Dad, how was Call of Duty before? (Crowbcat)

Before both there was Delta Force.
Delta Force 2 was my first venture into the competitive gaming scene as once I retired from Baseball me and some guys started playing online tournies in a group named The Mafia

We won a fairly "large" tourney and our prize was a Delta Force 2 mug (that I still have somewhere)

Times sure have changed

So, we're comparing the multiplayer component from today against the Campaigns from prior entries for... reasons? Not sure I understand the point, frankly.

The tonal difference between BLOPS6's multiplayer and BLOPS6's campaign is pretty wide - because multiplayer, like zombies, has been its own thing for a long time. COD's multiplayer hasn't tried to be realistic since Modern Warfare 2 on the Xbox 360, where it was already morphing into an arena shooter with military trappings.

Played cod 1 2 3 on pc, MW1 and 2 on console. That was my fill of the series. Dipped back in with ghosts then ran back out. Played MW1 remaster. Early cods were the best cods. Then it went to shit.

At least that series turned to shit quickly with Black Hawk Down.

Everyone's forgotten that COD had a lot of haters, 15ish years ago it was called shit, everything that was wrong with "current" gaming.

So it's ironic to see the old entries grandfathered in as classics alongside DOOM etc when the narrative at the time was COD ruined FPS and people missed stuff like DOOM.

It's never been my cup of tea personally, but I'm fine with people consider the old ones classics now, I think everyone could agree the older ones are better than the newer ones.

Meh. It's not exactly sacrilegious to reskin a mp character in a videogame.. I say remove that stick up the arse, why so serious. Let people have fun and clown around a bit. There's always Arma if the drab and dry mil sim is more your thing (I for one like both types of games btw).
100% agree. Go play ARMA or Hell let loose or insurgency if you want realism. COD is about as realistic as NBA jam.

Unfortunately you can't say a bad thing about COD today without its supporters calling you names at the end of the day COD needs to return to COD4 era style, todays its menus are rapped with buy this, cosmetics, etc.

You're welcome:

Eh, dude is loosing his edge. The video would have felt more valid if at least he compared old multiplayer with new multiplayer instead of cherry picked current multiplayer with cherry picked old single player.

Though I do find the silly skins with completely out of place art styles in every other multiplayer game these days to be annoying

The OG or the Remake because the OG has nothing in common with modern COD.

It became more Michael bay like but it was still mostly "grounded" even if it wasn't just a straight war story.
I mean, COD campaigns have always been compared to a Michael Bay film even during the OG Modern Warfare trilogy era.
But yeah, MW 2019 tried to go back to a more grounded setting for both the campaign and multiplayer after the whole futuristic thing they were doing. Even during the first months of the integration with Warzone they were trying to stick to the setting as much as possible. The skin packs were people with military equipment, even the color bullets effects were based on real life tracer ammunitions.
I don't know what happened but some point after that they said fuck it and now we have a literal shark as a skin, you can shoot lighting bolts and you can have Kevin Durant and Homelander on your team.

Still cool that you won tho..

Did you play on PCs?

It is fascinating growing older and seeing the growth of the bitter old man shouting at clouds.

I always wondered how old men become entrenched in their ideas and now I finally see it.

We are old GAF, times change and we are no longer the target audience.

Let's not stop young people from having their fun.

Is this the "modern audience" devs are always chasing? Or is this just what younger genz kids are now. Into shit?

Last good cod for me was new mw, ww2, advance war, but my fav single player was cod2, world at war and original modern warfare 2 (2009)

There will always be people who complain about the present and romanticize the past.

It was the same in the Quake community, every new game was always worse than the previous one, which wasn't true most of the time of course.

Counter-Strike just went through the same exact thing .. CSGO will always be better than CS2 for a whole generation of gamers.

CoD is very unique since it has so many "flavors"and its released every year so you get people liking and disliking every single version of the game, ultimately though, if you take the whole frachise as a whole, it's probable one of the best multiplayer games ever created.

This video, and the subject matter it focuses on, is an 80% confirmation that Crowbcat is a current poster on GAF. Now I just have to find out which one of you is him.

This video was a bit sloppier than your previous efforts btw.

lol typical Disingenuous video by crowbcat. What a pathetic miserable lying sack of shit.

Uses mp footage from modern games to compare against single player campaign footage from ps3 era titles. At least be consistent, you can make your point about the skins without resorting to disingenuous comparisons.

I haven't played the last two campaigns but vanguard had some of the most visceral ww2 setpieces. Over the top as always but the campaigns don't have any of this other nonsense that's plaguing mp at the moment.

I preferred Soldier of Fortune at the time, but first competitive gaming clan etc was Unreal, then RF fiercely after that.

Then Vietcong… then BF1942 and after that point CoD has reigned supreme since.

I miss using Gamespyarcade.

I think I sunk like 1000 hours in COD1 and COD2 each. Played them both competitively too. Scrimming all the time and really enjoying that experience. Played MoH even before COD but COD was just the bees knees when it came out. Shame it was PC only. Still I think it managed to sell over 1 mil back then and that was pretty huge itself if I recall correctly.

The video has a point. I recall once when this series was meant to pay tribute to veterans of war and its horrific/historical consequences. Its become nothing, but a mockery of itself.

Tapped out of the series after Black ops. The writing was on the wall. It got clear that Kotick and his team morphed the series into bombastic Michael Bay movies. Modern CoD is kind of perverted in a way.

I remember fighting with the admin on the COD:UO server I played on back in the day because he modded in "Killing in the Name" over the normal victory music. I guess that clown won in the end.

COD3 wasn't on PC. And also it was a classic Treyarch piece of shit. They really didn't add anything to the franchise until BO2 if you ask me.

