Corpse Party Book of Shadows |OT| Soup is Good for your Eyes.

I really don't think it's that—it's just a difference in how relationships can sometimes work in Japan, and how Japanese people differ than those in the West in showing affection for one another. I see similar confusion of "OMG LESBIANS" when it comes to the relationships between female friends in Japan, and it's nothing of that sort.

Actually, I believe the creators said that, yes, it IS that.

Er, are we considering CP spoilers open season? You really shouldn't be playing this if you haven't played CP after all.

Just got that ending in Chapter 5.

letting Kizami catch Yuka.

Good lord, that soul crushingness.

Maybe it's just the way it was localized, but from what I remember, it really did seem like
Yuka liked her brother way too much. I mean she was jealous of Naomi, lying to her brother about her crush being on someone in her class, and confessing her feelings while dying.
Idk how else to interpret that.

On your second point, based on the description for BoS, seems like it's canon that Seiko, at least, is walking on the gay side of life! ;-)

I'm almost disappointed that Kizami is in this. I mean, great writing, but man, what a vile character. Hated him.

Had you not got any of the alternate endings before now?

EDIT: Also, does anyone know if the soundtrack is by the same guy? Because the music on the first game was excellent. Loved the recurring theme.

I'd gotten 3 I believe: all variations on the final area. The one where
all five escape, time rewinds, and Yuka doesn't escape but the other four do.

And yes, Kizami is a vile bastard, but he's still fascinating. Glad he's back.

Absolutely not glad. The game really was morbid. There were sometimes where I thought "This is too far". I never found it at all scary, but it really brought me down at points.

No idea how you managed to avoid the other endings. Did you use a guide or something?

Nope. I did have a hint with the statues, but that's it.

Wow, you're way more pro than me. Apart from the chase sequences, I always ended up going the wrong way.

Listening to the theme from the first game now. Hope it shows up in the sequel.

Yup, Lipschultz/wyrdwad says as much in the interview that Macstorm conducted/linked a few posts up.

I guess what I'm saying is that that doesn't necessarily trigger weird feelings for me. The
younger sister / older brother
thing seems to be a relationship explored quite a bit in Japanese media, and from the anecdotal experiences I've had with Japanese people, I think that kind of scenario can easily exist, but it's all very innocent in nature. (I mean, even in the West, you see examples of that, where
younger siblings have some level of advanced attachment to an older sibling or parent, which is eventually grown out of
.)

At the same time, I've not read any of the comments in this regard by the creators. I do still think some of it comes down to how such relationships are viewed differently by the two cultures, but maybe the intent was meant to be more serious than I'm giving it credit for.

If so, then awesome—as it makes Corpse Party an even more twisted universe. *laughs*

Certain bad ends in chapter 5 make their relationship about as subtle as a hammer to the head.

Speaking of which,

why DID Sachiko have him kill Yuka in that wrong end? It just seemed pointless, even for her.

In the original Japanese at least, it's pretty clear that it's meant to be
the incest-y kind of love
. I think the localization does a pretty good job of reflecting that too. It doesn't help that she's a 14 year old girl that's written like an 8 year old girl.

To provide emotional catharsis for those of us who couldn't stand Yuka. :p

Oh, sweet baby jesus, she was 14?!? What the fuck.

Possibly, though I think at the end of the day it's just a target audience thing. Anyone playing this game in Japan has probably encountered a thousand Onii-chan~ characters like her and isn't going to be bothered in the slighest. They make for popular characters even. The really cute little sister character is also one of those things that brings out the player's protectiveness, which helps the experience feel that much more intense because you really don't want anything bad to happen to her.

It worked on me at least, she's one of my top 3 (along with Seiko and Yoshiki) and parts of Chapter 4 and 5 were just painful because of it. Never mind I got that bad end in 5 on my first run through. Ugh.

Got the last 5 and 1 bad ends I was missing.

I think I'm done, back to Eternal Punishment. I'll need a light and happy game until BoS.

A shame about that glitch since I was OCD about getting everyone's name tag. I spent about 5 hours looking around in various chapters and searching Japanese websites for it's location before finding out it's unobtainable through normal game play. >:

Figured I'd pop in to address some of the stray questions in here.

