Could sony release the PS6 for less than the PS5 pro?

There gonna have to for main commercial market. They said PS5 Pro is for enthusiasts. Would be stupid to have that same price for normal buyers.

Will come with a separate disc drive to keep the price at 399- 499. People will bitch. Media will fake uproar and FUD.

Id be surprised if they sell a PS6 digital version for more than 499, would be a slow start for them like the PS3 era in that case
Unfortunately generations are dead and with it most subsidised hardware to make money back on software because premium software is on the decline. There is very little reason to subsidise hardware anymore with most premium software sales being replaced with lifelong GaaS stuff people play between multiple generations. It's going to be difficult.

If they charge $800 for the PS6, and "upgrade" from the PS5 Pro that will play games that still release and play ok on the original PS5 for 4 years without a single game exclusive to the PS6. Only to then release a 1K PS6 pro. And probably still release games for the PS5.

Speaking of the ps6 and price, do you think Sony will go for pcie 5.0 storage on the ps6, or stay with 4.0 for lower cost (and heat)?

You can't make backup of games to external drives.. I mean you can copy/move them there but these games are tied to your account, so if anything happens, the backup is worth nothing.
For sure the digital ownership rights must change. Until then, I just prefer the disc.
How is this different to other digital stores? Everything is tied to accounts.

If the PS6 is same price or more than the current Pro, then that will be the end of Pro Models. Once consoles start reaching into just below the $1000 price point, consumers will just go pc with the justification that at least for the price you are getting a machine that can game/multitask. I bet even Nintendo will start shipping $700 consoles, at some point down the line.

Nope 699 is the new base cost for a Sony console I'm pretty sure. They will reduce the cost of the Pro to 399 and the PS6 will be 699.99

I think the ps6 will launch starts at 499, Sony need the numbers to sell games in the volume necessary to be profitable. The pro is a enthusiast product. Therefore the premium price.

Cross gen, they don't need to sell as fast as possible like with PS3 -> PS4 transition. They will sell games on PS5 while people will slowly buy expensive PS6s.

I don’t know how much going to cost but if Sony releases PS6 without disc drive like they did with Pro then I’m done with them.

My theory is that one function or aside of the PS5 Pro was to indeed test the waters on pricing for the next console. Sony said the Pro was for a hardcore and niche market, but the PS6 will be for the masses. There is no way the masses are paying $700 or more for a regular console, especially without a hard drive or stand.

I really think sony tipped their hand too far with the Pro. I argue it's clear they are trying to create a new anchor, and economic conditions may very well necessitate that, but it does not mean that they will continue to see the same numbers of sales they have seen from prior generations.

This all falls in-line with the thought that they are going multi-platform.

No.
It's gonna be 799 and 199 extra if you want that fucking disc drive, you fucking peasants.
And Linus will find a way to show you how to get a PC with better specs for a few quids more, using a used cpu.
You heard it here first.

$800 or maybe even up to $1000 is what I’m what I’m expecting for the PS6’s price and that’s without a disc drive. I just don’t see any way an entirely new next generation console with considerably or significantly more power will cost less than a mid generation upgrade.

Sure it is. The PS6 is for a wider audience. Why would it be as expensive or more expensive than a device aimed at your hardcore market?

Actually, thinking about it, in the US, maybe (without getting into politics), but the price of the Pro 'may' also go up considerably

you guys think a next gen machine will be cheaper than current gen machine?

It won’t be cheaper than $499

Comparing it with the price of the Pro makes no sense. The base console has to appeal to a much broader audience that is usually more price sensitive.

What if they all ditch physical media? You're gonna quit gaming?

Get your wallets ready for at least a $599 price tag. Sony better choose a CPU with 3D V-Cache for PS6. Keep those frame rates up.

Most people who will be able to buy a PS6 at launch will probably be enthusiasts, they could price it at $700 for the first 2 years then drop the price.

What time is it?
I expect it to be less expensive than the Pro unless the Pro sells gangbusters. Like a lot of others have said, I figure PS6 will be $599 with an optional disc drive.

Let’s count for inflation.