It's remarkable how unrecognizable the franchise is now. Personally, I liked Call of Duty 1 and 2, but Modern Warfare and whatever subsequent games I played parts of didn't really do it for me. I had fun with the mp from time to time. Those first couple of games were pretty excellent at the time, though.

Kinda reminds of how Far Cry 1 is a fucking world away from everything that came after it (except for Instincts, but... y'know).

Its sad what has become of COD and many other games, the worst oart about it though are the people that enable it by smashing down on score credits ect.
EFootball/PES is a good example, the reddit is filled with people moaning about it but check there other posts and there still smashing in money on the games store. Maybe its just what the majority want, just enjoy that we was there for the real peak of gaming.

They should just include an option where you can turn off all costumes for your opponents. I'm not sure how easy it is to implement but it's gonna be a win for both who like classic COD and those who enjoy the costumes.

I was playing it last night. Looked like 12 people were all playing different games on the same map. Knights, sharks, green glowing shit, fantasy, comedy and cartoon characters, none of them connected to or related to the combat theme of the game. Everything feels incongruous with no consistency or common theme. Just totally random and really takes you out of the game and it will only get worse as more shit is added/unlocked.

A pity because the game itself is decent. But I can't play something as visually tasteless and annoying as this.

Warzone is a totally different ballgame though. They have that version of COD down pact. So incredibly addicting. There are some lag issues I experience from time to time but the mechanics are amazing.

I don't really care about the cosmetic stuff. The game is free. Of course they are going to have that stuff in the game. As long as it isn't pay to win, I don't care.

Loved the first one, COD 1, i replayed it many times, the 2nd was more of the same, but still good and then COD 4 Modern Warfare was great also, other than those 3, i haven't liked any of the others as they were Muiltiplayer focused and i'm a SP gamer.

The World at War love is revisionist history. It was liked well enough but it was not universally praised by the community at launch. Bouncing betties, overpowered MP40, the stupid dog killstreak, the oversized tank maps, it was ultimately seen as just a CoD4 knockoff. Seeing it portrayed as a classic is very funny.

15 years ago the Call of Duty was Modern Warfare 2........a widely loved Call of Duty that only really had hate because One Man Army and the 1887.
Hell I remember I had a leaked copy of the game and got one of my X360s banned because I was top 20 in the world before the release date......and yeah the servers were full well before release.

2010 was BlackOps another widely loved Call of Duty

2013 was hated because Ghosts just wasnt that good.

Unreal Tournament 3 came out in 07 and it did some ~1 million units....COD would have considered that a failure.
Unreal Tournament R was literally free.
Dooms MP died faster than TitanFalls.

So the evidence has been out there for a while that classic Arena shooters werent the business.
COD staying at the top of the most played list basically year in year out proves that.

COD really only started getting hated around WWII or the changes that Modern Warfare'19 did to the MP.
Otherwise COD has pretty much always been a generally loved title, some of Sledgehammers games have been pretty weak, but if you really think about it Sledgehammer only started leading CODs with Advanced Warfare.

They alienated their old fanbase and conditioned the new one to accept horrid business practises like weapons hidden behind random supply drops.

If you grew up in a world where only Walmart brand cola existed, you wouldn't listen to the old man ranting about how they had Coca Cola back in his day. It's the same thing.

I've been playing BO6 on Game Pass, but 90% of that time has been in zombies.

The way I approach COD is the same way I approach sports games. I'll play one every 3 years or so and that's good enough for me.

I stop play COD since COD 5 world at war, stop playing it when they decide to go for more modern warfare, i have more interested in old warfare from wwii and before then any kind of modern warfare

Also i love old gen weapon like musket and reprater more than nowaday automatic weapon

Seriously, fuck the Fortnite effect on games. Not just in CoD, but all games. Not every game needs this shit. Developers are trying too hard to chase a weird trend that doesn't belong.

This video raises the question would some hardcore COD fans pay for a feature to turn off other skins and make them look more milsim?

The other crazy skins do not bother me as I play COD as an arcade shooter anyhow, if I want a more hardcore experience I play something else

2 more hours for the new zombies map to go live!

One more field perk
One more soda pop
One more bullet modifier

Can't wait!

The last game I played was Black Ops 2, and the last game I saw and footage of was Modern Warfare 3. Was the genuinely COD footage? I knew there were skins, but this is something else entirely.

Is this the Fortnite effect?

Holy shit,I had no idea COD in 2024 looked like that.I liked them when they were recreations of famous WWII campaigns, but then I'm boring, lol.

You're 100% correct. Kids with their parents credit cards tied to their accounts are now the primary MTX whales.

The nostalgia of having to grind for weapon skins is now a thing of the past when you can just buy them. I'm far too old to be competitive in these games anyway to have fun, my reflexes are just about capable of souls games, these twitch shooters I would have K/D ratio so bad it would be embarrassing. Battlefield is more my game but we all know what happened to 2042. At least COD is consistent in its delivery and can get a game out every year. It is quite literally a cultural phenomenon even though we make fun of it.

This is the majority of GAF including myself.

What happened? Did Fortnite influence the shooter industry?

I quit playing most shooters long ago and didn't know they were doing this stuff.

I'd correct that to 'what they like is worse than what you like'.

Call of Duty 4 was a commentary on the Iraq War and American imperialism whilst the war was still ongoing. They used to have balls and take risks, now they follow whatever the data tells them will generate the most revenue for a company (Xbox) which is supposedly prioritising the user experience over this shit, but nothing has changed.

I remember shortly after the Activision merger was closed, I saw a Cheech and Chong operator trailer. From then on I knew they weren't gonna change shit.
