Controversial GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition Remasters Get Big Update 3 Years After Release

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

The remastered versions of the classic GTA Trilogy games have just gotten a big update. It took 3 years and 1 day after launch but Rockstar Games have issued fixes to GTA The Trilogy Definitive Edition. This patch brings a highly requested change and more.

The update is now live on Xbox, PlayStation and all PC storefronts: Steam, the Rockstar Games Launcher and the Epic Games Store. In terms of download size, the Rockstar Games Launcher version has the GTA San Andreas update at 18.44GB, GTA Vice City at 8.83GB and GTA III at 4.15GB. On PS5, Vice City’s update is 1.657GB. These numbers will vary depending which storefront you got it from.
Now for the main, requested addition to these highly controversial remasters. When this pack came out 3 years ago, fans complained about the lighting. When they released on mobile last year in partnership with Netflix, Rockstar Games announced a Classic Lighting mode. The studio said turning on this mode “restores the look and feel of the sky in the original games.”

Since these mobile ports came out in December last year, fans of these classic games have been asking Rockstar to bring over this feature to the console and PC versions. It has taken 11 months but it is finally here. In the pause menu, click options, then select the graphics tab. There, you’ll find the Classic Lighting setting with an Off or On option. By default, it is set to On.

As reported by the poster on Era, the update has removed the Grove Street Games logo from the splash screen. Yikes.

Is that the only change? They did nothing about the draw distance in San Andreas that makes the world feel tiny other than the added fog that doesn’t help at all. What about Tommy, does he still look like a douche from Jersey shore? The other characters in San Andreas do they still look like cartoons? What a shitty release. Rockstar sucks so bad now.

I have been playing an emulated version of San Andreas on my PC through PCX2. I have the game set to 4K upscaling and have been using a 60fps patch. The game still looks absolutely fine and Rockstars attention to detail is still seen even way back when. It's been a joy to go through the game with such clarity and higher frames. That's all this game needs imo. Maybe the draw distance could be better but I accept it because I know I'm playing an old game.

These Remasters did too much. Red Dead Redemption is the type of Remaster these games needed. Not AI upscaling crap.

Out of interest what do you want done to RDR2?
Everyone wants a 60fps patch for RDR2, a game that is still regularly in the sales and download charts and gets absolutely no love from the developers anymore.
The sad thing is that modders have long since brought a 60fps patch to hacked consoles as proof of concept.
It would be easy for R* to do this professionally for the current generation, but I suspect they'll shelve the game for another 10 years so they can sell it as a big remaster at full price

I haven't played this in forever, so I may be wrong. I downloaded Vice City on the Deck and so far I'm seeing:

* Orange sun tint like PS2 San Andreas.
* Now you can run and aim (finally!).
* Car reflections look a lot better.
* Game seems to be running a bit smoother.
* DLSS option in graphics (was it there before?)

I plat'd all three back in the day on Xbox, so if this update is as good as it looks like, I may for it again on PC.

Is the game still broken though, I've seen videos of cars suddenly launching themselves 100ft into the air, helicopters flying through buildings and coming out unscathed, the player falling through roads into the abyss, etc....

I think we got those low quality carbon copies of mobile versions "remasters" so rockstar can give us proper remasters (remakes?)in few years, that are actually solid, big budget and of high devtime investments, maybe by end of next gen :D
We all know Take Two loves us to not only double but triple dip too :)

Played through the remasters trilogy a few months ago after attempting them on an original PS2 and I have to say I much preferred them from the right stick camera control to the ability to quick start missions you fail to the 1440p/60fps crispness/smoothness.

Saying all that I do get why people were annoyed as the games do look different. The trilogy obviously was nowhere near ready when they released them but after a few patches they were much improved.

I also agree a simply res/fps bump to the PS2 originals would have been much cheaper for them and better for the fans as it would have retained the artstyle.

Did they ever add checkpoints? I'd maybe play them but I don't wanna have to drive back to the mission and start again every time I get killed

This doesn't read like a big update to me. Some useful changes sure.

I platinumed san Andreas a few months ago and it looked and played fine. I experienced no glitches. It's a good remaster.

12 months for a multi billion dollar company to bring skyboxes from mobile to console, bravo rockstar.

Absolute shit of a modern company.

And peoples still have so much hope for GTA 6… even the former director of it left. Peoples might want to lower expectations and be pleasantly surprised rather than the opposite.

Chill out mate. They probably gave this project to the interns while the main team all work on GTA6.

I don't know what it was like 20 years ago but it is shocking to me how many CS students (4th/5th year and Grad) don't know how to code. Either write it, or read it.

All they had to do was take the PC originals and add some mods:
