Danny Elfman on scoring Justice League, Return of His Theme and Williams' Superman

Hmmm... of all the issues with the DC movies, the music really hasn't been one of them. Man of Steel's music was fantastic, and BvS had some great music too. Wonder Woman's score was a little generic outside of the moments where they recycled her theme from BvS.

Even the Batman theme they used in BvS kind of reminded me a little bit of the Elfman/Shirley Walker theme at times. Like it could easily morph into that version of the theme if they wanted. The Williams Superman theme is great but the material Zimmer did in Man of Steel is really great too. If they could kind of blend the MoS theme into something more like Williams's theme for when Superman makes his inevitable return that would be pretty cool.

MCu's problem is that it doesn't retain it's themes across installments; the music themes each movie has is usually good to excellent.

I don't know about excellent. For me the only memorable piece of music they got is Silvestri's Avengers theme. IM1's theme isn't half-bad. But yes a big issue is that they don't keep these themes and build upon them. It's like Marvel doesn't really about the musical part of the equation.

Eh, Marvel hasn't had a great theme since Avengers with Antman being the only good theme since.

Heck the main part(best part) of the Avengers theme I don't even really think fits them and works better as a general SHIELD theme.

Sounds like it’s going to be very subtle.

I say fuck that up the ass. We’ve got a really iconic new wonder woman theme, pair that with the classic Superman and the classic Batman thing and go full on 100% with all three.

At the core thats what all the good hero themes are.
For example https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ws68JFY8qfI
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ge5HZuKd9Bc

can be used as simply as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0fHBHvd7Mo:)32)
heavily stylized https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QqRATvE-gXo
and as complex as https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-m0ehT3_mo

Zimmer makes good full tracks but his actual themes aren't the best,

Person of Interest is one of the best current examples of how it should be done https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kozXNBp4xbQ
recognizable short and sweet themes that hit quickly but can easily be expanded on based on the scene.

Some great superhero themes like Batman, Superman, The Rocketeer (random example I know), etc... are changed from track to track, and even turned some sub-themes are formed out of them. That's great use of variation in a score.

Zimmer's issue is that he's more of a rock star, so his film composing skills are limited. He can make great "pumping action tracks", but he's not the best at variation.

Not entirely, sure. But it would be pretty awesome fan service to drop the familiar fanfare when superman ressurects and comes to save them

Imagine the league getting beaten down, and you see dirt slowly rise as the opening notes of this start to blare:

It's an iconic part of superman. And while I would like them to stick with the Zimmer theme they also have this powerful tool at their disposal which they could use once in a while

I don't know. It's too tethered to the Christopher Reeve version, and all the good and bad that came from that version. And its usage was such an unearned gimmick that Bryan Singer used in Superman Returns. I thought he was much better than that.

I think Batman Begins established the precedent that composers didn't need to rely on nostalgia when arranging new works. Elfman's theme wouldn't have fit with Nolan's Batman as much as William's Superman wouldn't work with this.
