Also, few general strategies to understand for competitive.

Terrorists:

Rush a bombsite together. Yeah, there are other strategies that are valid, but your best bet is to storm one site with all 5 terrorists. There are usually 2 paths for any given site (except for poorly balanced maps like Dust), so you can also consider sending 3 players one way and 2 players another.

Example: on dust2, you can have 3 players rush long A and 2 players rush short A (also known as catwalk).

Counter-Terrorists:

Do not rush all together. Do not rush into the enemy team. Generally, you'll want to have 2 players guarding the paths to either site, and the third player can help guard one of those or watch another chokepoint. As CTs, you basically want to be watching all the chokepoints, and as soon as you know the location of the bomb, call for your team.

Example: on dust2, you can two players guarding B from within B, another player middle guarding both B and short A (also known as catwalk), one player guarding long A, and one player guarding short A.

Besides that, learn the maps, and learn the chokepoints.

Im so on the fence about this one...I havent played CS (1.6 or Source) in a very long time...so I know Ill get my ass handed to me.

Tried the xbox trial and thought it was solid aside from the horrendous framerate, but I know it will run better on my PC (i7, GTX 460 1GB).

Yeah, it'll run fine. That's my build.

This counter-strike is awful

Ive played hundreds of hours of CS from beta 2 to CS:S and this version is the worst by far. I dont give a shit about recoil changes or weapon balance. The game looks like shit. Its not even source engines fault. The weapon models, player models and map design changes all look ridiculously bad to me. Weapons look like plastic, the terrorists and CT's look stupid and dust maps look like fucking iraq. Wtf?

They should have just ported CS:S to consoles and called it a day. Barrels not rolling around anymore sucks as well.

Bought the PC version and just played the xbox trial. There is aim assist. Games were laggy, seems p2p to me. 5vs5 isnt enough players. Cant use radio commands
On PC no server browser ?

The only thing I like is that they added rewards and the TF2 style kill cams. Besides that I will stick to source if I ever want to play counter-strike again

To anyone really struggling with the game because you're new to Counter-Strike, you basically just have to stick with it. Many modern FPS conventions like ironsights/sprinting or whatever may have given you some bad habits at this point, so you're going to have to shake them if you want to get good.

5vs5 isnt enough players.

Actually 5v5 is perfect, that's what competitive/pro CS tournments play at and have for many years.

So what's the verdict on the 360 version here?

Worth the $15?
well, if its anything like the ps3 version, i am generally unhappy about it. i still like it enough to continue playing it, so it's worth $15, but i really wish i could play the pc version instead. my two biggest issues are framerate and k/m controls. surprisingly, i feel that the ds3 controls are very good but i'm not sure if i could bring myself to use it.

what a wierd thing to complain about. it doesn't sound like any version of cs is the game for you at all.

I...don't even know what to say to this. So much misinformation.

And really...you're complaining that Dust looks like Iraq?

Honestly, i noticed that stuff too. Like players going up ladders and not even having an animation for it.....it looks really bad. But i figured thats CS.

Ugh. What?

There are server browsers on PC. You can also use radio commands. And 5v5 is the only way to play CS.

So far 1.5 > 1.6 > GO > Source.

I think the models and weapons look great, they don't feel any better or worse than source. Dust looking like Iraq is a matter of preference I guess, it still looks pretty much the same.

Barrels rolling around was horrible, everyone wanted to get rid of that.

There is a server browser on PC, you must have missed it.

5v5 is ideal in CS and is the default for competitive play. You can play casual mode or custom servers if you want more people.

Radio commands work fine.

I can't speak for the console version flaws.

The only thing I like is that they added rewards and the TF2 style kill cams. Besides that I will stick to source if I ever want to play counter-strike again

Good for you? CS:GO has improved visuals. The matchmaking is nice b/c it will put you into a vanilla server with no silly mods, something that is hard to find in Source or 1.6 these days.

Built in competitive mode is great. Once they implement proper team matchmaking it will be way easier to find a scrim, as the game will do it for you. No more need to sit on IRC or get an ESEA membership, and no worries about non-vanilla servers.

The bots work much better than in previous versions.

Just played the trail on 360...
The game proved a point that console FPS's NEED auto-aim. The sticks aren't as accurate as a mouse and never will be. I could hardly even shoot anyone was so stupid. I'm not talking crazy amounts like COD, just a little bit goes a long way.

Is it? You're sad.

Alright guys, I'm just going to be frank, Valve/whoever developed this did a terrible job for the console versions.

