Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc PC |OT| It's getting Steamy in here...

Tested the game out with max settings. Runs fine and super smooth. 60fps is great.

btw, how do i exit out to menu? i'm still in Prologue and i guess i can't do that yet? i forget. been a while.

I'm at work, so I have images turned off from the OP, but I've been wondering this for a long while. What type of game is this? Is it a visual novel? An adventure game? I guess the best question is: what are the gameplay options? Do you just read text and pick options or is it more than that?

I see a ton of praise for it, but I've tried a visual novel once and just got super sleepy and bored every time I tried to read through it.

So jealous of you PC folk playing this for the first time! You're in for quite the ride...

I'm so tempted to double dip after platinum-ing the Vita version last year, but I only just got my PC so I have plenty else that's new to play. Still I want to support the series, so if not now then down the line certainly.

basically 999 x Ace Attorney with a sprinkle of Persona 4

It is both a visual novel and an adventure style detective game. There will be long sections of reading text followed by a murder that you need to investigate. During the investigation you will examine points in the environment for clues. Once you have gathered all the clues you will move on to a trial of sorts where you need to prove who committed the crime. This involves some logic minigames where you point out contradictions or reach conclusions based on evidence (honestly: the minigames are kind of bad in both DR1 and DR2).

There is also a concept of "daily life" where you have free time and choose a character to hang out with and give a gift to (gifts come from a random gift machine that you spend "monokuma coins" you earn throughout the game when investigating points of interest). This raises a relationship level that will unlock further minor story content. This relationship-building game continues in the post-game so you can complete any relationships you may have missed due to... reasons.

It's a really fun visual novel/adventure hybrid with great characters and pacing.

Would you recommend this to someone who has never played/ever been interested in visual novel games?

On the flip side, I do love me some horror/mystery themes!

Danganronpa and Ace Attorney are far more game-y than pretty much every other VN.

VNs don't seem to hold my interest, but DR and AA are both great, so yeah.

There is (almost) no gameplay. You get to walk around the school and talk to people and then you get to click on flying words.

But, and I'm saying this as a guy that has been a gameplay purist for thirty plus years and hates anime, somehow this game is awesome.

Played for a few minutes. Looks like an excellent port. Supports all kinds of resolutions and antialiasing modes, works with keyboard and mouse as well as controllers, improved framerate, etc. This is how you do it.

I'm happy to support conversions like this. Here's hoping we get part 3 on PC.

One thing: I don't like the big A button icon that appears whenever you can advance to the next line. It's a little distracting.

For folks that want more Danganronpa after they completed the game, you should check out the DR X WWE mashups on YouTube. They are pretty damn funny but be advised, it has spoilers so finish the game first. Don't know if it has spoilers to Danganronpa 2 but I'm sure someone here would chime in about that.

Not sure if it's been brought up, but avoid Steam reviews. Some asshole named "funny aesthetics meme" spoils the entire game, along with a twist from Fallout 4.

Also, Danganronpa Abridged Thing, which is still being worked on (I think? wtf happened to Faulerro's youtube channel???). Very much spoilers.

Nah, he quit making videos all together after Higurashi. His channel got a claim on it, I think.

Also, gonna double dip for this as soon as I get the cash. Why is flying so expensive? Ok, I know why, but I'm gonna complain anyway.

wow, that's bullshit. I guess I'm late to the party for being pissed but I'm pissed!!

I think at this point the only advice is to forget the Internet exists when dealing with this franchise. Tumblr and the DR wiki are specially egregious, the amount of concentrated spoilers is impressive.

I don't think they have spoilers for anything beyond the first game, but YouTube in general is a big no no. Damn recommended videos.

Shit, I hope people know better than to click any spoilers in a DR thread till they're done.

Considering that the community thread has open spoilers for pretty much everything, maybe people interested in spoiler talk can use the original spoilers thread for the Vita release?

Hey, this still has the bonus mode from the Vita, right? The academy mode or whatever? That made me feel better after all the despair in the game.

Mukuro best girl.

Seeing everyone post about this really makes me want to double-dip and play this again right now rather than waiting... Since it's a good port, I just may to show my support for DR. It's great to see that it's #3 on the best selling chart right now.

OS X always seems to be ignored by Japanese studios. I'm not sure why. They ported this to iOS, so it wouldn't have been that hard to use that as the basis for a Mac version. Although it looks like they've pulled the iOS version from the App Store as well? I guess the only way for me to ever play Danganronpa is to pick up a PSTV.

Looking at the store page, it turns out this is compatible with Mac.

Oh we're talking about the best girl? C'mon people, we all know it's
Sakura
.

I'm not even joking.

I don't understand the love for this character. She's nearly my least favorite female character - It's close between Toko and her.

Edit: To be clear, the character design *really* throws me.

This game has a gamepad compatible launcher.

This game is already the PC game of the year and I didn't even start it yet.
Kidding, but devs really do need to get on that gamepad compatibility train for their launcher.

That amazed me

Why can't big devs do this too?

Jeez. That makes me want to buy it just to support the port even more.

Danganwrestling contains heavy spoilers for the first game, but no spoilers for Danganronpa 2 (though Episode 6 features cameos from Danganronpa 2 characters).

So once you complete Danganronpa 1, feel free to dive into the madness that I have created. :D

Do you by chance have any DPI scaling enabled? I just googled it and it seems to be a common problem across various programs.

Here's one I just took:

You can tell the 2D elements are upscaled, but the background is 3D and crisp. 60fps is nice.

Guess I'll wait till it's moddable. That low res text and UI is an eyesore for me and I'll fix it myself if I have to.

The majority of the Danganronpa fanbase is awful. Even the ones that aren't trolls like casually throwing spoilers around like everyone has played the game. All of us are serious when we tell you to avoid ANYTHING DR related if you're planning on playing this game.

hm

had a look in the wad file that the game runs from - some good stuff there. entire soundtrack in *.ogg format, visuals and graphics in *.tga files, all models and such as gmod files, audio samples/voices in *.wav and *.ogg formats, entire script in individual files...

basically, the game is fully moddable in every single sense from what I can see. I can't seem to work out how to properly unpack the *.wad file though, anyone got any ideas? as soon as that's possible, booooom

Right? I'm surprised that even super awesome devs that deliver stellar ports in every other aspect neglect this. Awesome impression right out of the bat. Abstraction Games are a great port company; they did the PS3/Vita port of Hotline Miami which was amazing, and they brought the improvements from these ports to the PC version. The game used to have performance issues, many bugs and even crashes. Abstraction Games came and fixed all that. They are awesome.

that program works fine with packing and repacking.

Guess it is time for me to do some modding.

Also did my part in getting Dang It Ron Paul but I'll only be able to play it next week since I crunch time at work for this weekend.

font is easily changeable, just giving it a go now.

edit: yeah that worked. just a standard tff font file (uses arial as default). doesn't change the scaling/smoothing though obv
