I'm really torn about buying it or not. On the one hand, the demo runs like crap on high settings on my brand new computer and feels too much like Far Cry. On the other hand, I like the jungle. Damn.

This is annoying... COD4 feels too much like MOHAA, COD and COD2 yet I never see that comment made in a COD4 thread.

for me honestly...what keeps drawing me into this game is its overall good to great presentation of its story (a huuuge leap over Far Cry) and its fantastically awesome gameplay

...I stopped being impressed by the visuals early on, particulary the jungle as its goes for realism a bit too much (if that makes any sense)

I do love the art direction quite alot though...especially the design of the nanosuit

If you have even a passing interest in game modding, head over to www.crymod.com. The engine is extremely easy to mod even without the SDK (bullet time via the visual scripting system for example), built in animation system that spanks many of the (cheap) 3d packages, etc. I was building maps and creating scripted jet flyovers in days of installing the game and getting assets into the game is almost criminally easy using even the gimp tools adapted from Far Cry. And because there are no ranked servers there probably be a more active mapping community then COD4, BF2/2142 and similar games.

UnrealEd 4 has some serious competition :)

so I finished this tonight and I have to say....

...it really is an 8

Not really so much because of when the "other fellas" make their appearance...I actually enjoyed them alot and the build up to that was fucking fantastic

...what really brought it down was 3 things for me:

1. I'm sorry, but given what I saw....the game should just run better on alotta comps. I mean, it looks wonderful but I got desensitized to its "almost real" palette real quick and then soon after just became annoyed but its constant dipping into the teens during combat...or when everything just all of sudden halted for almost 10 secs because it was loading "something"

2. The last "boss" became very annoying, very quickly....I know its kinda shallow, but maybe you'll see what I mean when ya get there. Still a step up from "The Crater" in Far Cry though :lol

3. The ending....I mean really....cmon, it just feels like half a game and I don't get the impression Crytek is going to be jumping into the sequel immediately....I could be wrong though

The game is still a triumph though and easily one of the best FPS in years... I still have lots of love for Crytek and their efforts to continue pursuing this "sandbox FPS" sub-genre that I really do adore

Thank goodness. The Crater in Far Cry was one of the worst designed segments I've ever experienced in an FPS. I have no clue what they were thinking when they designed that garbage. A complete waste of time.

I enjoyed the prior bit where you are dropped into the jungle with virtually nothing, though. That was pretty fun (though the execution needed some work).

Trick to that was not to grab the rifle... it only had 10 rounds and actually slowed your run speed down! Didn't find out about that for agggggggges! :p

My PC is nearly complete. It'll be finished within a fortnight. I'll be running:

Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 3.0GHz 4MB Cache 1333MHz FSB
Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium
Motherboard: NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI Motherboard
Graphics Processor: 768MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTX ULTRA
Memory: High Performance 1066MHz DDR2 SDRAM - 4GB - 4 x 1024MB
Monitor: 22" Dell UltraSharp Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor

Now i'm aware that running Vista means i'll only have access to 3GB of RAM, but i'm hoping it'll be sufficient.

What kind of performance should i expect playing on max @ 1680x1050???

At that res? no playable on max, totally fine on high though.

For max detail you will need to drop down to 1280x720, then you're looking at an average rate of ~30.

He'll probably be ok. Im running 1280x720 with all settings on very high with a two year old X2 4800+ and an 8800GT. I get around 60 indoors, 30 outdoors, and 15-20 when stuff gets insane. Its entirely playable.

if you get the 64bit one, you can get access to the full 4GB ram.

I figured as much.

What would improve the performance? Save for buying a Intel Core 2 Extreme QX9650 and overclocking it to 4GHz???

It's the processor i'm waiting for and the other option would be an Intel Core 2 Quad Q6700 and overclocking it to 3GHz. Would it be worth the extra money???

Thats what I said, if he wants very high detail then go 1280x720 or if he wants native rez then use high/tweaked high.

The game is entirely GPU bound, you won't get a tangible boost from any other CPU.

Also unless you're getting a killer deal on that Ultra just get a GT for now, and if you're planning on paying retail get 2 instead.

Bah!

So i should have bought 2 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT's???

I guess i am ok with sacrificing the resolution to play on max :(

The game on very high settings with AA takes up roughly 945mb of video memory @ 1680 x1050. The next round of cards with 1GB ram should be able to handle crysis properly.

The indoor stuff looks completely uninspired and unimpressive.

Image how good it could look if they used the power needed for the outdoor view distances on indoor detail.

:lol :lol :lol

The indoor stuff in motion is where the game most often hits moments of video realism.

Anyone else suprised by how good the multiplayer is? I didn't expect to think too much of power struggle, but its seriously the most addictive mutliplayer game I've played since Supreme Commander, or as far as FPS's, since BF2. Very impressive.

And it runs well enough on my sad little 7600gt on medium at 1024x768. Still looks awesome and is entirely playable too. I love this game.

It's a fucking blast, I've been logging a couple hours into it every day, but I was in the mp beta so I was expecting it. Crytek wants it to become a serious competitive mp game with ever improving balance and content.

Little dissapointed with the way the game looked on my system.

2.2 ghz core 2 duo
7900gs OCed
2gb Ram

Everything ran fine on medium, I just thought it was kind of uninspiring.