I've played a lot of Counter Strike Source and Counter Strike on PC, there's a certain fluidity to Counter Strike, things feel smooth but you still feel weight. The console version of Global Offensive feels absolutely fucked. You basically swivel around to either the left or right side and up and down, I completely understand that you can't nail the fluidity of a mouse and keyboard, but the controls currently are abysmal. This is the stiffest shooter I've played in years on a console, maybe this gen. The Orange Box didn't have this problem, neither did Portal 2, this port is just sad.

I would expect Global Offensive on PC feels perfectly fine and it's either a better playing Counter Strike than Source or at least it's different enough that it feels like a different game. The XBLA version though is almost unplayable.

EDIT: Before anyone asks, yes I changed the sensitivity. Jacked it all the way up, doesn't change how stiff this feels.

Just got a 17meg update. Hmm..

Release notes for 8/22 Update

- Addressed some stability issues.
- Fixed perf issues when logging is enabled.

- Added a convar (cl_crosshairgap) to control the gap of the classic crosshair.
- The smoke grenade smoke is now taller so it's now more useful to use it to block places like double-doors in dust2.
- Players can no longer interrupt another player defusing the bomb by standing in between them and the bomb.
- Disabled sv_pure on listen servers.
- Fixed an sv_pure bug that resulted in false inconsistent MD5s
- Increased search iterations and time delay for keeping sessions in the ignored pool. mm_ignored_sessions_reset can now reset the ignored pool.
- Fixed a case where MOTD prevents input to the team select screen.
- Fixed occasional "server is full" error when matchmaking into classic casual games.
- Fixed an exploit where a vote could be called for an invalid map.

- added some sound mix settings suggested by pros
- increased the volume of bullet impacts and ricochets
- increased the volume of 3rd person footsteps
- increased the volume of weapon foley sounds (reloads, etc.)
-decreased the volume of ambient sounds

linux
- Added steamcmd support to srcds_run. In order to have srcds_run auto-update when the CS:GO dedicated servers get patched, the srcds_run script must be run with the following options: -autoupdate -steam_dir STEAMDIR -steamcmd_script STEAMSCRIPT
where STEAMDIR is the directory to the steamcmd dir ( example: ~/Steam/ )
where STEAMSCRIPT is the name of the script that steamcmd should execute ( example: ~/Steam/csgo.txt )

- Love there are bot matches on the 360 version.

- Miss the need to purchase bullets.

- I got a Magic Bullet award in my brief (5 minute) trial, and so think I have glitched myself out of being able to unlock the actual achievement - which is VERY frustrating...

- Otherwise, brought back a lot of memories. Was there always a 'Chicken!' voice command option? :D

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.

Unfortunately these maps were mostly too big to be played in regular rotations and weren't ever popular. There were some amazing maps to be found on fpsbanana back in the day.

My server is fortunate, we've played this map and many multiple times with 32 players online. We have to be one of the most populated source custom maps servers. A map like nipperhouse can get pretty hectic with 16 vs 16 players.

Why compare a scrim/competitive match with public play? 5v5 is ridiculously small for a public server. The dynamics are entirely different.

I like it, but at the same time it makes me remember what I hate about CS. Waiting between rounds, I have no patience. I just want to get back in there. Hip Firing only, I really dislike, for the weapons that have it zoom looks weird and is slightly glitchy.

Specifically to this game, the graphics aren't great. The gun models are laughable. The game is SEVERELY lacking in animations. Your character has no weight. It's like you're skating around instead of walking/running.

I think the game is alright, but it just isn't my thing anymore. I won't dedicate lots of time to it, but I think I'll play a match here or there.

Surface of Me

I'm not an NPC. And neither are we.
So I'm trying to play the trial on the 360, but the only thing the game is allowing me to do is move. I can't jump, shoot, switch to an item, or open the buy menu. This happens online and with bots, is this a known issue? Its not like its my controller since I can navigate the guide easily.

Regarding your graphics comment I think they didn't want to change the dynamics too much as to previous CS games.

I'm assuming you're playing the PC version?

The XBLA version looks pretty bad visually, Half Life 2 on the Orange Box looks better than Global Offensive on consoles.

You have the option to join public servers with higher player counts though.

All the maps are balanced around 5's, and if you're queueing for competitive then it should be with the intention of playing a proper 5v5 (ie. communicating, assigning sites, etc.).

Im still debating whether i should get this or not. But with all the problems people seem to be having, seems like it still needs some work.

I also can't connect to the official servers. The good news is that I discovered that the community servers allow for more players. That was my only real complaint.
