Favourite episode is Bohemian Rhapsody. No, wait, Pierrot le Fou. Mushroom Samba is pretty good too...

Pretty depressing show overall though. Dat Real Folk Blues.

I remember seeing the first episode at a anime con in 98 or 99 and being totally blown away. Still one of my favorite shows of all time.

Using someone else work with permission is plagiarism now?

the soundtrack credits don't appear to cite the original artists, smells like plagiarism

i would give her a bit of a free pass if it was only relegated to cowboy bebop since a lot of jazz is in interpreting other works (i use interpreting loosely as she does a few minor changes to an otherwise 1:1 copy of someone else's song and still passes it off as her own) but she also does it for a bunch of ghost in the shell songs so i think it's safer to say she's just a hack.

even with this scummy revelation about yoko kanno, bebop is still king; it's that good.

Some people who have received the Blu-ray have said it's actually region free. I guess you'd have to do more research into that. Word on the street prior said it was locked. Maybe you can import after all!

Don't toy with me like that! Can we get some confirmations? The fact that there's STILL no US release date is criminal. I will import this in a heartbeat, came so close to getting the Japanese set...

EDIT: Blu-Ray.com forum members are confirming it's region free... They've also found a video glitch and some labeling issues. Sigh.

Hello Beadelf,

Firstly it's not a duff product - we're looking into what the cause is now but in the worst case looking at that image we'd assume it's a video capture problem that is easily corrected on the next print run of the image.

We've checked the rest of the disc now and not found any other errors of that nature either we're pleased to say so it's an isolated case that will be fixed.

As soon as any future print run is done we will also print a run of discs on spindle to send out to anyone who is put out by this glitch.

Thanks to people for flagging it to me though and I hope a small bit of wriggle room can be given on our first release and the desire to correct it as soon as we can.

Very best regards,

Andrew Partridge,
President, Anime Limited

Yeah that's where I got it from. I saw the post about the glitch and heard about the labelling issue a few days ago. I think the first disc says it contains 6 instead of 7 episodes or something. It's minor stuff and if they send out a rectified copy I'm happy!

So is that glitch only during a single frame? If so, I could live with that. Also, the labeling issue is a nonissue to me.

Region-free is delicious.

Yup, the glitch is only a few frames at most. It's noticeable once you spot it (I must have turned my head away or something since I missed it the first time round) but it's really minor, the rest of the show looks gorgeous.

Yeah this is all it is.

Awesome, thanks. Well, not awesome, ahah. But I want HD Bebop so bad. This isn't too bad, but still unfortunate.

Gotta knock a little harder

best ending theme ever

opinions may vary

Always keepin' safe inside
Where no one ever had a chance
To penetrate or break in

Let me tell you some have tried
But I would slam the door so tight
That they could never get in

dem blues..

It is being rectified for the second batch at least, which is excellent.

Am I reading that wrong or will they be sending out a fixed disc for people who ask for one? I assume I'd pay for postage but that would be awesome!

Reading through that blu-ray forum thread, I can't believe someone wanted them to crop the 4:3 ratio on CB! So much detail would be lost in the backgrounds.

Yup they will! It's minor enough that I could live it, but I'm glad they're offering us a fixed disc too.

Agreed, I had to hold back on my reply in that thread! We still had people in the UK complaining about Ninja Scroll on BD being pillarboxed. It was bad enough when we had to put up with pan-and-scanned stuff on VHS.

Watched a bit more today, god I love this show.

Help me out here, folks, but was Pierrot Le Fou ever intended (either partially or fully) to be inspired by Batman: TAS? I can't be the only one who thinks that the character design seems to be influenced by Bruce Timm

Unfortunately I don't have my Multi-region player around to check it myself, but if they say it's region free than it probably is.

It is so obvious that she stole a lot of the soundtrack - Too Good Too Bad (brilliant moment and song) is absurdly similar to Herbie Hancock's Chameleon. She barely even tried to hide it. She may be a hack and it certainly is terrible to do, but at the end of the day the soundtrack is phenomenal.

There are so many great artists that basically ripped off some other artist that no one remembers or cares about. She's done so many great soundtracks at this point that it doesn't even matter anymore. The vocals of Maaya Sakamoto and others are new additions, even if the music isn't completely original.

I completely agree. Reading it back, I wasn't that clear. It is a shoddy practice but the end result works magnificently and for me, that is what matters.

Apparently it is. I say apparently because according to this thread it is but I can't confirm myself 100% but I have no reason to believe it isn't at this point!

I want to order it but seeing that they are planning to fix their problems with the next run of discs, I'm going to wait a little bit first before ordering.

Sounds like a decent plan if your importing. If your in the UK they might replace if for you.

so despite what I was told the other night, this will work on a us ps3?

Well we've recently discovered that it's region free now so I don't see why not! :D

Just watched the first episode of Cowboy Bebop in BD for what is my first run through of this series. Looks glorious and the episode itself was quality. I'm sure i'm in for an excellent ride!

it's one thing to use common chord progressions or musical vamps here and there. it's another to repeatedly take parts of songs (from multiple genres) and leave them almost completely unchanged and not give credit to the original artists.

the soundtracks are definitely great but perhaps we should be describing yoko as musical curator possessing great taste lulz.

I doubt they'll ship the corrected disc to the US, so I'll probably wait until the old stock is cleared. It's nice to know that it's a region free release though. I hope the same holds true for Bakemonogatari, even if my CFW PS3 could play it just fine anyway.

Fair enough.

Is there a list of which tracks are ripoffs? There are so many tracks of hers that if just a couple of them were all her, she'd still be a genius. Go to Rakuen from Wolf's Rain, for instance, or Voices from....what was that from again? Escaflowne? So many.

Edit: Voices is from Macross Plus apparently.

It's cost around $38 to buy on Amazon UK. When I bought the Harry Potter Bluray collection from Amazon UK it arrived pretty fast to the US (1 week).

You know what other problem they'll fix on the next run of discs? Region coding. Once Sunrise figures out these discs are region-free you better believe they're going to clamp down.

That is not unprecedented right? To do that in a second run? Because I can see that happening. Super surprised this slipped. I don't even know if it was intentional.

Now I'm debating on buying or waiting for an eventual US release if we ever get one. I think the only thing holding me back now is the fact that it doesn't include the dub. It's the only anime where I prefer the dub.

It does include both dub and sub :)