What are some tweaks I can do to get this thing looking better

(getting a new graphics card not being an option :))

The multiplayer sounds awesome. I was thinking of getting the game when the next gen cards come out but I'm going to get it very soon. Will i get decent frames for multi if i turn everything to low?
I have an 7600 gts, amd 64 x2 dual core 3800+ 2.01 ghz, 2 gb of ram, and windows xp.

Protip for multy kids, if you're an aggressive cqc kinda guy, you best friend is the SMG+Lam.

I've been dominating with that shit.

Also, only play Power Struggle.

Wow, just finished the game, simply amazing.
I love the weapon custumization, cool stuff. The SCAR is my favorite weapon by far.
The end was
kinda dissapointing, once the aliens kick in the game gets a bit less fun to play. Like Far Cry :) The level inside the alien ship is just a pain, looks great but not so fun to play. The ending itself was pretty cool, I like the open ending :)

Overall the game is blast, one of my favorites this year! Really enjoyed it, worth the wait.

I would suggest to wait till you can play it on decent settings, I think playing it on low takes away alot of the overall experience

You'd definitely get good framerates on low. I'd recommend bumping objects, shadows, and shaders up to medium though. Your comp should be able to handle it fine and it'll look a lot better.

The game is a lot of fun regardless of what settings you play on and there is more than enough replay value that you'll want to play through it again whenever you upgrade just to check out how much more awesome it looks. The game is just flat out fun to play and there is a ton of variation in it.

Powerstrip is your friend if a game won't add it in manually use that add a custom resolution and it should recognize it.

powerstrip is not your friend when it dont support 88xx series nvidia cards..atleasts its worthless as far as advanced timmings

it baffles me why crytek did this stupid approach with resolution settings.. lol

I'm a newbie to PC gaming. Can someone tell me what I need to upgrade to play this with the most bang for the buck. I don't want to spend too much money, but I don't want to waste my money either upgrading stuff only to find a minimal increase. Here's what I've got:

Dell Dimension E510 running Windows Vista Home 32 bit
- Pentium D 2.66GHz (Dual Core)
- Radeon X1650 Pro 256GB ram
- 2GB Corsair Ram (not sure of the clock speed or type)

My computer is only about a year old. I know it has one PCI-E slot (16 teeth) and one smaller one. I assume the smaller one is for SLI? I would like to only replace the GPU, but I'm not sure if my CPU can handle this game. Currently it looks like crap. Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory looks better right now with the set-up I have. Anyway, I'm worried I might have to replace my power supply if I get a new GPU. I don't know how to figure out how much it can handle. If I have to replace the power supply, I will need to get it powerful enough to cover a CPU upgrade in the future. What do you recommend?

You need two PCIex16 slots for SLI, as you need to run two identical cards.

Your bestbet would probably be an 8800gt.

However...I'm not sure if that uses standard power supply types, or if it still uses the wacky proprietary ones that dell used to use. I THINK dell switched to normal PSU's during the P4 era, so you're probably okay, but I would make sure first, as if they didn't, when you hook up the new one you'll fry your mobo. Without some knowledge of what your PSU is it's tough to say if you'll need a new one now.

There should hopefully be a sticker on it listing the specs. Look for total wattage and how many amps on the 12v rail, if theres a sticker.

It says DC output = 305W. I don't know how much power I need. I have two hard drives and a factory (cheap) sound card.

The 8800GT requires a min. power unit of 450W. When buying a PSU you have to pay attention to the brand, if you buy a cheap power supply that outs 450W its almost certain that the 450W stated on the suppy is its max. output. it will not deliver 450W at a constant rate. Those powerunits are kinda unrealiable and can be unstable. When you buy a more expensive PSU you know you will get the power you need.

I just downloaded the demo and it plays in a window when launched, I clicked the full screen option then apply and it does go full screen... then hangs up. Nothing responds, music keeps playing though. Any idea how to fix this?

If I launch it again it goes to full screen immediately but hangs up at the message displayed.

Specs are Q6600, Vista 64, 4GB RAM, 8800GT.

It's not as if the rest of the game didn't take artistic liberties ; they could have done the same with the boat and the lighting/atmosphere of it.

Gray shadow isn't really an interesting thing to look at.

Please, the carrier level like the rest of the game is ridiculous to see in motion, no joke, when certain lighting conditions and object motion blur happen you experience moments of video realism.

Indeed. The Carrier was probably the most convincing part of the game.

The latest Nvidia ones, official and not beta (Edit: 169.02). I also updated to that vista hot fix the game installer prompts you to after it finishes installing. I'm going to reinstall it again and see what happens, gotta first d/l the file again as I deleted it. =\

Go into your video settings first and check to make sure your VSYNC setting is forced on/off and not Let The APP Decide.

Also the shortcut for alternating between windowed and full screen is ALT+Enter.

If it still doesn't solve it you can probably fix it just by adding a line to the autoexec file in notepad to run fullscreen. A

BTW it turns out that enabling ragdolls on bodies is very easy. Open up your GameData.pak\Scripts\Entities\actor\BasicActor.lua and then look for BasicActor.Server:OnUpdate and make it read:

Code:
local flags = {
		flags=
		geom_colltype_explosion +
		geom_colltype_ray +
		geom_colltype_foliage_proxy +
		geom_colltype_player
		};
