Comparing Horizon Zero Dawn and TLoZ: BoTW

I can't stop laughing. This kind of stuff actually wouldn't stop me from playing the game, but something about that delivery & voice coming from a future caveman has me rolling.

It's the teeth that plunge it into the surreal for me. They keep putting more and more effort into facial animations but mouths still plunge it straight into the uncanny valley.

- That one cutscene

Only because people will still be talking about Zelda in 10 years, Horizon on the other hand...

Will probably get sequels that let people remember it? I'm sorry but even if I've criticized the game there's nothing to say that Horizon won't be remembered in a Decade aside for all life on earth dying or something.

Zelda seems like its gonna be really special. Horizon looks so incredibly derivative, like they went down a checklist of every new AAA western game trend and cobbled it together. A little Witcher, a little Mass Effect, a little Skyrim, a little Far Cry, a little Uncharted/Tomb Raider, throw in a Strong Female Character ™ that's progressive with the kids these days, and BAM.

I like to think of this like this:

So I'm at a new restaurant in the city that has this beautiful looking burger. It's really good, comes with truffle oil french fries and i drink it was a fancy saison beer. There's a lot of things going on with it, maybe too many flavors, but these guys new and I'm satisfied.

But the next day I walk over to the diner I stop by once a week and have the same hamburger I've eaten almost a hundred times before. It comes with giant crispy fries, plain ol heinz ketchup on the side, and a coke... and its as satisfying as ever. It's dependable delight.

There ya go.

Think you may be in the wrong thread tiger.

Some elements seem derivative and boring, but the core gameplay in combat looks really strong and really well fleshed out though. And the enemy design lends it such an unique flavor that should not be under estimated.

Edit: Also, really about the Female character? What a Short sighted comment.

No... anything but a female lead!

I actually don't think that's going to be a negative. A lot of great games this year have been about really nailing the execution inside of well trodden genres.

OP, you forgot to compare dungeons and cutscene quality.

I can't though. I have no idea what cauldrons in Horizon Looks like. I can guess and probably say that Zelda has mechanics that better support more varied design which favors its potential dungeons. But those could still not be great. And I can't really say much about Cutscene quality because we don't have enough detail on those. Though, I think Zelda has slightly more visually interesting sequences because of its artstyle.

Like a broken record...
Funny, isn't it?
Every 5 or 10 pages, somebody shows up to remind everybody about "that scene with the weird voice acting".

Like a broken record. TOTALLY by accident, of course.
Funny and still very interesting. Some are really concerned because of Horizon ;)

And you claim Horizon is derivative? What a cookie cutter ignorant comment.

That scene is going to be Horizon's version of that Uncharted 3 cutscene comparison image of Chloe. An excellent way to know to not take someone seriously once they bring it up.

Please describe how it would look for a game to have a female protagonist that you wouldn't dismiss as "Strong Female Character ™".

I'm glad someone did it, tbh, because I hadn't seen it and it was fucking hilarious.

That can never happen, people are always going to pick sides concerning Horizon and BoTW, at least on GAF.

Why on earth would anyone who intends to buy both games hope that one of them doesn't measure up? I'm hoping they're both amazing games in their own right. If I do wind up with a clear preference I don't see what that would be universally true. Others can and certainly will have opinions that differ from my own.

Girls, they have cooties right?

Funny I feel the exact opposite. I think zelda is going to be fine but so much of what it is doing is adopting other popular ideas.

Majority of what its doing had been based from the original LoZ with even some sprinkles from other Zelda games aswell

I see people are still circulating that one scene and talking about it as if it's indicative of the entire game. There's plenty of Horizon media out there that showcases better voice acting but let's not talk about that, let's continue down this ignorant road.

Yikes. I'm amazed how this thread lasted this long.

Why would a video game cause concern?

You fanboys are strange.

Also this whole thread is stupid. Both games look fantastic, I'm personally more excited for Zelda due to being a long term fan of the series. If my concerns regarding Horizon being a Ubisoft-esque open world game turn out to be false I shall pick the game up for summer.

The repeated posting of the cutscene is just trolling. People getting wound up by it should realise should they stop reacting people will stop posting the thing. Big RPGs have jank - TW3 is the only huge open world RPG I can think of where a cutscene didn't strike me as janky.

Both parties need to stop needlessly comparing the games, it derails threads pointlessly. That FATALITY poster was quite bad for it initially, I recall their first post during e3 last year when Horizon was shown to mention how there's no way in hell Zelda could match up. Now they're acting holier-than-though in all Horizon threads.

Funny I feel the exact opposite. I think zelda is going to be fine but so much of what it is doing is adapting other popular ideas.

This would be the correct way to put your statement. Adoption implies they didn't think about what that would mean for the game. Adaption means that they did.

Why are there towers in Ubisoft Games? To serve as gateways to content essentially. There's a blatant artificiality that isn't satisfying present which is the issue with them.

Why are there Towers in Zelda? The Answer is simple, to give the player a vantage point to see into the distance and facilitate the loop of exploration that they designed the game around.

Same Concept, different result.

the main character sounds fine, the guy is odd sounding. Having seen footage for the first time, the eyes look weird to me -- they look realistic but still out of place somehow

That scene is all types of bad, there are other scenes in the previews that are much, much better. Hope that's the only throwaway scene in the game.

For Watch Dogs, it makes sense since you're a hacker and you unlock points of interest, kinda like how I real hacker would collate information gleaned from what they hacked and then turning it into useful data.

This is next level spin.

Damn.

It's not so much the problem of having that awfully acted scene, it's more the idea of having the people responsible thinking "that's good enough".

What other parts of the game they may have thought were good enough?

This is honestly, one of my top criticisms. It should be addressed and talked about, and not just brushed under the rug. Or be called a fanboy, honestly this is worth talking about.
