Dark Souls 3 Pre-Load on Steam is online

The Dark Souls 2 sales actually make a lot more sense compared to the first game however. Like I said in my edit too, I'm not really seeing a distinction between the PS3 or 360. I see PC, and I see console. The consoles sold more units overall. They just didn't sell more units on each platform individually.
I really don't see how this distinction makes sense.
It doesn't make sense from a financial perspective (individual console ports cost at least as much as a PC port), and it doesn't make sense from a gamer perspective (player base is split across consoles).

I wasn't really considering the whole "bigger community" aspect at all
I would argue that there is at least some correlation between overall online activity and sales, especially around launch.

It's because I was looking at it from a "if it's not PC, it's console" perspective. Not, "if it's not PC, it's PS3, 360, PS4, Xbone" for overall sales. Seriously, how do you think the numbers would actually change if there was no console option other than there being a PS3, and the 360 didn't exist at the time? Would things theoretically look any different compared to there being two console choices instead of one? Of course there are varying reasons why a person may have picked one system over the other if they could only have one, and potentially some people wouldn't have bought a console at all last gen, but that's not how I'm looking at it.

remember :)

I wish this was the cover.

The only time I'll have to play this next week is pretty much Monday night, so I'm thinking of cancelling my GMG preorder to grab it somewhere else to guarantee I have the thing downloaded by then. Maybe I'll hold off until tomorrow at least.

Why stop your cherry picking there? Along with all consoles being one and the same, and PC copies essentially being being given away, you should also only consider retail copies sold. Because everyone knows that a disc is real and digital sales are just imaginary. That should give you a comfortable 95%-5% split for your fucking platform warrior bullshit.

Yes they could potentially look very different. Have you paid attention to third party exclusives this gen? Bloodborne did well, but Street Fighter V and Rise of the Tomb Raider likely left sales on the table by going exclusive.

Given Bloodborne's performance and the longer term presence of From's RPGs on Sony platforms, perhaps the difference wouldn't have been big here, but don't pretend it isn't a factor to drop an entire platform for a release.

Unless the way I worded it was just too ambiguous, I was talking about if there wasn't any choice. Exclusives exist to serve each individual platform. There would be no money left on the table if the then divided PS3/360 user base was instead a singular PS3 user base, because the 360 console didn't even exist (which is what I was trying to say). I'm going off the assumption that someone that purchased a console would still have likely purchased a console (PS3) and not simply decided to go exclusively PC, or not game at all. I'm sure that could have changed sales slightly, but I don't see it being a drastic shift.

That should give you a comfortable 95%-5% split for your fucking platform warrior bullshit.

Again, enough of this shit. It seems like the only "console warrior" mentality going on is by those posting about it. Anyway, it looks like talking about this is pointless here anyway, and I'll just have to ignore posts from now on that keep making claims without any evidence.

Not to mention that it's not how many copies have been sold on Steam, but rather how many copies are registered on Steam. In the specific case of Dark Souls, the retail copies can optionally be registered on Steam. Still, it's all PC. The sales figures are also worthless

It basically uses collected playtime stats (and possibly public profiles as a supposedly representative sample) to estimate how many people actually own the game. These stats are massively skewed when there's a free weekend because the number of concurrent users shoots up beyond the actual number of users. It also doesn't show (even though it technically could estimate it) how many of the copies were bought during sale periods - Dark Souls has been on sale for €5/$5 several times.

This matters because no matter if 2 million copies of the game have been sold, it's all for nothing if the majority of them were sold during sale periods.

SteamSpy doesn't extrapolate sales data from player stats, just public profile game lists. This is why games don't appear on the website until after the section_type = ownersonly flag has been removed.

Edit: Also, the notion that Dark Souls PC would have been "all for nothing" if the lion's share of copies sold were purchased during a discount period is really quite absurd. Ports are relatively cheap as they're primarily if not entirely programming endeavours. KT doesn't continue releasing its catalogue of titles on to Steam -- and localising them for sale in other regions, in some cases -- despite virtually all said games having sales in the low thousands because it's feeling charitable, and the team Little Stone put together to port Valkyria Chronicles from the PS3, of all systems, to the PC was just four people.

I remember when I was in full panic mode, followed by a pig with iron horns, hollow soldiers and some hollow knights with zero estus flasks, ran for my life, go into a church. A lot of guys were following me. Yeah, a church, must be good, right ?

Fuck no, 3 knights and one fat knight. Run to the elevator. Go off the elevator. Find yourself back in the Firelink Shrine.

This is exactly when I started to love Dark Souls. The relief I felt in that moment is unmatched.

Wait a sec, PC version releases 6pm EDT? Fuck it, switching from PS4 to PC, hope my 2500k and 970 can get me to 60fps.

Also thanks to those who confirmed that gamesplanet.com is an authorized reseller, ended up getting the deluxe edition for $66.04 (5% steam group discount). Can't believe there's a place with better prices than GMG now. Love to see competition :)

Hope that first bonfire crash is fixed.

It's been around for years

So I know this is not the right place for this question, but my copy of DS3 for ps4 arrived today and it won't connect to servers, is that because the game isn't officially out yet?

lol. Given that i just reached that area a few days ago for the first time this story really makes me smile.

Can't wait to make my way through the rest of DS1 and then DS2. It's nice to know that this will be waiting for me when I catch up.

Anyone selling DS3 Steam keys at a discount? Think my i7-4790k / GTX 770 4GB / 16GB RAM will allow me to get 1080p/60fps with some settings turned down, hopefully.
