gamespot review situation because, yeah, it's her opinion. The issue people apparently have with it is that it sounds almost like she reviewed a game that she didn't care to partake in. A lot of stuff sounds like she didn't really dive into things people cared to know more about it, etc. So some people got salty as a result. Some also got salty about the rating itself. Others started saying that people were angry because the reviewer is a woman. It's all ridiculous. Truthfully I don't know why people continue to give game sites like Gamespot a click if they're potentially worried about this kind of situation. Kotaku and Polygon gave me plenty of reasons to ignore them all together several years ago, lol. Half the time it feels like these sites are duking it out with one another over who can flex their opinions that have nothing to do with the video game their reviewing harder.

The Quartering can be respected for being a "hardworking" YouTuber. That being said he's obviously one of THOSE YouTubers that goes after clickbait-y drama related topics. I mean, his thumbnails should be a give away. I personally think he's kind of a douche bag, but there are people out there that like him, so to each their own. But that style of YouTuber exists, is popular, and is all over the platform.

Hate him? Don't give him attention.

Hate the review/review score/Gamespot? Don't give them attention.

I don't understand why people blow these situations up to what they are, or give them attention at all.

An overall score for a review is fine. Each reviewer has an opinion... Based off the video it seems she really wasn't interested in playing it. I think we all have played a game and wasn't sold at first at some point but came back around (days/weeks/months) later and was able to enjoy it. In the end when your reading or watching a review your subjected to their opinion. You should find a reviewer that you trust (if you depend on reviews) but you can't Force someone to review it your way.

If you don't trust a reviewer or journalist simply don't watch it
or supportt them. Cyberpunk apparently had 9 million pre orders... So the game is doing fine regardless.

Peoples egos are way to fragile these days and use the word toxic if they don't agree with something way too readily.

The outrage is linked to it being clickbait. He knows the lie will get people angry at the reviewer and he knows making people angry will get him clicks.

I agree that the video isn't sexist but it's still very misleading.

He says "she barely played the game" when in reality she put 10s of hours into it and completed the main story. He says "you had no interest in doing the side quests, you're not a fan of RPGs" when in reality she put 30 hours into the side quests and praises them as the best part of the game.

In the written review she goes into detail on all the things she did and the RPG mechanics she interacted with. I think The Quartering just watched this video of her and didn't read the actual review she wrote.