Wasn't the first game a 2D/top down game, or am I thinking of another recent PSP horror game?

The first was, yes. This one, however, is not. The gameplay is completely, totally different. Those who found it difficult to play or who had trouble getting through chapters in the first game should find this one significantly easier to clear without a guide. I would strongly recommend going into it blind and trying to figure things out on your own, and I don't think there's too much chance of getting stuck if you do. Persistence will pay off in spades.

And yes, Kizami is a vile bastard, but he's still fascinating. Glad he's back.

Kizami plays a pretty prominent role this time around, too. We get to learn a bit more about the "why" of Kizami. The writers do an absolutely excellent job of developing him well beyond his trope, as it were.

Also, does anyone know if the soundtrack is by the same guy? Because the music on the first game was excellent. Loved the recurring theme.

Yep, Mao Hamamoto composed the music for Book of Shadows as well. It's overall a bit more subdued and atmospheric, but there are definitely some tracks that capture the awesomeness of the original's OST perfectly:

Speaking of which,

Not sure how to do spoiler tags on here, so I'll just answer your question with: it's because she doesn't like her. At all. And delights in watching her suffer. (As many of us do!) ;) Book of Shadows expands upon this quite nicely.

So is gameplay less butt this time? I just used gamefaqs after getting frustrated after 2 chapters.

I really like the gameplay in the first one. :( But yes, the gameplay is totally different this time around, and is far more straightforward. You shouldn't have any trouble getting through the game without a FAQ or walkthrough.

Picking this up Day 1, even though I haven't gotten around to the first game yet. Love seeing continued support for the PSP with quality titles at reasonable prices.

Have you imported the Japanese version of EP?

Ha, that track nearly goes into the Chapter 1 theme at one point. Very cool.

Start with the first for sure, they're very much related. And this spoils one of the original's biggest late game twists in the first chapter.

Got it. I am going to pick up a Vita today as there don't seem to be many sales now anyhow. I want to be able to throw some support to XSEED. :)

MY BODY AND WALLET ARE READY.

In all seriousness, I adored the first one, so to get the second one mere days before my birthday is a huge treat. And I also can't wait till I can gush about it here. Because man, doing that in the VLR thread was fun.

Now, place your bets on if we'll get Corpse Party Anthology/2U...

Man, Shangri-La (The Corpse Party 1 opening song) is so ace. The Book of Shadows song is decent, but I really like this one.

Just finished CP1. Got most but not all the endings, don't know if I can bring myself to get the rest, the game seriously needs a cutscene fast-forward button :)

To unlock the last chapter in BoS, will I need I keep CP installed on my Vita? Deleting the bubble deletes the save data doesn't it?

I've wanted to play the first one for a while but they still haven't released it here in Australia but since the video game classification system has been improved here it seems much more likely.

Rather than waiting for what may never come, if you're really keen on playing it I'd suggest making a NA PSN account ;)

Did they actually not bother trying to get Corpse Party released here because they thought it'd be rejected by the classification board?

If that provision they can't be re-submitted stayed it was probably a gamble worth avoiding.

Oh, for sure. I just don't remember hearing anything one way or another, like XSEED coming out and making a statement that they decided against trying to get it classified

My body, wallet, Vita and butt butter is ready.

What is this talk about having a save file unlocking a chapter? Do I need to transfer my save file from my PSP? And I have the US version and am planning to do EU version of BoS -.-.

The final chapter is either unlocked with a complete CP save game, or BoS with all the endings up to that point completed. Not sure if US will unlock EU, it's possible though.

Eh idk about that, it seems like a big hassle changing accounts on the Vita and I haven't done it on my PSP before so I'm not too sure about that. For the time being I think I'll just wait and see what happens.

The closest I have is this response I got from them last year:
https://twitter.com/XSEEDGames/status/197361953709096961

They didn't say they tried and failed, just that it seemed doubtful so it's possible they didn't even bother trying. That said, their more recent response seems much more positive.

Ah that's right, I forgot about what a hassle it is to change accounts on the Vita. I'll cross my fingers for you for an Australian release of both!

No, you don't need a complete CP save. You just need ANY CP1 save.