Ps3 Launch Price- $937
Ps4 Launch Price - $532 - Pro Price $524

Not likely, & I hope they don’t. The PS5 needs to be a leap forward and anything less than $699 isn’t gonna cut it, especially if releasing 2 years from now.

ps5 pro = xbox one x
ps6 = xbox series S
xbox series S more powerfull and cheaper xb1x

PS6 for $600 in 2029. Why?

1. They will target mass market with PS6 and either break even, make barely any profit or take a loss initially. PS5 Pro exists because Sony is making a significant profit. If/when a PS6 Pro comes, it'll be priced at a premium.

2. Chip prices will still be expensive due to all of the AI demand, but hopefully the diversification of chip fabs around the west and manufacturing outside of China will ease the cost pressure. By 2027, at least 3 major chip fabs will be operational between just Arizona and NY!

3. 2029 because I think Sony will want to wait for the geopolitical effects to roll out.

The ps6 is supposed to be a mass market product. A 700+ buck device would be dead in the water no matter if their competition has already checked out at that point.
With the way semiconductor pricing is going the next gen has "compromise" written in capital letters all over it already.

Companies have an engineering department, engineers after making some console need to make another because these teams cannot be fired or remain idle receiving salaries without producing. That's why there will always be new devices (some useless) every 4 years.

I feel like the much broader audience will just cope with the price increase.

Yes, and it will look like a win and people will praise Sony for it.

We've already seen Nvidia do the same stupid shit.

Ultimately, I think it’ll come down to how MS prices their next box if they release one around 2026. I’m sure Sony would love to be able to ‘reset’ people’s price expectations with the Pro at $700 being the new baseline.

Also, as some have pointed out, it’ll also come down to how expensive the most advanced node (3nm?) pricing will be at the time. Hopefully the US foundries come online by then and TSMC loses their monopoly.

Not a chance, even MS won't do that again

I think that's the only way to have an affordable next gen console while still offering an option for people who want more power.

Only one console means it'll either be expensive or basically a slightly better PS5 Pro.

Generations are dead basically. Inflation killed it.

i think that is also one of the reason why there are so many crossgen games and sony is focusing on BAU rather than user base within the same generation, it works like a PC.

Please, the reaction to the Pro just shows how little visuals matter beyond a certain point.

We're at a point where the "next level" is what, movie-quality CGI?

As if people even get "wowed" at CGI in most movies anymore!

Stop for a moment to ask yourself, what excitement are you actually chasing? Are graphics really the pathway towards "next-level" entertainment?

I really dont see how ...ps5 remains almost the same price as 4 years ... the p5 pro is 700 dollars with an old cpu ... how in 4 years you will get a generational leap from the pro and cut the price from the 700 ???

The ps6 will have a much better cpu and a new gen GPU ... and will cost less than the pro ? ... not a chance!

Only if sony comes with 2 skus ... ps6 with specs very similar to the pro with better cpu .. costing about 500/600 dollars and a ps6 pro from the get go for 700/800

Don't forget the PS5 also receives multiple price increment in various countries too

Not "could", they "should" if not "MUST" to succeed, main audience is absolutely not ready for a PS5 Pro price, Neogaf is definitively not representative of this mass audiance, remember the PS3, the same will happen.
PS6 can't be 800€ without drive, it's a pure joke as well as the artificial limited supply of this so-called drive.

Sony is on madness mode actually.

Inflation is always happening though, you can't get away from it.

Releasing the Series S and X at the same time (essentially the base console and a Pro console) was a serious, arguably biggest, misstep by MS so why on earth would Sony replicate that?

Sony, historically, has always subsidised their main base next gen console and I can see the PS6 being no different. It makes the money back on game sales for the short term, then they ramp up production and soon after make a profit which is something MS cannot do due to Gamepass (they still subsidised it but they just eat the cost and as far as I am aware are still not making money on console hardware sales)

The Pro console is making a profit out of the gate, that's why it's so expensive in comparison, and it will be more profit than what they are making from base PS5 and slim consoles. And they make even more from the stand and drive (that drive and plate probably costs, what, $20? maybe less to make and they sell it for $80. You are paying a premium now so that the PS6 can be subsidised in my opinion. So I still reckon the PS6 will be around $500 (with drive, $450 without but drive purchasable. It may be a bit higher but I very much doubt it's $700 like many think it will be)
